Rethymno is a city of little more than 30,000 people.

We were there at the beginning of August, there were very few tourists then. I can recommend The Fortezza fortress - beautiful view of the city. Walk around the old town with its beautiful narrow streets and the Rimondi fountain. Old Venetian Port with a lighthouse. And of course some really nice beaches. Unfortunately we were too short to discover many other cool places in town, hope you will see a lot more :) Enjoy your stay.
