  • The Medfly or Ceratitis capitata (not to be confused with Drosophila - what the Americans call fruit flies) is one of the most destructive insect pests in the world. One female can sting 1000's of fruit and I contacted Fruitfly Africa for advice (www.fruitfly.co.za/ ) . I bought the traps and lures from a local agri business (www.inteligro.co.za/ ). There are 2 types of lures - one for females and a separate one for males.
The lures can also be purchased directly from: (chempac.net/product.php?pid=1... )
The results were absolutely spectacular! Thousands of males captured within days, with the (imaginary) wailing of bereaved widows ringing in my ears.
It is very much a hands-off approach. Hang the traps and stay away for a few days - which I didn't do as I was just too curious.
We should see the first results in a few months when the Guavas get ripe, but will only know by October what the final tally will be as the Apricots and Apples ripen again.
I'll follow up in another year.

I want to grow apples for the exact same reason! 'm in Gauteng, where Living Seeds has a whole lot of different lures for all sorts of pesky fruit crop destroyers.

I understand the male attractant is Methyl Eugenol, I think that can probably be purchased from other sources relatively cheaply, as it is used in a variety of products.
Look it up on TH-cam and you will how to repurpose 2L plastic bottles. I think you could make several equivalent traps for next to nothing.
You might try Marmite, Sugar water mix as a female lure, that is a bait lure as opposed to a pheromone as high protein food is attractive to mated females before laying eggs. As you can see it is a less effective trap.
