So, if I’m understanding correctly George made a decision to take a gamble, he won, and many praised him for making that call. But in reality it was the wrong call because it ended with him being underweight and actually losing the race.

This. First time really after brazil 22 where merc controlled a race on merit and were within a strat windows optimal for victory, not a single mention of that achievement or acknowledging lewis’s effort to control the race from lights to flag.. it’s becoming gleaming like clear. Just seems like they forgot the last 3years and just act like they’ve been winning all these races all along and it was a silly mistake that ‘took away George’s win’?

Lewis was being told to lift and coast throughout the race. At about lap 25-29 GR garage knew he was thinking the 1-stop, Bono didn’t tell Lewis this. Earlier comms mean Lewis would’ve picked up the pace and pass with more laps to spare. George was cruising and saving tire so he had enough to hold off Lewis for 3 laps but not enough to be legal.

@@tigerrx7 Well said, plus other cars were likely more disadvantaged than it appeared given they had to have one litre of fuel weight for a sample, so they'd really be 798+ one litre of fuel at minimum, plus margin.
George did too but I think would have been taken from his 2.8 litres of fuel he was over. May be wrong but it was his dry weight that was 796.5kg.
I think people may underestimate thinking about just x lap time per lap gain per kg, if George can push flat out and needs no lift and coast that's a lot more free lap time, plus carrying less weight burns less fuel anyway.

It's funny on how people think sabotage or whatever between 2 of them. I always look into the incident to avoid perspective bias swapping 2 driver situation.
If Lewis & George position swapped for this race, it would result: all media would brag about the lewis deserved the win and blame the team instead as headline. You know the rest, it would be totally different with current situation perceived.
They started almost same weight mentioned here (i trust debrief info more than speculate flyer), maybe those lift and coast brought lewis car back above weight limit, the team helped him out of DQ this time?

All i saw from the race was the team was willing to sacrifice a race win in order for George to finish ahead of Lewis.
You have a driver in P2 with much fresher tyres, lapping a significant better timing but decides to use the driver in P1 on a 30+ laps stint to hold up the teammate behind whom have been controlling the whole race with Oscar behind in P3 catching up.
George finishing ahead of Lewis was the priority and not securing the win.

A PR masterpiece from Mercedes, this video debrief. A lot of words without actually answering anything meaningful. Of course, volunteering this information is exactly that - voluntary - but don't dress it up as the answers to the questions we've been waiting for.
You could have cleared up the mixed reports on why the car was presented for weighing with still too much fuel in
What is the truth behind reports Lewis had asked in the pre-race discussion about 'considering' the one stop only to be told emphatically it was a no-go and to then see his team mate who was absolutely nowhere be switched to this to gain track position on him
Why Toto Wolff's expression immediately after securing a 1-2 was anything but the face of a man who had just achieved such a result
Why - despite all the tyre talk - did other one stoppers pass the weight legality rule but your car didn't
And why the option of switching the 'hugely worn' tyres with an FIA approved set wasn't bothered with as the car was still going to be underweight, therefore making all this 'excessive wear from long stint' chat a red herring.

2:52 "It was a decision taken by the strategy team..." The very same strategy team who over the last decade (difficult metric for some of you people to measure up to I know) have been very open and public about the complexity of their strategy formula, the various simulations they use to extrapolate real-time data into race results, and finally viewing strategy as objectively as they can. Shov goes on to mention that had they stopped George at the same time they'd stopped Lewis (which was only to cover Ferrari), he'd likely have finished 5th or 6th. Another commenter on this video points out that the strategy team had the 1-2 finish in mind (as they should) and by running this particular strategy on this particular day on a hot circuit where Merc hasn't been strong - Both drivers ended up getting the job done, but one came in underweight for reasons well above either of us.
Same thing happened to Vettel and we have every reason to assume he'd be on the receiving end of some sketchy orders or strategy to benefit Daddy's Boy but it simply wasn't the case, the car just burned too much gas.
Having two competent drivers delivering good results regularly is a blessing, Red Bull can't say the same thing. You lot are the reason the factory needs to call the cops, calm down.

A career in politics awaits Shov. Lots of words but no answers. The cars may well have weighed the same at the start of the race, but there are so many questions. I would place a small wager that in all the specification changes and the GR crews inability to pump out the tank, the base weight of the car was lost. You didnt answer why the pitwall took so long to inforn Lewis that Russell had changed the team strategy? Telling the car in first to lift and coast, save tyre, keep Charles out of DRS but no more and we'll be fighting Piastri at the end and neglecting to inform Lewis of the team strategy change was not cricket. No wonder Toto was skulking about in the garage at the end.

The scrutineers stopped draining because the car was way more than 1.5 kg underweight. They dialed up George engine mode as well that’s why when Lewis caught that boy George he couldn’t pass. So much lighter car and more power. The only intention Mercedes had was to benefit George and nothing else.
In the end God Almighty struck Toto and bed buddy George with pure KARMA for a DQ. To your face from all F1 fans and those who had fu’kery, that’s what you get Toto for consistently trying to undermine Lewis because you and your fake team show the world you can care less about him.

Do you not realize that different drivers doing different tyre strategies will affect the cars in different ways? Older tyres with worse grip means even faster tyre wear (aka. weight loss). He also mentioned higher plank wear. That can come from many different sources, but assuming the setup is identical, it's likely due to the worn tires too.
I doubt they're retelling the entire report they've likely written up, but I also doubt Shov's lying here. The most likely explanation is that the weight margins were planned for a two stop, they never expected to do a one stop, then ensed up being under weight due to the one stop. Something we see from the fact that the car that did the two stop was over the weight limit. It would be really weird to only cheat on George's side. An honest mistake is a far more likely explanation

There's no need to look at the data Shov! The one stop strategy was discounted in the am strategy meeting presumably because of weight fears. Lewis's side of the garage were on top of the weight issue, because he was even told to "lift and coast" at the start, due to underfuelling. George needs to get the "Me, Me, Me" out of his head, if he wants to be a Team Leader! His arrogant attitude and the Teams pathetic failure to rein him in cost the Team valuable Championship points! Shovlin explained already that the cars weighed the same at the start of the race, so no advantage for George over Lewis. The reason George was DSQed and not Lewis is Lewis had newer tires and George had badly worn tires. Lewis would have been DSQed also if not for his 2 stop. He was apparently 0.5kg over minimum limit, which is nothing. So really the reason George was DSQed was Mercedes screwed up. Here is what I think really happened, since Shovlin doesn't outright say it. This is not a Lewis vs George thing, but a calculated risk by the team which didn't pan out.
The issue is they ran both cars at the edge of the minimum weight limit. Both cars started at the same weight, so there was no advantage to either driver. By the end of the race George was underweight with badly worn tires, and Hamilton just barely over at by 0.5kg on much newer tires. Multiple other teams/drivers ran one stop strategies and were over the limit.
Look at Toto's expression at the end of the race. They knew they blew it and George would probably be disqualified. So the real question is, why did they not overrule George wanting to one stop to avoid him being disqualified? Probably they figured it was worth the risk, as he would have finished P6 otherwise. If it pays off, it's a 1-2 finish. If it fails, the point loss wouldn't be massive. Lewis was going to win, or finish second in a 1-2 finish for the team. They played it more conservative with him to ensure at least one of the drivers gets max points for the team.
This is not the first time the team has been disqualified for flying too close to sun (Lewis Brazil for plank). Seems they haven't fully learned their lesson yet. George probably feels robbed and Lewis probably lost a bit of trust with the team.

    • @alexandershaw2378
      @alexandershaw2378 หลายเดือนก่อน

Both cars were not at the minimum weight limit. George's car was found to be 1.5 KG's lighter after dry weighing the car.
Let us unpack the facts a little.
-Mercedes gave the scrutineer's George's car with 2.8 liters of fuel after draining the mandatory 1 liter required to be used for a sample.
-The scrutineer's found that the car was exactly at 798 KG's, or the minimum weight requirement, even with 2.8 liters of fuel still being in the fuel cell.
-They proceeded to completely drain the fuel cell where it was discovered to have a dry weight of 796.5 KG's, making it lighter by 1.5 KG's than the legality of technical directive 4.1 Minimum Mass under *"MASS"* pp 45.
It states *_"The mass of the car, without fuel, must not be less than 798kg at all times during the Competition. If, when required for checking, a car is not already fitted with dry-weather tires, its mass will be determined using a set of dry-weather tires selected by the FIA technical delegate."_*
-When Mercedes started the race, George's car had more fuel, an extra 2.5KG's worth of fuel to make it *"equal weight"* with Lewis', which was weighed at a dry weight of 799 KG's after the race.
-According to the technical directive concerning the mass of the car, the FIA placed brand new tires on both George's and Lewi's cars to establish a baseline then subtract the difference when weighed with the worn tires they used during the race.
-George was not told at any point during the race to _"manage his tires"_ or _"to lift and coast"_ as they were telling Lewis to do. So for Shov to say there was _"no advantage"_ that George had over Lewis is a blatant lie.
-Mercedes is gaslighting us and insulting our intelligence.
That statement you made about _"by the end of the race George was underweight with badly worn tires, and Hamilton just barely over at by 0.5kg on much newer tires"_ was inaccurate because Lewis' car was weighed and was at a dry weight of 799 KG's.
Conclusion: Mercedes knew full well *before* the start of the race the George's car was underweight. They are gaslighting their fanbase, colluding with George to undermine Lewis and insulting our intelligence to think that we would not notice the discrepancies in their rhetoric and their behavior; it does not run parallel.

We hope MERC can provide more details on this matter to help us understand how the weight compliance issue caused George Russell's loss. It seems that MERC was aware of the weight issue immediately after the car entered Parc Ferme following the race. The oil was not drained as per procedure until the FIA directed the team to do so again.
In that same race, a few teams that also used a one-stop strategy appeared to meet the weight requirements, indicating that this issue is likely not just due to the tires.

According to Bernie Collin’s, a reputable race strategist and engineer, she stated they stopped draining because it was already underweight. This means that it was MORE than 1.5KG underweight. When jolyon Palmer explained this as well he said there is much more going on behind the scenes at Mercedes.
Basically. Mercedes knew they were underweight because that was their intention. They cheated and lied with trying to spoonfeed their woody weaksuck George high pitched blimey voice.
Mercedes look like blasphemous fools and I have zero respect for this team. It had been better if they admitted they were wrong for cheating and trying to screw over Lewis to benefit George. I do want to thank Shov for admitting that GR had an advantage over LH. I want to admonish him for dismissing it, though.

Yes you are being gaslighted here. Think of it as if you are in that situation and you have to take corrective actions to finish the race without a DSQ. You can either start the race with a 1.5kg weight ballast and carry that from beginning to end to make up for the offset or you would drastically reduce your pace, lift/ coast, pickup marbles off the racing line, not defend when cars rock up on you and avoid dirty air ... in both instances you become a sitting duck for Lewis and Oscar. Plus more plank wear he mentions means the car was maybe 1mm closer to the ground because of the rubber lost in tires meaning Russell had a benefit of extra down force from ground effects to offset the fresher tires of Lewis and Oscar which again is a performance advantage. This was gaslighting 101 a total bogus simplifying as it was a gradual linear advantage gain ... BS and Shov knows better.
Why a need to soft peddle for George like that is so unnecessary but I do get he can't say you caught us cheating and George had a massive advantage. Any team would minimize said impact to save face I suppose.

  • @mabdinur85
    @mabdinur85 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

Way I see it is the team used fuel as ballast on George's car and went into parc ferme that way after qualifying. This may explain the George qualifying advantage over Hamilton because the second quali stint is where more fuel can be added as ballast to hide the weight difference. Lewis was managing the race with lift/ coast instructions and George was pedal to the medal because that was best for both in their stints based on where on the grid they were starting. George going in longer stint made more wear and that was a contribution factor for sure as more plank is used when more tires are lost (ride height drops a bit). Here's the part I don't get the team had data on the rate of deg on the hard from Lewis 2nd stop so why wasn't the loss of weight concerns not conveyed to George. Instructions to watch for tire life, to pick marbles that last lap, to lift and coast etc not expressed to George. You guys had the data and as Shovlin just said you knew the tire would last for 1 stop because of that data. Such a shame for the team that George's side of the pitwall chose to gamble and lose valuable constructors points because they did not mitigate the DSQ risk from Spa. They knew the team knew and instead of saving the race from DSQ by instructing him on how to manage the weight issue you squandered valuable constructors points. This was a total let down for the team, Mercedes dropped the ball on a massive points haul by squandering a P1-P2 finish ... heck even a P1-P4 finish would be a better consolation. What were you lot thinking, you're better than these dumb gamble hail-mary options that bring a DSQ ... this has totally let down the team in race to fight for constructor points ... what were you guys thinking?
Also it's obvious George had an advantage what BS are you all waffling on about. How else are you going to get over 1.5kg deficit other than adding 1.5kg at the start to offset the final weight or by slowing his drive and picking up marbles in the final moments of the race therefore compromising his pace? That is a lie to say no advantage and questions our intelligence. 1.5kg DSQ factor is an advantage George carried the whole race not just ramped up when wear began because you have to offset it to still avoid the DSQ.

    • @jf9601
      @jf9601 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Exactly this. The car was presented for scrutineering bang on the weight limit and the team had signed off confirming that the car as presented was already sans the required fuel sample - 1ltr I believe. It hadn’t, so much so that the scrutineers were able to extract more than the minimum of 1ltr - and there was still fuel in the car. So the 1.5kg below weight penalty is not actually accurate - the car weighed even less had all the fuel been drained out.
20 years ago, BAR, now AMG F1, were done for using fuel as ballast. I hope history is not repeating itself.

They failed the team man, Mercedes gave up valuable constructors points in a tight constructors fight shaping up. Such a shame for the team, it was a great strat but the team should have communicated how to save the weight to avoid a DSQ. They had the tire deg data from when Lewis pitted the 2nd time so they knew enough to save the weight and avoid a DSQ. They are not saying much here and are electing to hide details for optics but they let down the team in squandering the constructors points there's no doubts about that.

@@jf9601 I don't know if it is to that extent of BAR or if it was malicious but something is fishy in all of this and FIA better have their wits about them because how much exactly was lost in tires and plank. They're not giving us the details to reverse engineer what weight the cars started off as once fuel is factored out and that is super suspect to me (although I get it's a sport you might want to keep your cards hidden). My best guess they used 750gr to 1kg in fuel as ballast the remaining was the regular wear/ tear you can expect from 1 stopper. Also let's say it was all tires for the sake of assumptions ... they knew the rate of deg on the Hards so why wasn't alarm bells going off? What systems failed, where was the failure here?
My question is once the lights went out and cars went underway ... was their anything George could do to save his race from DSQ or was the eror baked in so that he was always going to get a DSQ? I don't see the team giving an emphatic nod to them being able to do something to avoid this catastrophic outcome for the team.
