That factoid about the seat safety switch not having to be connected saved me a bunch of head scratching on a Murray that I picked up. the seat switch was missing, and the wire was joined together, which grounded it. I had no fire until I saw your comment about that. I disconnected them, and prevented the side to the rest of the safety system wouldn't ground out. So thanks for that. I never knew about that. I've been messing with riders for a long time.
I bought this to use as my ignition switch on a 1963 Bolens 800 riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxaAnMgzTZ_djF6K1Kr3MGiW_XGUMfUP8n I repowered with a 13hp Predator engine. Worked great! On the back of this switch are 5 terminals labeled G, M, L, S, and B. The G was wired straight to ground, The S was wired from the back of the switch to my starter solenoid. The L is for any accessories, so I ran it from the L terminal to a rear light I have on the riding mower. M is for the coil, so I plugged the stock coil wire to this wire terminal. The B is for constant battery power, so this was wired to the positive battery cable. I turn the key, first click is the accessory position, and my rear light came on as expected. Turned the key all the way and Vroom...the engine started. Turn it back to the off position, and the engine turned off. Perfect! Hope this helps!
Thank you for the video, I am working on a similar Craftsman for a Lady and for some reason your video popped up. The Clutch Interlock switch is bad on Her Machine so all I have to do is a simple replacement. I think that you gave some very sound advice on not chopping wires. I am of the same opinion as you are on that. We don't have a real repair place here and after I built a Rat Tractor to run around town with people started to ask me about fixing their Machines. I have seen a bunch of Do it yourself Jobs with Hacked up wires and cobbled up things. By the way you have a Spiffy looking Gas pedal going on there. Anyway I did enjoy your video!!
Thanks my friend. I have a craftsman GT18 and I need to take all my safety switches out because when I put a jumpbox on the cables I can't even get the starter to turn. I do not see a seat safet and there is no seat . I bought the mower to turn into a mud mower only.
Way to go Young Man.........cutting wires is the worst kind of practice to ever do, only those who have issues, CUTS, CHOPS, AND TWEAKS OUT ON ELECTRICAL, LOL! Good Video, Thanks!
A seat safety? What's next an airbag? My old 1967 Cub Cadet 124 had none of that stuff. It had a factory cigarette lighter, and I added a 12 volt AM/FM cassette stereo. Not to mention I also added a beer cosy!
you probably dont give a shit but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last couple of days xD
thanks for the video, the funny thing is when I jumped the starter to get it to run the key switch was off it has to be a fuse or something safety switchy, the fuse does not look broken though,
I have a craftsman riding lawnmower. I cut one weekend and the next weekend I get on it and not even a click. I have put a new battery, solenoid, ignition switch and wiring harness. Still nothing. Fuse looks good but will change tomorrow. Any idea? Thanks
Trash barn on your clutch or on your mower engagement?? I kind of screwed up in this video, I recently on this particular tractor I remove the mower engagement, when I installed my Dixie Air Horns, I crossed my white to white black to black, it blew the main fuse I think there's a resistor in the actual switch, basically preventing people from doing this, so now I put the switch back in and zip-tied the button down, it works perfectly. I think on some trackers it will work the way I showed it but others it will not without rewiring which I don't do.
@ARednecksLife so I have this craftsman has a kohler motor on it too. same tractor more less. long story short...... someone strip every wire and safety. It has the four main wires red green white and purple/blue coming from motor that have been cut at the plug that would have connected the orange wire on other end like in video. How would one go about wiring your normal mower key switch? not the black one like stock, older silver type.. Know very little about wiring and even tho the tractor is 10-12 years old it's only been used for 2 or 3 since this happened. Hate to junk it. I would greatly appreciate the advice.
The yellow wire next to the fuel line, where does it go. I have one black and one yellow there. The black wire looked burnt and broke but the yellow wire seems like it came loose.
I have almost the same craftsman riding mower and I have been trying to find a wiring diagram. My problem is that I have a wire that I have to attach to my battery ground to start the mower and take it off after it starts. Then I have to reattach it to kill the engine. This mower has been to several small engine repair places and neither of them could get the wiring correct
I have a dyt 4000 with 18.5 Briggs. I can start it right up. The second I let out on the clutch, it dies. Start it back up, with pedal pushed in and pull the electric pto, it dies. I replaced the seat switch. Any thoughts on the issue?
Tim Bolton I had a similar issue on a tractor I just sold. I narrowed it down to the relay under the dash but it could also be a fault in one of the safety switches or the ignition switch.
ARednecksLife This is the one that's stumping me. lol. I ordered a new pto and clutch switch. It started out as stahling out when the clutch was let out. Even with disconnecting the kill on the coil, I was getting no spark. I replaced the coil, started right up. I mowed with it for 40 minutes, no problem what so ever. Went to move it and it dies again with the clutch. if I keep the clutch in and pull the pto switch, it dies as well. changed the seat switch and still have the same problem. I've put a light tester on the ignition switch and all seems well. I am noticing that when running with the clutch in, I only have power to one wire coming into the clutch switch. I'm stumped.
Had the same problem on my JD. There was a safety switch on top of the transaxle that was the problem. So I disabled both the seat and transaxle (neutral) safety switches on my JD. I just used trailer wiring clips that bridge 2 wires together. It worked great and was non-invasive, no wire cutting and easily removable. Now it starts and runs.
I have bypassed the seat safety switch years ago but a new problem has happened. The tractor was running just fine until I shut it off to take care of another issue, when I went to restart it starts and runs fine but when I let the clutch out or try to engage the blades the engine shuts down just like turning off the key. I can't believe that both the clutch switch and blade interlock could fail simultaneously. I'm lost
it would have helped me if you showed what exactly was hooked up to the solenoid. In what order and would it matter which wire goes from the starter and to battery or does it matter etc....I have gone to the wiring diagram in the manual but that really doesn't tell me a whole lot either. I know whatever my problem is has to do with wiring because I put a new battery, solenoid and starter on. Now when I attach battery everything starts smoking (starter and wires under battery hosing) and the battery terminals are flaming hot (this happens even before sticking the key in and trying to crank it. I'm def not a mechanic but i surely must be an idiot lol. Anyways any help would be appreciated. I am assuming something is grounded on the positive side that shouldn't be, to make all this happen.
Kim Pascal clutch’s go bad on these low gears go first end up just mowing highest gear until you don’t go strait up hills anymore you have to side hill it. Or fix it lol
I have the same mower I’m trying to put a Briggs Stratton vtwin motor on it it coming off a gas pedal poolan mower u thing the motor will fit and the wiring
Yes the engine should fit. You may get lucky and it's a plug-and-play. But When it comes to wiring as long as you don't put 12 volts to your coils you should be fine, just figure out what is your kill wire, what is your charging wire, if you have a carb solenoid and you plan on using it what is the constant key on feed if you have one.
What do I do when the engine turns over fine but has no spark even with the kill wires disconnected from the coils. Briggs & Stratton 18 HP INTEK TWIN.
Rusty Nuckles Most likely a bad coil, but since it's a twin they sometimes have a resistor between the two coils so try unplugging both coils and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply! I did try with the kill wire completely removed, no spark, turns over fine, you can even feel the little motor in the carb. running. I was trying to start the mower with a low battery so I put a charger on it on the start mode and when I turned the key off I saw a little smoke trickle out from under the flywheel cover, that was the resistors in the kill switch burning up. That was the last time I had any spark. Both coils test at 4.5 ohms @ 20k on the meter. I've never seen anything to beat this one !
I put a good battery in it and turned it over with and without the kill wire installed, no difference. Coils are gapped with a business card. All 3 switches seem to be operating correctly even though I was originally checking why when the blade was fully engaged the engine would shut off. I pulled the blade switch ( after no spark ) with the plunger in the out position I get continuity that quits beeping when the plunger is depressed on the left side of the switch that controls the blade actuation (yellow & yellow with black tracer) I get opposite results on the other two spades which control the starting function ( orange with black tracer ^ 2 orange with white tracers) I put a jumper to the orange wires, engine turns over, no spark. engine will not turn over with that switch removed.
Rusty Nuckles if you have the kill wires disconnected you should get spark, but from the sounds of it you might have fried the coils somehow unfortunately.
@@redneckbryon yea I just got to run a togolese switch and hot and ground wire to my clutch one of my safety switches is shutting down the engine when I pull the engagement switch not sure witch one it is a lot simpler to by pass but you've got to use at least 12 gage wire doing so the eltric clutch pulls a lot of amps so it takes heavy wire to do this with a heavy toggle switch
you can get a free wiring diagram on you craftsman mower bring up sears mower parts type in model # ( look under the seat go thry list of parts look for wireing dia . you can print this and save it ou can trace wire easy color coded if you want knw age of a mower look at 5th nd 6 didgits in model 3 date of manuf.

Thanks vidio rialy helped me with puting a wireing harness fron a lt 1000 on a 1987 to 1990 ford lt 12h
Good tips on the " Safety Switches "!!!

What causes engine to die when you pull the pro clutch engagement switch to mow
i have a yellow wire that runs to relay on one end and the other side is just hanging any guess on if it a +12 or neg wire

finily found some one agrees with me on cutting wires thks
do you know where the fuses are located in the gt5000 I blew a fuse on mine
On the seat safety all I did was put a shim of wood in between the seat and the metal plate
Work like a charm no cutting wires.
2 seconds and dune
robert jahrling Zip-tie works as well.
I have that same mower and cannot remove the brake switch. The Parking brake rod is in the way. What do I do?

learning about is so much greater
what if the short burns up the colors of the wire? may i ask
clyde coffey I would guess retrac the wires
the wires wer directly connected to the coil wires
clyde coffey they would have been connected to the kill side of the coil so if the switch gets triggered it shut off the engine
i understand flybacki in tranisformer the thing why and make peple think
put on youtube and how they know or do not know
The only thing good about the these Craftsmens are the engines.
the tractor itself is made out of plastic and bubblegum.
I think every body has wiring problems on these
