  • This week we ditch the motor and fish from a small row boat. We entered a human-powered fishing derby in hopes of winning big prizes and having a great adventure! Hope you enjoy coming along as we catch and cook some fish.

    That kelp would be great in the garden.

      That broken oat had me thinking about all the other things we needed in case of emergency. It’s challenging since we don’t have much room in the boat. I was really glad the wind pushed us in to town and not out to deeper water.

    What a fun trip! I was watching with binoculars as you inched back to town and got your oar fixed. So glad it all worked out!! The fish was delicious 😋

      We use peanut or vegetable oil. I usually strain out the oil each time and use it 2-3 times before changing.

      I think Halibut fillets are selling for $15+ a pound right now, so definitely a nice $$ savings by catching it ourselves.

    I was so thrilled to watch you catch a fish for your FAMILY using a paddleboat. Mark you have the greatest one liners, they crack us up. You should write a Tall Tale story about that Fishing Derby. You guys did great. I was kinda nervous for you trying to rescue the otters in the Kayak. Glad to see someone came to the rescue. The Boys did a great job. Long day.
    It was great seeing your Dad, it has been a while.
    I love watching you cook Mark. That meal looked delicious. I love tartar sauce. Thanks for taking us along on this Adventure. Fishing the old fashioned way.

      Going out in a rowboat is sure humbling to see what people used to do, but also empowering because it shows you can still catch good food fish without a $20,000 boat.

    Thanks for trying to help the otters! Awesome fishing trip guys! The fish fry looked delicious !

      It was sad to hear the otters suffering, but I’m glad we were able to get someone out there to help them. I almost flipped my kayak trying to help them and didn’t have the camera rolling due to needing to focus on the task. I decided it would be wrong to cut the net since it’s the livelihood for the families in the community, so I’m glad that in the end I it all worked out for the otters and the fisherman.

    Thank you for trying to help those Sea Otters, your call saved there lives!!! 🌼

      We don’t do many fishing derbies, but this one is such a fun community event we’ve started doing it each year. The focus on this derby is really about getting kids out fishing, so hard to not like that.

    How exciting! Way to go Hunter. Up the creek w/o a paddle had me laughing. Great job Dad, boys had a blast and so did I.

      I used to be bad at cleaning fish too. It just takes practice, and a nice sharp knife.

    Great catch Hunter, you too Bennett sorry Mark☹️ I was wondering when you had a fish & Hunter said look at all the sea life & the fish had bumps/lumps what did that mean? Love your videos I get to see your adventures & I learn new stuff too

    • @AlaskaBoys
      @AlaskaBoys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hunter said “sea lice,” they are a small organism that sometimes grows on fish and can cause small sores. You see it often on salmon just behind the anal fin.

    I have a weird question about the fish bc I know TH-cam doesn't allow certain things..do you stun the fish ( that's what I call it)..not sure if that's the proper term..but I heard Mark say to Hunter to let it bleed out in the water but don't lose it. so maybe it's a diff way? I'm sure the vegans are going to have a field day w this. but sorry I love meat 🍖

    • @AlaskaBoys
      @AlaskaBoys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We make a few quick cuts on the gills of the fish and allow them to quickly bleed out. It quickly kills the fish and removes most of the blood from the meat which leaves you with much better food quality.
