Hey Tony, just to say that I successfully fitted my X-Pipe this afternoon. I bought it from Triumph dealer and bizarrely it came without any instructions. Basically, without following your video it would of been so much more difficult to install. Thanks for the time you spent making the video (and all your videos!) as I followed it step by step and it was spot on. Loving the X-Pipe by the way! Keep up the good work :)
Just had one fitted at my Triumph Dealership in Cheltenham. It's a pig of a job on the Thruxton R but their immediate response was that the XPipe is very well made and sounds awesome. I already have the American spec exhaust fitted. Add the DeCat and it sounds fantastic. Keep the vids coming Tony! Cheers!
Good job Tony! I've already ordered front chock, rear spools and pitbul stand just to do this! Just waiting for the pipe to arrive! Thanks so much for your tutorials ~ 👍
Yet another excellent video. And I'm only watching it now (cause I know it's been out for awhile now) is because I'm finally getting around to the x-pipe. That is, of course, once I'm done with the fender elimination kit. Thanks Tony!
Thank you for posting this video, and all of these videos! I just installed the British Customs 2-1 Low Pipes GP Edition which didn't come with any instructions. This video made it possible!
I just leaned the bike's right side up against the garage wall. I removed everything else first to the point where the only thing stopping me from taking the cat out was the frame rail. Then leaned it against the wall, loosened rail, pulled cat, and tightened the rail back up so I could set it back on the sidestand to finish up putting it back together. Not the safest option of course. I wasn't worried if the bike had tipped over, but if you are not confident that you have the strength to hold the bike up then probably not a good idea. Certainly the quickest and easiest way though, if you dont have a paddock stand, etc.
Many thanks from France ! Merci encore "Man Cave Moto" you're great !!!
Merci pour vos gentils commentaires et je suis heureux que vous ayez trouvé mes vidéos utiles. J'ai appris au fur et à mesure et je voulais juste partager mes expériences avec d'autres propriétaires de Triumph. Roulez prudemment mon ami
The video was great ,the best part was telling all the nuts and a bolt sizes especially the nut on the top frame 14 mm ,Made it really easy !!! Did not have to remove the tank but I do know now how to remove the tank !!
The stock rear sprocket is 41T, I've seen a few people go for a 44t rear sprocket to shorten the gearing a little and add a little more to the acceleration. A 39T will give a higher top speed, but will slow the accelaration down a little. Not a massive difference admittedly. Depends what you are trying to achieve
Apologies if i've caused any confusion. The two tubes on the X-pipe do merge to form a balance pipe as they would do in the stock cat. It didn't occur to me at the time that people would assume they were just two individual tubes. It seemed obvious to me (its called the x-pipe) if you look the diameter of the tubes where they meet (they are not full width). But on second viewing now its been pointed out, i may have given the wrong impression.
It’s quicker and easier (plus a little less risk) to take the tank off. Access to those top bolts is much better. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove the tank
Very comprehensive video thoroughly explained . However the bike would appear to be a tad over engineered by triumph to comply with new Euro emissions regs. But that's the result of progress I suspect . They are great bikes I was impressed when I test rode one . I'm glad mines a 865 carbed no worries no electronics rejet and straight through exhaust sound sweet .
+andy blackburn Indeed that's the future for modifying new bikes going forward. It'll be harder and harder. It's frightening how much stuff they've packed into the frame. Regardless of whether you like the new Bobber or not, the impressive bit is how they've packed the same stuff all in without being able to hide it under the seat!
Maybe a dumb question, but on the Euro 5 models with the rear mid pipes welded to the cat, will this process still work? I'm hoping to use my center stand, but not sure if only listening one side will work, and also not sure if having to loosen both frame rails will be a problem on center stand. Otherwise I will have to pay somebody to do it. Appreciate this helpful video.
There is an option which is the same prcess as this, but you replace to mid pipe too.....www.freespiritsparts.com/en/product/xl-pipe-de-cat-for-triumph-street-twin-euro-5/
@@mancavemoto yeah, I have that one. Just not sure if both frame rails have to be removed. I much prefer video instructions over the written ones in multiple language, as they are a bit tricky to follow. And since the mids are welded on the cat, not sure how easy he's going to be to get it out with only one frame rail off.
Very in depth video! I have seen another video which had straight through manifold pipes right into the Vance and Hines slip-ons. The Thruxton in the video did not have the catalytic converter - nor an X pipe. Do you know where to acquire the straight headers that I can fit to the Vance and Hines slip-ons for my '16 Thruxton R?
Hi Don, I haven't seen straight through headers anywhere so far. Down & Out cafe racers fitted some to a T120 which I believe that had made, might be worth contacting them? I have read there is a drop of in torque if there is no 'balance' pipe, but I don't know how true that is. Cheers Tony
Hello dear Tony... First of all thank you a thousand time for all your good stuff on youtube, I praise each and every day that good fellows are giving their precious time for free to help us ! I have a new black/silver Triumph Street Cup for a couple of weeks now and I consider also installing this X-pipe decat part. I looked at the downloadable user manual on the Free Spirits website but I can't figure out WHY we have to take out the fuel tank completely ? Is that only to be able to disconnect the left leg of the frame and reinstall it easily because we have to put some large wrench or because there's a risk to damage the fuel tank. Thanks for you answer Tony and of course ton up with the tough guys around ! ;-) Regards from Belgium. Eric.
+MrToonfish Cheers Eric, thanks for your kind words. It's not necessarily essential to remove the tank, I've heard of people who haven't......but, it does make accessing the top frame bolt much much easier. It also gives a bit more room to work, and saves any risk of damaging the tank. Removing the tank is much easier than you would first imagine. I'm no mechanical expert, so I do trust the guys at Freespirits. They don't usually add any unnecessary steps. Taking shortcuts usually ends in tears in some form or another!
Thanks dear Tony, yes I think the same... I have no special problem dropping the fuel tank, but I was just wondering if it was necessary for example to avoid damaging some electrical wires etc. It's logical to put the tank apart, so you can't damage it while working on the bike and as you said, give an extra access to the upper bolt on the left frame leg. So Tony, you're not mechanical expert ? You must be kidding, I really appreciate the way you're doing and explaining things on your channel, everything seems to be so easy and I really learned a lot about how to work on a motorbike. Thanks again ! Cheers.
Thanks for yet another great video Tony. The bike sounds awesome. I´m still waiting for my Street Twin to arrive, but I´m already looking up some possible mods for the bike and this one is one of the possibilities. Still, since we have obligatory inspections starting this year in Portugal (I don´t know how it is in the UK) I do believe it would be a pain in the behind having to undo all the work to put the catalytic converter on the bike every year, so it passes the inspection. Some good sounding slip on exhausts are also a possibility. Either way, it is still on consideration. Two questions though: Where ca we get the Triumph manual (so to know the torque settings for each screw); Can we get a torque tool on any hardware store or are they special made somehow? Thanks for any ideas regarding my doubts.
Thanks Ricardo. I got the torque settings from the instructions that Freespirits provide. Any standard Torque wrench will be good, just make sure its in range, some will go to settings that are not required on a motorcycle. Will the inspections include emissions? The US spec slip ons I have are good, and you can always put the baffles back in for the inspection.
I do believe the inspections around here will include emissions. I guess it will be better If I just go with slip ons. I´ll look into it in depth. The US spec Vance & Hines have to be ordered from the States? Once again, thanks for the help and quick response Tony.
Awesome Video Tony, I just used it to install an xpipe on my street twin over Christmas and it was invaluable so thank you! So far running with stock pipes and no remap and it sounds and runs excellently with lots more character. There is a slight rattle / whistle under hard load and run off from the stock silencers which I'd like to get rid of though. Do you get this with your US spec V&H's?
Patrick Charlton Hi Patrick, glad the video was of assistance. I can't say I've noticed any of the noises you have described. Might be worth going over all the bolts again as a double check.
Thanks for the tip! I'm guessing it's the stock cans baffle rasping a little with the increased air flow. Hoping new cans and a remap will sort it. Can I ask where did you get your retune done?
Views from the Man Cave which makes the biggest difference. Thought of putting your bike on a dyno be interesting to see what difference it has made. Also any plans to change air filters?
+theglynux The change in sound is most of it, just changing the slip ins will have a very minimal effect on power in my opinion. No plans on messing with the inlet side, that's when things get more complicated re maps and AF ratios
DAMN CRAZY THING THIS TH-cam>> THIS IS WELL DONE PERFECT ON THANKSGIVING NIGHT STUFFED TO THE GULLET WITH FOOD I CAN BARELY SIT PANTS UNDONE & JUST CHOMPING AT THE BIT TO DO THIS TOMORROW ON THE TRX R!
HOLY SHIT WILL MY DEALER SELL & FIT? SHOULD I TELL THE MECH TO WATCH YOUR VID SO HE SEES THE DIFFERENCE OF INSTALL? NOW I'M REALLY EXCITED CAUSE I GOT OTHER EASIER FITTINGS TO DO! I JUST WANT HIM TO DO IT RIGHT
ALERT! If you have the Thruxton R, things are a bit different. First of all, the headers are connected, which means you won't be able to simply take off the clips or put them back on. At around the 7 min mark in the video, per the demonstration of loosing the frame, you want to leave it loose to put the headers back together. If you don't, you won't be able to fit them back together. I ran into trouble after following the video and tightening the frame and not being able to maneuver the headers back in place. Also when you install put the x-pipe in place make sure the two bolts used to hold it in place are in fact turning into the nut, one of mine I thought was in but wasn't and didn't realize until it was too late and can't seem to get it to tighten. everything seems solid but I'd feel better if I'd gotten that done right. All in all, I'm enjoying the throatier sound. Can't speak yet to power increase as I just took a quick spin around the block and it was late.
Hi Don, the website is www.freespiritsparts.com/en/ but they now only sell through dealers. You can find your nearest dealer on the site here www.freespiritsparts.com/en/contact-us/
filmdetective haha, no not a mechanic just showing that a lot of this stuff is not beyond the capabilities of anyone. It's only a machine, just like a bit Lego kit! Nothing to be scared of.
Hi, Amazing mod and the sound is definitely more aggressive and throaty. My question is, by fitting the X-Pipe only after decat with stock exhaust, will it stress the engine pistons more in the long term? Will it be in the safer limit by not causing any significant extra wear and tear? Cheers!
+Kingline07 A new map for the ECU to adjust for the different pipes. Not essential, but it helps if you choose the v&h US spec slip ons or hi level pipes
Hi Tony. Great video and thx for yours experience. Did you use K&N filter and If not can you wrote why? Coz i didnt find in yours videos that you change Air filter.
Hi Robert, no I didn't change the air filter, I kept the stock one in place for a number of reasons. I wasn't really concerned about performance, the x-pipe saved weight, but more importantly to me made it sound so much better. I had the bike remapped for the V&H us spec hi level pipe (ie no cat) but changing the intake side would put this under more 'strain' so I wasn't worried about doing it.
Views from the Man Cave what are u thinking about wrap exhaust header pipe? I love that design look but i worry about the demage under the wrap(rust) . Thx for sharing XP.
Tony, I’m curious where you sourced torque specs for the frame cradle bolts...Haynes puts top and rear at 40 Nm and middle at 105 Nm rather than 45 and 80, respectively (though I’ve seen 45 and 80 in several videos)...
thank you so much for doing this!! i was holding off because i kept hearing it was such a pain but this would cut that at least in half. any reason i couldn't do it with just a rear stand? thanks again Sir.
Hi Tony, I've just put on the Xpipe today. 2,5 hours of work...very quick!! Thanks a lot for your very clear explainations on your video. My bike sounds much better.
I will never do this even though the bike sounds fantastic! Way too cumbersome. Especially with the workspace I have! Not sure I will pass the emission test either in my inspection in a couple of years time. But a fantastic video nevertheless! Short but yet comprehensive. Tnxs Tony!
Alexander Julin yep, it's not for everyone and you have to weigh up the benefits over the work involved. I'm just here to show you how it can be done. Thanks for your comment. Ride safe Tony
Jo Stroobants Hi, I've no plans too. I'm not keen on the look of it to be honest and once you start messing with the inlet end then AF ratios etc become a worry. To me anyway
The problem with mods to the intake and exhaust systems on modern ECU controlled motorcycles is that the engine will not be in proper tune without re-mapping. Worse still is that manufacturers are making it difficult to access the ECU for proper dyno tuning. With a less restrictive exhaust would not the engine be running leaner and hotter? (motorcycles don't have a Mass Air-flow Sensor like the cars do). The stock engines are already tuned as lean as possible in order to meet emissions requirements. I installed a full Arrow 3-1 system (no cat) in my 2010 STR but it also has the OEM Triumph-approved mapping to go with it and the fueling is flawless along with a 5 hp increase. Maybe a Power Commander will be available soon for the Bonnevilles?
Hey, just FYI, these have self learning ECU's...Drive it a bit and it will remap. They have o2 sensors that will keep the bike from running dangerously lean
Hi Tony, Do you think it would be very noisy if I put on a V&H US spec with no baffle associated to my X-pipe which is already on my bike? Maybe I can just get a V&H Euro. Will it make a nice difference compared to the stock exhaust sound? What do you have? Thanks for your help. Cheers. Thomas From Annecy in France
Hi Thomas, Ah I love Annecy, we stayed in La Clusaz a few summers ago and drove down to spend a day swimming in the lake over at Talloires. In answer to your question I was already running the US spec Vance & Hines without the baffle. So the sound you hear is the setup you would have......and it sounds awesome!
@@mancavemoto Hi Tony, Thanks for your answer and thanks so much for all your videos. Your bike sounds awesome, you're right. Good to hear that you like my mountains and the lake.
Hi Tony. Some people have made comments about the legallity of taking out the cat. From what I can tell, it may fail it's first MOT if it's emmisions are too high, but mine is a 2018 model so it's first MOT is two years away. I assume you've got to tell your insurance company if you do this mod, same as any other modification you make? Otherwise, your insurace might be void?
Hi Mikey, yes I never tackle the subject of legality and I’m only showing how to fit the xpipe not recommending it be done. However at the moment there is no emission test for bike mots and this is not scheduled to change anytime soon. So the minor change a decat makes to emission readings is not relevant for bikes. Yes it’s very prudent to tell your insurance company about any mod. Most decent bike insurers have a number of what can be viewed as standard mods included in the policy which do not need to be recorded ie tail tidies, end cans etc but you’ll need to check with them on the specifics. It’s worth paying any extra premium rather than risking a zero payment in the event of a crash or theft.
@@mancavemoto thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I've already got the TEC cans on mine, so the decat might be necessary to get the best from them. I'm just not sure if I can justify the £100 or so right now... something to think about in the summer maybe, when I upgrade the cam.
Question: Having the exhaust make a sharp 90 degree turn, then a horseshoe-shaped "U" turn, and then another sharp 90 degree turn adds a lot of resistance, and causes the exhaust to slow down. If you added a piece of straight pipe between the header and tail pipe, wouldn't it increase the flow and increase the amount of scavenging, thereby adding even more performance, if it could be anchored to the frame for added strength?
Hello, i have purchased the x pipe two days ago from the dealer and he is telling me that i need to install a pc5 and get the bike remapped as well after fixing the pipes. I have checked with other users and most say there is no need to as the 2019 model, the ECU will tune itself and there is no need for any pc5 and mapping. Is that true? Apparently all i need to do is make sure the fan comes on before i start moving after starting the bike. Can you advice if it is really necessary to remap? The cost for pc5 and mapping is triple the price of the pipes itself. Thank you.
If you haven't changed the input side (ie filter, snorkel removal etc) then the x-pipe makes a marginal difference. The ECU has a tolerance and can deal with a certin range in terms of mapping. It can accomodate the change in flow with this installation. If you start to change other components then it might be a different story. Triumph did have a map specifically for the US spec pipes (with removable baffles) which was referred to as an 'Off Road map'. I had this flashed onto my Street Twin at a dealers and it did make a difference (I was running the x-pipe and the V&H pipes with no baffle). In short, you can run the bike fine with no power commander.
Hi, A tricky question to answer. I originally fitted the v&h slip ons with the cat in place and it did make an immediate improvement in the sound. Performance not so much. When i fitted the x-pipe there was a noticable 'pep' in the throttle response and the bike felt more lively. If was going to choose between the two
Well, the tongues are waggin on the forums and you know what? They're right! Excellent, thorough video - I've subscribed to your channel and bookmarked this page - It's going to come in very handy. Thanks for all your work on this - Great job !!
+Parthiv Ravindran No side effects, maybe fuel efficiency will drop very slightly? (Time will tell) But it's all on the outlet side, the o2 sensors are still in place and my bike has been remapped for the off road high level pipes (which bypass the cat)
Newbie question, Would removing the catalytic converter make the bike no longer legal to ride on the road? Also did you declare this to your insurer and it was no issue? Thankss
There has been no change on the inlet side it still has the stock filter and air of. The bike also has the Vance & Hines hi-level exhaust map. (This exhaust obviously also doesn’t have a catalytic converter). Do short answer is no, it doesn’t damage the engine
No not remove, you need to unbolt the mount, well loosen it to be precise, to allow you to swing the bottom frame rail out of the way. It’s covered in the video
Hi to the mancave, I contacted my triumph dealer about having a free spirits xpipe fitted and was told they don’t do anything but make more noise, and that triumph do not recommend it now I’m confused. Help!
Sounds like they don’t want to do the job Russell. The do add a little more Bhp, not much, but it’ll also save quite a bit of weight and heat. As for Triumph not recommending them, well my local dealer stocks, sells and fits them for customers.
Dominic Nguyễn Is it actually 'backfiring' or just popping on overrun? Have you checked the MPG? as mine isn't much different to stock. I personally think the remap is worth it. Might also be worth checking all your connections again to make sure their 'airtight'
I'll record a short video about the sound and send the link to you. I don't have much experience so I can't tell you exactly what it is. In my country have no AD, so I don't know where can re-map the bike.
I have a Bonneville T120, do you think I can get away with installing the x-pipe just using my center stand to keep the bike stable? A mechanic will charge me at least $80.00 an hour, and a bike lift is a bit expensive.
+adam kotch Should be no problem depending on where the centre stand mounts. The left side frame rail needs to be unbolted. Having said that I know people have tackled it from the other side and left the bike on its kickstand! It's just a bit more fiddly.
Views from the Man Cave , Thank you! I'm going either go through the right hand side with the kickstand engaged or I might buy a paddock stand. I'm not sure yet.
Can you please verify the torque settings? I have seen different torque setting suggested on other x-pipe videos and I am unable to find a service manual. Thanks!
No, particularly if just fitting the xpipe, if you go ahead with free flow pipes then maybe. I had the V&H hi level scrambler map flashed after I fitted the US spec pipes and it did make a difference
Thanks Ian, but why assume the Freespirits one uses 'off the shelf' bits. As far as I'm aware it was designed entirely in-house and was the first one on the market by a long way
If you look at the bends there are 2 welds on each pipe which would only be there if a spacer had to be used to give the correct distance. If the bends were custom engineered for the correct fitment that wouldn't be necessary. IMHO that denotes the use of of the shelf bends. I have no connection with TEC parts apart from being a satisfied customer. You should check out the website they do some really good parts for Triumph and most are considerably less expensive and better engineered than some of the "brand" names.
+Ian Batterham I'll investigate further. By the same token I have no affiliation with Freespirits, but I do know they spend a lot of time and money on r&d and engineering. I had a pair of TEC shocks on my old MotoGuzzi.
Ian Batterham I'd agree with that and then raise you a Meerkat. His welds are flawless and less weight with the unnecessary bracketry and bigger jucnction. Yes unnecessary brackets no question. He also makes beautiful pipes by hand. Craftsman
+David Forbes I would argue that the 'bracketry' is required to add strength and support both headers. I certainly wouldnt be happy with one which is just two pipes welded together. They don't offer anything to stop the two headers flexing. Triumph didn't add mounts to the frame and cat for no reason. Both the Freespirits and TEC cross pipes bolt to all the factory mounts.
I appreciate your quick response. I installed the local Thai made x pipe and it just fall out after the 3 hours ride non stop. Now I just sent the bike back to the Triumph dealer in Hatyai, Thailand. So I am looking for the best, so none of this will happen again. What do you recommend? Will the Freespirit X pipe last a long time even after bumps on the roads and long ride. And will Freespirit loosen up and fell off?
Hard to say, Freespirits suggest 4hp, but for me it wasnt about more power per se. With the US spec Vance & Hines pipe and the 2into1 remap the bike feels perkier with a snappier throttle response. It also sounds better with a nice crackle and a bark when you need it. I may try and compare mine with a stock bike on a dyno, but figures on paper don't mean too much, its how the bike feels.
Views from the Man Cave When I was typing it I assumed you wouldnt want to haha ill contact free spirits and try to get an answer so we can know the weight savings based on your weighing of the cat. edit: contacted freespirits and am waiting for a reply but until then I have found a dealer that says the x pipe weighs 2.1 pounds
Views from the Man Cave freespirits got back and they say 890 grams or 1.962 pounds. I've also ordered my own and its on the way .... all this talk and I couldnt resist it anymore lol
Devin Allen Good question, The dealers fit the Vance and Hines hi level pipes which completely avoid the cat, so I can't see the difference? The cat is part of the exhaust system, nothing else, so surely shouldn't effect the warranty? I'm no expert on manufacturer warranties though.....
I’ve not seen the bc one first hand, but they are essentially the same thing. Freespirits where first to market, they include detailed instructions with every part and the production quality is top class. It fitted perfectly and I’ve had no issues with it
Hi Gary, it could be done with the Tank on, but access to the top frame bolt is then very tricky. In my mind the time taken in removing the tank is time saved in undoing that bolt. There is also a risk of damaging the tank getting to said bolt

Great video. You saved me countless hours by posting such thorough guidance.
Glad it helped!
Great video, and really helped me get ready for the upcoming task. Would also recommend that you increase your rear sprocket by 2 teeth to 39T

Great vid. Not sure why the tank needs removing?
You don’t have to, but it makes it much easier to get to the top frame bolt
@@mancavemoto - understood. Thanks 😊
Cheers.
+MrToonfish Thanks Eric, proof that if I can do it, anyone can do it..... :)
Two questions though:
Where ca we get the Triumph manual (so to know the torque settings for each screw);
Can we get a torque tool on any hardware store or are they special made somehow?
Ricardo Silva Makes sense and you should be able to order the US slip on from your local Triumph Dealer
Thank you Tony. Will check it out.
When you fit the rear clamps to the X Pipe do they sit completely on the X Pipe or half and half with the rear silencer? Thanks in advance.
they slip onto the rear silencer
Hi Patrick, I had mine installed at the Triumph dealer in Ipswich, Suffolk Triumph. Where are you based?
i thought the ecu did the remap ? i was told to let it idle until the fan kicked on and it would remap itself by then ?
Sounds mint! Great tutorial. 👍🏻
Cotti thanks
Your bike sounds amazing, I don't have the workspace to be able to do this kind of work, might get away with putting the silencers on tho
+theglynux The slip ons make a big difference from stock.
Awesome Video....Man you keep making me spend more money!!!!
Haha sorry Moto Buck's!
I JUST WANT HIM TO DO IT RIGHT
Cheers, Happy belated thanksgiving
It sounds great.. please do a video of just the exhaust only.. like a flyby may be..
Can't speak yet to power increase as I just took a quick spin around the block and it was late.
no you don't...
Tony, can you share the website for Free Spirits? I'm having difficulty locating their site to place the order for the X pipe. Thank you.
Hi Don, the website is www.freespiritsparts.com/en/ but they now only sell through dealers. You can find your nearest dealer on the site here www.freespiritsparts.com/en/contact-us/
Very cool vid again tony... How do you know so much? And how are you so fearless on your brand new bike? Were you a mechanic? A triumph one maybe...
filmdetective haha, no not a mechanic just showing that a lot of this stuff is not beyond the capabilities of anyone. It's only a machine, just like a bit Lego kit! Nothing to be scared of.
True, true... And thanks for it... But you do seem to know the ins and outs of this bike, is there a guide or something?
filmdetective Just reading, google and talking to people...lol
Excellent video !
Hi,
Amazing mod and the sound is definitely more aggressive and throaty. My question is, by fitting the X-Pipe only after decat with stock exhaust, will it stress the engine pistons more in the long term? Will it be in the safer limit by not causing any significant extra wear and tear?
Cheers!
Saravana Kumar No deleting the cat won’t put any more stress on the pistons, it doesn’t make the engine rev any higher.
Views from the Man Cave Wow, that was quick Sir. Thank you very much for clarifying!
Love the mirrors and the fuel cap where did you get those?
The mirrors are Triumph accessory bar end mirrors and the fuel cap is from Motone Customs
Thank you for making such useful video!!!
No worries!
Great video! I have my pipes coming in next week and can't wait to use this video to install it. But I have a question. What do you mean by remap?
+Kingline07 A new map for the ECU to adjust for the different pipes. Not essential, but it helps if you choose the v&h US spec slip ons or hi level pipes
That was a total stripdown wow
Yep theres a few bits to come off to fit it, not too bad a job though
Wrapped pipes can look great, I did it on my old Moto Guzzi. Rust shouldn't be an issue if you use decent wrap with stainless steel pipes....
Tony, I’m curious where you sourced torque specs for the frame cradle bolts...Haynes puts top and rear at 40 Nm and middle at 105 Nm rather than 45 and 80, respectively (though I’ve seen 45 and 80 in several videos)...
Mine come from the Triumph factory manual, which is why I’m happy to quote them
Thanks for the tutorial
No problem!
thank you so much for doing this!! i was holding off because i kept hearing it was such a pain but this would cut that at least in half. any reason i couldn't do it with just a rear stand? thanks again Sir.
+scott willson No problem, and yes a rear stand would be perfect for this job!
Very good video. thanks!
Hi,
your bike sounds very well
Did you put on an off road (US SPEC) Vanes and Hine exshaust ?
Thanks for your answer.
Thomas From France
Hi Thomas, yes i did, check out the other videos on my channel
Hi Tony, I've just put on the Xpipe today. 2,5 hours of work...very quick!!
Thanks a lot for your very clear explainations on your video.
My bike sounds much better.
Nice one Thomas!
Hey Tony, are you planning to do the Air Filter from Free Spirit too? I'm in doubt because it could tough my leg.... Keep up the great work. ;)
Jo Stroobants Hi, I've no plans too. I'm not keen on the look of it to be honest and once you start messing with the inlet end then AF ratios etc become a worry. To me anyway
They're saying it shouldn't be a problem with the self learning engine now, not decided yet...
Jo Stroobants me neither, but I'm not keen on the look
Hi.!!! I'm purchasing a new bike , which one do you recommend more. T100 or new speed twin??.
Best regards
Hhhm bith great bikes, I guess it largelt comes down to which one you like the look of, and if you want more performance or not?
Hi Tony,
Do you think it would be very noisy if I put on a V&H US spec with no baffle associated to my X-pipe which is already on my bike?
Hi there. Did you get engine heat from the twin? I’ve read heat being an issue for the street twin.
I didn't no and i've not heard of excessive heat being an issue for the Street Twin
is it 18 NM or 80NM for main bolt of engine
It's 80nm, I should have put text on the screen.
Question:
Having the exhaust make a sharp 90 degree turn, then a horseshoe-shaped "U" turn, and then another sharp 90 degree turn adds a lot of resistance, and causes the exhaust to slow down.
If you added a piece of straight pipe between the header and tail pipe, wouldn't it increase the flow and increase the amount of scavenging, thereby adding even more performance, if it could be anchored to the frame for added strength?
+Clyde Butler True, but you do need to link both sides, so the x-pipe fulfills both requirements of less resistance and balance
Ah! I Didn't know that they were connected (balanced). Makes sense now. Thanks.
Lovely sound but is it really worth the hassle?
In a word, yes
Hi, what do you think between x-pipe + stock muffler and catalytic + slip-ons? Sound and performance
Hi, A tricky question to answer. I originally fitted the v&h slip ons with the cat in place and it did make an immediate improvement in the sound. Performance not so much. When i fitted the x-pipe there was a noticable 'pep' in the throttle response and the bike felt more lively. If was going to choose between the two
Thank you very much.
Well, the tongues are waggin on the forums and you know what? They're right! Excellent, thorough video - I've subscribed to your channel and bookmarked this page - It's going to come in very handy. Thanks for all your work on this - Great job !!
It still sounds great with the stock pipes but really does need the fueling remapped.
Hi Tony,
Does removing the cat have any side effects to the motor?
Won't this affect efficiency?
+Parthiv Ravindran No side effects, maybe fuel efficiency will drop very slightly? (Time will tell) But it's all on the outlet side, the o2 sensors are still in place and my bike has been remapped for the off road high level pipes (which bypass the cat)
Does the tank actually have to come off? I guess it makes it a little easier but I suspect the job can be done without the added complication?
It makes it easier to access the top bolt, but it can be done without the removal yes
Newbie question, Would removing the catalytic converter make the bike no longer legal to ride on the road? Also did you declare this to your insurer and it was no issue? Thankss
It doesn’t in the UK, I reported the mod to my insurers and it made no difference to my policy.
@@mancavemoto thanks for the prompt reply. Appreciate your videos 🙏
Decat will change the air fuel ratio. Does change in air fuel ratio damage the engine ?
There has been no change on the inlet side it still has the stock filter and air of. The bike also has the Vance & Hines hi-level exhaust map. (This exhaust obviously also doesn’t have a catalytic converter). Do short answer is no, it doesn’t damage the engine
Hi Tony. What's your bike's average FC before and after X-pipe installation?
Thanks.
Hi chong-keng limdr, to be honest no real difference after installling the xpipe
Do I have to remove the kickstand be be able to remove the catalytic converter
No not remove, you need to unbolt the mount, well loosen it to be precise, to allow you to swing the bottom frame rail out of the way. It’s covered in the video
Any idea if you can install an x-pipe on a T120 if it’s sitting on the centre stand?
Good question Will, I’d need to look at how it mounts to the frame
Same process for Thruxton 1200? Or any other modern classic?
Pretty much, there are few variances, but nothing too different
Are the twin and street cup the same since they have the same motor?
In terms of the xpipe fitment, yes they are
Awesome thank you
Do you need to re-map the ECU since now there's less restriction from the exhaust? how about the high pipes from triumph?
ripmax333 I remapped, and used the one for the Vance & Hines Hi level Scrambler pipe (as it obviously bypasses the catalytic converter)
and the remapping has to be done by a triumph dealer or it can be done at home?
ripmax333 I had mine done at the dealer. Quick & cheap
Views from the Man Cave ibe been told to disconnect the battery and wait a while then te connect and ride the bike and the computer resets
+David Forbes Interesting, not heard that
did you try it with the stock silencers?
TEC Bike Parts No, I already had the v&h fitted and the bike remapped
would there be a difference then?

Hi to the mancave, I contacted my triumph dealer about having a free spirits xpipe fitted and was told they don’t do anything but make more noise, and that triumph do not recommend it now I’m confused. Help!
Sounds like they don’t want to do the job Russell. The do add a little more Bhp, not much, but it’ll also save quite a bit of weight and heat. As for Triumph not recommending them, well my local dealer stocks, sells and fits them for customers.
Hey man, do I really need to re-map? I just intall the XPipe for my T120, backfire and running out of fuel quickly is what I feel.
In my country have no AD, so I don't know where can re-map the bike.
can I have a link to the video please as my T120 seems to 'Backfire' when I decelerate
I did it using the center stand with no problem. Which remap did you use?
Adam Kotch I had the map for the high level Vance & Hines pipes which bypass the cat
Views from the Man Cave, did you have it remapped at the Triumph dealership?
Can you please verify the torque settings? I have seen different torque setting suggested on other x-pipe videos and I am unable to find a service manual. Thanks!
stephen glass I'll sort them out for you
Views from the Man Cave thank you!
Hi Stephen, the figures I quote in the video are direct from Freespirits and match the factory numbers
Thank you! Now to get to it. I am installing a different brand and they provided no instructions.
stephen glass Ah, well if you had bought the Freespirits one you would have got full instructions!
Does the ECM need to be reprogramed after this mod ?
No, particularly if just fitting the xpipe, if you go ahead with free flow pipes then maybe. I had the V&H hi level scrambler map flashed after I fitted the US spec pipes and it did make a difference
Will the bike need a remap after a decat?
Hi Marc, it doesn't NEED one, but it think the bike is better with the V&H 'offroad' map
@@mancavemoto did you take the bike to dealership to tune the ECU with the V&H offroad map? or did you do it?
roberto ribeiro it was done at the dealer
What's the score with insurance companies on fitting a de-cat?
wozza59 Great question
I suppose it could be awkward actually telling the company that the bike no longer meets certain rules.
TEC parts in UK make a better piece of kit imho. Proper custom bends rather than off the shelf bits.
Can you use this exact free spirit x pipe on Bonneville T120? Will it fit perfectly?
+Alam Khan Yes you can, and yes it will
I appreciate your quick response.
+Alam Khan The Freespirits one fits in exactly the same way as the factory CAT, so it won't loosen and fall off!
Views from the Man Cave do you need to welding it?
+Alam Khan No, take a look at my install video
Hola ! Cuáles son los beneficios del xpipe ?
Weight, sound and a little more power
Anybody know if this will work with the Vance & Hines high pipe installed?
Hi Chris, if you are fitting the high pipes then the cat is completely bypassed anyway. Did no need for one
Would this fit the 2014 Bonneville t100?
No it doesn’t fit the aircooled models
Views from the Man Cave Is there another way to give it more aggressive sound?
Does anyone know where I can get one of these in the UK?
www.freespiritsparts.com/en/contact-us Theres a 'Find Dealer' search on the website

How much horsepower would i gain from an x pipe?
Hard to say, Freespirits suggest 4hp, but for me it wasnt about more power per se. With the US spec Vance & Hines pipe and the 2into1 remap the bike feels perkier with a snappier throttle response. It also sounds better with a nice crackle and a bark when you need it. I may try and compare mine with a stock bike on a dyno, but figures on paper don't mean too much, its how the bike feels.

Does anyone know what the weight of the original cat and the x pipe are?
Blind Archer I can weigh the cat, Freespirits can probably do the same for the x-pipe (I'm not taking it off again to weigh it lol)
Blind Archer I should have done it when I had them both on the bench....
Views from the Man Cave freespirits got back and they say 890 grams or 1.962 pounds. I've also ordered my own and its on the way .... all this talk and I couldnt resist it anymore lol
Well its quite a difference! the cat weighs 2341 grams or 5lb 2oz....
I would imagine that this mod would void the warranty wouldn't it?
Devin Allen Good question, The dealers fit the Vance and Hines hi level pipes which completely avoid the cat, so I can't see the difference? The cat is part of the exhaust system, nothing else, so surely shouldn't effect the warranty? I'm no expert on manufacturer warranties though.....
How much for the Xpipe Triumph T100 900 cc
You'll have to google that i'm afraid
For us who have the Thruxton R 2016 I've yet to see it on anyones vid.
If I had one to use, i'd gladly film it! Perhaps a Thruxton R owner would like one fitted?
What are your thoughts about the British Customs competition header made in USA which is the same as the X-pipe from Free Spirit
I’ve not seen the bc one first hand, but they are essentially the same thing. Freespirits where first to market, they include detailed instructions with every part and the production quality is top class. It fitted perfectly and I’ve had no issues with it
Views from the Man Cave thank you for the feed back do you have an Instagram or just TH-cam account
Cafe6Racer Yep, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
Job one: disconnect the battery. Always :)
Bogumil M why do you need to disconnect the battery
Why take out the Cat and put in an Xpipe?
Sounds better, lighter, slightly quicker throttle response and a very small HP gain
I see no benefit to removing the gas tank. This is an exhaust project on the lower end of the bike. Unless you're a clutz, the tank could stay on.
Hi Gary, it could be done with the Tank on, but access to the top frame bolt is then very tricky. In my mind the time taken in removing the tank is time saved in undoing that bolt. There is also a risk of damaging the tank getting to said bolt
Good video, but after seeing how excessive it is to switch the cat out I’m don’t think I’m going to do it
Thanks, it’s not as bad as it looks and in hindsight if you don’t mind making access to the top frame bolt harder, you can leave the tank in place
