Excellent 'no holds barred' interview. The 'Doc' despite his advancing years is sharp and witty as ever.
Whether you love him or hate him, he was a character from an football era full of them! i am a fan of any person with such honesty about himself, I am sure he did took some unpopular decisions as a manager, but hey, that is what he is paid to do....to manager the club, you are not going to be popular with everyone eh.
Sadly missed from the game today and not enough has been said of him nowadays, unlike others from the same era, but always made me smile....which was not far away when he had something to say!
Here's to the Doc, I only wish there was more characters like him in the game today.....it has become all too serious through big business, those players mentioned in this interview really cared for the club they were playing for, unlike the majority today, who are after the money first and last and their loyalty goes only as far as which club is going to pay them the most money in return for their so called services.

@@tommytaylor5195 Hi Tommy, Quite agree with you sir. The Doc was Momentous and what you saw is what you got. Very honest and a good plain speaker too just like Brian Clough. Today's young managers are Dim Wits and state the obvious , our current England manager is all anyilses and still doesn't know his best 11, should of known this 2 years ago n selects a team by name and this team rotation does my head in. No contienuity or plan of action. Going back to the Doc in my view he was very underrated and in 74 should of been England manager and may be spared the embrassment of Not qualifying for 2 World Cups which still bugs me to this day ' the manager takes the rap for me but the England side from 73 till 77 were Apathetic n no vision. Are you from Scotland Tommy. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK and Aston Villa fan since 1968🤝

@@glynnevans1851 Nice one Glynn,I echo your words on The Doc!!,I'm from Torquay, and I'm an Arsenal fan (please don't hold that against me), I remember growing up as a lad in the mid 80"s The Doc had a spell at Wolves, but it was when they nearly went bust, stadium wasn't great in those days, other than the main stand, and he had to play players who weren't up to it, kids, and o es past their prime, but he always was upbeat and later he was always on TalkSport when it use to be good,he was so funny, straight to the point, honest, but he knew his stuff,I'll be honest,I'm 46,47 later this year,do s lot of his career was before my time, but I can respect his achievements and the stories he told, just brilliant 👍,and by the way Glynn-SPOT ON about the current England manager, today's current climate of managers and the nonsense they speak, well said.

@@tommytaylor5195 Cheers for your reply Tommy, remember The Doc on Talk Sport before he sadly passed away' Fab but since Alan Brazil as gone part time to Thursday and Friday the programme as lost its way Monday/Wednesday? n boring too. Your Arsenal side were Momentous in the early 70s going back to Frank McClintock George Graham Charlie George and Bob Wilson ' the list is endless sir. That particular side played proper carpet football and never complained of tiredness or the state of the pitch unlike today's Mamby Pamby and prima donnas. Would put Ray Parlour in that early 70s group too. Have Torquay got back in the football league from the complicated play offs.Always in the old 4th Division when I was a lad Tommy. Don't agree with the play offs 'if you finish 3rd or 4th etc you should get promoted on merit. At one time it was 2 up 2 down. Best players I ever saw up front was Utds Best Law Charlton era were Momentous and Dennis Law was called the King. Sorry to see your team is lost in its own little world? You have some good players but they seem to lack confidence and vision but this coming season might see a dramatic change. My team is very overrated and it is more luck than skill as to were we are ' must admit I'm more hope full than confident. Recon Leicester could be a dark horse this season. Ace chatting with you sir .Kind regards Glynn 👍

@@glynnevans1851 Top man Glynn,I'm up early with s brew,I enjoy the piece and quiet before my kids get up,lol, Torquay United Vs Hartlepool play off final is today!,was so hard to get a ticket, think both clubs only allocated 3500 each, played at Ashton Gate this p.m. why only that number is daft,I know with covid these days it's all changed, but I just think that figure is to low .as for Arsenal,I honestly could talk all day about the past, current and future,I won't go on Glynn, but for years, and I probably mean at least 10+ or more,we've shot ourselves in the foot with not being able to defend crosses, playing to higher line, being so naive at times, and throw in the mix our daft ability to go and get a red card or give away a pen!!,I'll always love Arsenal, but how my Mrs has put up with me over the years-due to Arsenal's inconsistencies, god only knows!!.I believe football goes in cycles,we will be back, one day, probably take a while,I'm a realist, but we'll get there, and I do rate Arteta,I don't think for a minute he wants to play some players, but currently that's what he has to do.From the outside looking in,Villa-what a season!,played some super stuff,we should never of sold our/your keeper!,but happy for him,I read about Dean Smith, seems such s good bloke, was an article about his father, very sad read, and puts everything into context doesn't it.I hate saying these words,I fear Man Utd next season, it'll be interesting, just hope it can get back to normal, and not this new normal,I want the old normal back!. Anyhow, take care Glynn👍👍,ps...top words on Rat Parlour, brilliant bloke, was very under-rated,he could run all day, chip in with a few,and get stuck in,not heard him on TS for a while, but a funny bloke aswell!!,take care.

How can we ever forget standing on the stretford end in the seventies watching united under docs red army, i would not swap those times for anything on earth, halcyon days in my memory for eternal life. The fans adored him as we watched football on another planet compared to the dross of today, they were thrilling to watch and the atmosphere was something we will never ever forget.

Unfortunately the Stretford End fans rioted everywhere in the 70s, destroying the grounds. They caused the fencing in grounds & led to the Hillsborough horror. I hope you behaved yourself & why they, mainly early teens to under 20yr olds did this? They tried to get matches replayed by doing this to avoid relegation but it didn't work. It was the best thing going down for them to rise like the Phoenix reborn.

What a fantastic interview. This man is a legend. End of. He came to united at a very difficult period for the club, not unlike the situation now. He had the long shadow of Sir Matt over him, like David Moyes did last season with Sir Alex. He fixed that by asking the board at a meeting one night'Why is Sir Matts office bigger than mine. I am the manager'. He said at the time that it broke the spell. They swopped offices.he had united on the right track with young exciting fearless players. Coppell and Hill on the wings, Pearson and Greenhoff in the middle and a 4-2-4 in your face that terrorized teams. It never came to fruition as when he got the sack, sexton was installed and it went back to the dour, methodical, predictable, lethargic system English coaches used at that time. He was famous for legendary quotes, the best being 'after Man United, it's all downhill'! Thanks for posting this.

Kirk Brookes Usually there are three sides to every story. In this case, Denis's side, Tommy side and the truth. The holy trinity of Charlton, Law and Best were Manchester United back then. Bobby was the only one who left with any dignity. The 68 side had to be broken up. When the Doc finally did it, it took a year in the second division and putting young talented players in the side to bring them back. Fergie had the same ruthless streak. Whiteside, McGrath, Hughes, Sharpe, Ince to name just a few. Each player might have had a year or two left in the tank, but you are better off breaking in a younger player earlier than having to do it when it is your only option.

    • @scherben8870
      @scherben8870 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The Lawman's side would never have been heard if the Doc hadn't decided to sue Willie Morgan. He remained (publicly) silent till called to giver evidence in 1978. This led to the Doc admitting he'd treated Denis "wrong" under the cross examination that led to the trial's collapse. However, in the interests of fairness, David Meek stated in the 'Manchester United Football Book No. 15' that whole saga wasn't a result of "villainy" by the Doc

The Doc... in a early interview a reporter said your team doesn’t defend very well and Doc replied “how would you know you’ve only seen us attacking!” The night after we secured promotion back to the first division the Stratford end was electric everybody wanted to stay behind and just keep singing. What an atmosphere he brought to United and Manchester. Cheers Doc!

I think he lasted less than a year and managed 1 or 2 wins, but we probably gave him plenty material for his after dinner speeches. I was there on that cold December day when he took over at United. Full house, Leeds at home, and the Stretford End singing 'we want to see the Doc.' He walked out onto the pitch and waved up at us and that was it. The bond was sealed. We'd taken a 0-5 hammering at Palace the week before but we took Leeds by storm. MacDougall put us ahead but Clarke scored the equalizer with a few minutes left. Highlight of the game was a lad who ran on the pitch, took the ball off Lorimer and had a shot at goal. Her got carted off by the coppers and given a roughing up. I'd love to see footage of that.

As a pundit on Piccadilly Radio he used to give United serious grief (it was not constructive criticism) and takes money from any media outlet to slag United off. He then whines about United not giving him free tickets. You sew what you reap Doc

That team he had to build after the Busby era of Best Charlton Law et al had a great future but because he couldnt keep his snake zipped up out he went & Dave Sexton came in & destroyed that team which sent Utd back five years. If Ron Atkinson had took over after Docherty exit it might have been a different story.

great memories from Doc's red army. Entertaining, risk taking football. Never quite strong enough to survive a season at the top on the muddy pictures which lasted all winter. Great mistake to sack him and rather pathetic

Scots have made great players and managers over the years. In the 1970s Scotland were far superior than England. Take Alex ferguson from Man Utd and see how shite they are now.

One slight inaccuracy - he didn't start at Derby at the beginning of the 1977-78 season. Colin Murphy was manager for the first (I think) 5 matches.

    Great manager and football philosophy...
But not the best man manager....was his downfall...went behind backs and called many names? But Mary was lovely and I can't call him for that, just his way of going about things...shame for the club, but glad he is ok and still witty as ever
Thanks for those memories Thomas Henderson Docherty

Much maligned figure at Manchester United, but only by the hierarchy there at the time headed by Matt Busby and his favourites. The fans saw what Doc was doing and the seasons 75-76 and 76-77 a real team was forming. They should have paid off Lawrie Brown to go elsewhere. Football matters more than a wronged husband at Man Utd.

RIP Tommy Docherty. You left us with the ultimate question still un-answered :- "What would your Man United team have gone on to achieve if you had not been sacked in 1977" ???
We will never know the answer, but it will always be interesting to speculate........
