People have always been disgusting, yet it seems to be getting worse, despite all of the advancements we’ve made in regards to hygiene and medicine. The public is so downright grotesque these days that I don’t even know what to say. Sometimes I wonder if I genuinely have contamination OCD or if “contamination OCD” is just a term made up for people that are aware of their surroundings. Similar to how we used to call women with opinions or emotions “hysterical” or “having the vapors”.

I was a store manager for a large grocery store chain. You also need to worry about what you don't see. Every store is different but people are not clean in general. Meat, deli, bakery and produce departments have many issues. Dirty working surfaces, equipment not cleaned properly. I caught a deli worker coming out of the bathroom with their gloves still on. Employees eating when preparing food. Not washing fruits and vegetables before cutting for the prepacks. Not washing the knives and talking over the food where a partical can spray out of their mouth. Deli workers will mix the out of date potato salad in with new. Never trust anyone with your food.

@monteniajackson1467 Try eating out in Korea (where l live); and China. In recent years, they just started drying the silverware. When l mentioned dry silverware to some Koreans, they were repulsed. And we often eat out of the same bowl. When l first came, people were drying their hands on a shared public towel. In China, they'd wash their hands in a shared basin of standing water, with a shared soap bar 🧼, and towel. When l spoke to them about it, they said, "We change it 2wice a day". Me trying to educate those wonderful Chinese people on hygiene, or the gross lack thereof, was like a _faux pas_ ; seriously stepping on toes. But things have improved.

My husband one time asked the deli people to slice bologna that we were buying by the pound. He seen the man just slice raw meat on the same machine he sliced our bologna on. He never cleaned the bloody meat juices off. Then he proceeded to slice our bologna. I asked my husband for bologna he told me what happened. A month later from that store I bought eggs and milk and within two or three days they went rotten. I could not believe the horrific smell of the eggs. Let's just say I never went shopping there again.

I was shopping in a Walmart in Pennsylvania. I observed a woman take a bottled beverage off-the-shelf, open it, take a sip, put the cap back on and put it back on the shelf. I told the woman she shouldn't do that because someone else might buy that and she's already drank from the bottle. She was huffy with me and thought I should mind my own business. I just kept walking. But I did report it to a store associate who said "people do that kind of thing all the time"! Some people eat food, without paying, right out of packages and leave the wrappers on the shelves! People are inconsiderate oink oinks sometimes. Sorry to say it, but after you see something like that in a store, it turns your stomach.

My first job as a teenager (1972 in NJ) was in a hospital kitchen. Everything was spotless. We delivered supper trays to patients and one night a week I worked in the staff cafeteria. Again, everything was spotless. My next job was in a fast food restaurant. Again, we had to keep it spotless. Strict rules, even to how often the floors were to be mopped. Strict food storage rules. We all had to take several hours' worth of a Board of Health Food Service & Sanitation course (I still have the card). Keep in mind that back then a lot of places didn't have backup generators so placement on shelves was important (never store meat over anything else, etc.). Whenever we had any time we weren't cooking or serving customers, we were cleaning!
I worked for an ophthalmologist/surgery center and worked with med/surg supplies, even scrubbing in to assist.
For decades I worked in an office in hospitals. NJ, then FL. Later, closer to retirement in FL, I worked in a supermarket (large chain), a retail outlet, and cleaned vacant rentals.
The supermarket is quite clean. I did custodial shift at night for months. The outlet store... let's just say their custodianaintenance men never did a proper clean. The managers would often have me do custodial work and wonder why it took me so long. Nothing like seeing white textured plastic walls where under the air hand dryer there were cascades of *brown* where people just rinsed their filthy hands and blew them dry. Cleaning those walls and the floors were time consuming. They couldn't understand why I was always cleaning the fitting rooms and the countertops.
In the supermarket I was constantly cleaning between customers. People have no idea just how dirty the conveyor belts can be at the registers! They all probably thought I had OCD. No, they only required management and certain staff to take the FL food service course. I wasn't required to, but told them about the strictness of the NJ course.
OK, that's it for this time. Thank you!

I have seen conveyor belts with wet & dried blood from leaking packages of meat! That's why I always line the shopping cart with the store sales paper, and because people also place their pets in the carts as well. I have pets but to me those carts are too nasty for them.
I also place my food items in plastic bags while shopping. Once I am home everything is either wiped off with disinfectant wipes or sprayed with bleach water and rinsed. My fruits and vegetables are cleaned with diluted vinegar water.

"Someone picked their butt before going into the grocery store, picked up an orange decided they didn't want it, sat it down then you came along picked up the same orange decided you didn't want it then you rubbed your eyes." From that day forward, which was 40 years ago, I stopped touching gas station pump handles and door knobs, and my list has gotten much longer. When I arrive home with my groceries, I take several damp cloths with Lysol Disinfectant and everything is wiped down before putting away in my pantry or refrigerator. Special attention to bread wrappers. Fresh fruit and veggies are transferred to my containers unless the container that they are in can be wiped down. Eggs to my containers. Items in cardboard boxes like cereal and pasta are also wiped down and set aside to dry.
Then I wipe off my shopping bags and set off to dry.

Then she used her hand as a "colander" and tipped the plate back into the bowl of pears, draining off all the juice. 😮

I also grab extra veggie/fruit plastic bags to place the meat & seafood in when storing them in the fridge. It helps protect the fridge from leaks and possible cross-contamination. After I clean & season the meat I place the empty meat trays in the same bags, spray a bleach water mixture in the bags to prevent it from smelling, tie it, and throw in the garbage. I do the same thing for onions & lettuce to reduce the smell in the kitchen garbage. It also limits dumping the trash to 1x per week!

You really would not believe the level of nastiness of random strangers--people coughing into their hands before grabbing bags of chips off the chip shelf, people biting their fingernails and then handing me their credit cards, the sheer number of men who would go to the restroom and come back a few moments later. With totally dry hands. The women with acrylic nails with little gemstones and charms, that had gunk all in them...and they would all be grabbing the coffee stirrers, the creamers, putting their fingers into the napkin dispensers to take more napkins...(we never cleaned those, btw. Restaurant napkin dispensers are sometimes really gross too...don't touch the dispensers when you get napkins...)

I will put a fresh plastic bag down and strap in my purse and never put anything into the cart that isn't bagged. Fifty years ago there was a wonderful small grocery chain that would weekly steam clean their carts because my family doctor recommended they protect their customers from an outbreak of meningitis. Grocery stores that allow pets are a major no-no. I was in an Aldi and watched a woman with a non-service dog standing next to packages of strawberries. The dog was licking the tops of the berries. Anyone who buys those will have no idea of the bacteria that has been introduced to that food. Further, people who have allergies to dogs/cats could become severely ill if coming into contact with the saliva, hair or dander. People with pets don't consider those consequences of bringing their "family members" along to a place where they can cause harm and where they don't belong.

Ms. Pam, I worked as a food inspector for a number of years and I totally agree with you. Thank you for raising awareness to these areas. Not only are the dirty food-contact surfaces (what the bread was directly touching) and non-food-contact areas, like the dirty door tracks, something to consider for food safety, you also need to be aware of the risks of allergen cross-contamination and food defense issues, like intentional tampering with the food. Any self-serve areas are a big nope for me- salad bar, soup, olive bar, donuts, etc. Same for restaurant buffets. The stores are inspected in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations, and it's amazing what they allow before being able to mandate remediation. For example, they're allowed a few dead flies in the chest freezer and blood on the meat shelf because the meat is wrapped (non-food-contact surface). Honestly, one of the first places I look before I grocery shop or eat somewhere is the bathroom. If they don't have soap and paper towels, you KNOW they aren't washing their hands.

It would be great if you could do a show on putting children in grocery carts where the food goes.
I had a neighbor boy who used to work in a grocery store. He saw many gross things, from dirty shoes to overflowing diapers in the carts.
    Love all of your shows!

I stopped at a certain gas/convenience store that is popular in our area. I was craving one of their delicious chocolate chip cookies, so I went to the glass case that housed the freshly baked goods. There was a big ol’ fly buzzing around behind the glass, resting on the donuts, muffins, etc. Yuck 🤢 I told the clerk and he just stared at me wide-eyed.

That first grocery store is beyond filthy! I wouldn’t go there if they were giving away groceries!

And this is just supermarkets. I think if we saw even a fraction of the state of most restaurant kitchens and how food is stored/cleaned/prepped, we would no longer eat out.

Oh Pam, you are a wicked one! Thanks for letting us see your concerns. Very valid, very eye opening. I'm rethinking open food bars, too.

Thanks Pam, great advice! Also ! I have always stayed away from the deli case, you don't know how long that food has been in there and the sloppy salads and other stuff just get scraped and put on top of the newer stuff! Ooh my! Love your videos and your lovely personality, sweet and chèerful🎉Best wishes for the new year!

There's a great, immensely clean grocery store chain in New Jersey called Shop Rite, there's always employees in each section cleaning/wiping everything up, I guess that people shopping there are more aware of their cleanliness and try to choose and pkg their choices neater than any other state and feel more secure to purchase open foodstuffs, olives, pre-made main dishes and sides, variety of salads, breads/rolls/bagels/bialys, etc. It was truly a beautiful thing to see and feel safer about my purchases 😊❤

Agreed!! I was just about to mention Shop Rite. Every Shop Rite I've been to here in North NJ, I always see employees cleaning. They also don't let dairy products sit outside, unlike Walmart & I've witnessed it several times. Target is a bit filthy too but not as bad as Walmart. Shop Rite will always be my top choice.
