- Today I visited one of the oldest coffee shops (kopitiams) in Singapore, Killiney Kopitiam. Their history goes back to when it was first opened by an immigrant from Hainan, China in 1919. I loved the old-school vibe and their not-too-sweet kaya jam. The french loaf kaya toast was something new for me and oh man, it was extremely crunchy and nice. Personally I love visiting these traditional eateries where you can feel the culture and history. Please let me know your favorite kopitiam. I would love to visit more.

I was working part-time at comcentre which is opposite this kopitam 23 years ago before they branched out as chain stores. I remember a very sweet granny who manages the 'cashier' spot always ask me "小弟，你有吃飽嗎？不飽auntie拿多點給你". Such kind acts has also make me realize we should help others in times of need. Good memories!
4年前の長期出張の際、近くのDevonshireのアパートに6か月滞在し、休日の朝食でよく利用していました。懐かしいです、ありがとうございました。カヤトースト以外にもラクサなどの麺類も美味しかった。また、シンガポールに行きたいな～。

香港にもKillineyがNathan Road沿いのビルの半地下にあります。通っていた広東語教室に近く、夜の授業の前にさっとラクサを食べるのによく行っていました。コロナの影響で広東語クラスがオンライン化してから最近は行けていませんが、頑張ってほしいです。
確かsomerset駅からすぐでしたよね？嫁と行きましたが、大のお気に入りのお店です！フランスパンのトースト美味しそうですね🥖ジャムは当然買って帰りましたが、日本にも通販やってくれたら、毎週買います🍞

Yuan Yuang is also a popular drink in Hong Kong - brings back a lot of memory! This place looks like a legit local place where you can feel proper culture. Great video as always!

I love this place. They serve the best French toast with butter n kaya on the side . I love the coffee here , boiled eggs etc....Gee...i need to go soon.

３０年近く前の話ですが、街のいたるところにあったコピティアムのお店のおじさんは皆
パジャマの下みたいなステテコみたいなズボンを履いていたんですよ。コピはグリーンの小花がプリントされた小さめのカップアンドソーサーがきまりでした。ジブおじの老舗シリーズ大好きです。下町情緒とかコロニアルな雰囲気とかレトロ感漂うとか、そしてローカルに愛されている そんなところをいっぱい紹介してください！！！

The kaya toast look very traditional , those version I had when I was a kid. YinYan coffee originated from Hong Kong, or rather I first tried it when I was in Kowloon eating house many many years ago.

キリニーがオンラインショップ始めたの知りませんでした。お店の方々とても親切ですね。歩いていたかもしれませんが、キリニーroadの一本ワキのOxley roadにはリークアンユーの邸宅がありますよ。なので周辺は高いビルが建てられていないと聞きました。

I used to work nearby, and one day I decided to have a chat with the old proprietress, she mentioned her very 1st coffee "headman" 頭手 (not sure how to translate into English), he's the gentleman in the photo at time index 6:01, proudly showing his photos, and that when he was old and wanted to retire and die in Hainan, they bought him a house so he can enjoy a good retirement in Hainan.
Btw, I'm Hainanese, so I was speaking to her in Hainanese, perhaps that's why she was so open and sharing...

You should have spread the butter on the french toast then the kaya. There is a Hainan coffee stall in Amoy food ctr that sell the same food. 😋
コーヒー＋紅茶の「ユンヨン」は香港でもオーソドックスな飲み物です。
Ghibsan you can try the steamed version of kaya butter toast. Its was a normal offering long ago, but now very few kopi joints offer it.

My late grandfather used to live in one of those condos.
The light soy sauce is the way to go Ghib-San 😊👍🏻 and plus pepper to lift the taste of the eggs too. But this is the first time I see the kaya butter bread dunked into the egg and eaten concurrently...plain bread, certainly; but with kaya... 😅 I can't imagine how the sweet and savoury mashes together 😂😂
you need to try to eat kaya toast and half-boiled egg with condensed milk, it is so good.

ヤクンのスチームカヤ、オシャレなトーストボックスなどなどライバルも多いので、フランスパンとかでそれぞれ特徴のあるものを出してるのかもしれないですね。

シンガポールでは「ユン・ヨン」の古い名前は「kopi-teh」ですね。「ユン・ヨン」は香港からの名前よね。次は「コピ・グーユー」(kopi + butter) チェックしてみてぜひ。

Putting soya sauce into the soft boil egg is actually the Malaysian way. For the past 40+ years was taught to eat with dark soya sauce+pepper..whipped it..slurp down..is the right way!!😋😅

Yes more dimension. Light soya is salty and umami only but dark soya have a burnt, slightly sweet, salty, umami taste.
in my family, we take it with light soy sauce.
Totally agree... nicer with dark sauce and with added pepper. I never like to dunk the sandwich to the eggs though.
If u want to see really BIG fancy houses, go jervois road that area.
Would like to recommend heap seng leong as an even more old-school/traditional coffee shop to try! You can get the coffee with butter there. Alternatively, another place you can try coffee with butter is YY Kafei Dian, but I think the atmosphere at heap seng leong is more 'authentically traditional'.

You can use Google Translate to practice saying Yuan Yang in Japanese first, then change your accent eventually. It can help. But, great video nonetheless.
