  • The New School (www.newschool.edu) presents a conversation between Diane von Furstenberg, celebrated fashion designer and chair of the Council of Fashion Designer of America (CFDA), and Professor Hazel Clark, Research Chair of Fashion at Parsons (www.newschool.edu/parsons), marking 40 years of the wrap dress and discussing the ways in which American fashion design has changed since 1974 as well as the past and future of this singular look.
In 1974 Diane Von Furstenberg introduced a modern design classic into the American consciousness: the wrap dress. The garment defined the 1970s and outfitted a generation of women seeking (and achieving) professional, personal, and sexual independence.

    >;~D I still have one of my original DVF wrap dresses and wear it at least twice a year, Mother's Day Brunch being one of those occasions. It's just as "fresh" and relevant today as it was back then. Cannot thank Mme Diane enough!!!

Thank you Diane for inventing the wrap dress. You especially look good in it at 20:23 23:05 and 1:00:05.

The wrap dress was invented by Elsa Schiaparelli, not Furstenberg.

DVF doesn't say she invented the wrap dress - it's a concept that's been around for centuries ie. the kimono. DVF was the first to do the wrap dress in those particular patterns/cuts and jersey fabrics, which was revolutionary. It's around the 23min mark.
