    The Greatest is not only about the end of a relationship. The loss she's referring to has a rather existential aspect to it -- she's experiencing burnout and feels exhausted by the status quo, all that's currently happening in the world. It's quite a dark song where we see Lana at her breaking point ("If this is it, I'm signing off"). What is interesting about this song is how paradoxical to some extent the instrumental is, it feels almost triumphant (to me at, least).

    cars mean a lot in lana's world. she said they symbolize her fast paced life and the momentum of it. so when in love song she sings 'spill my clothes on the floor of your new car' she just means she'd show all her vulnerability while she's a part that person's life

    The "candle in the wind" line is also a reference to the Elton John song, and the "I'm your man" line is a reference to Leonard Cohen. she loves to name drop her musical forebearers in her songs; even in titles like "Cinnamon Girl" harkening back to Neil Young. I also hope you caught the Robert Frost reference! she's great at working western literary canon into her music

    • @jspettifer
      @jspettifer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      But explicitly the Candle in the Wind refers Marilyn and her depression leading to her suicide.
      There were articles and interviews early in her career focusing on some of her songs and comments suggesting that she would be likely to follow some other troubled artists.

    • @FractalRabbit
      @FractalRabbit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know I'm late to the party, but I always thought that "I'm your man" was reference to Cher and the interview where she told how her mom once told her to get a rich man. Cher's respond being that she earns enough to support her and her possible partner, and not needing anyone to support her.

    Lana's music just transcends to another plane and she pulls you with her when you listen to her songs. NFR is my personal favorite though I feel like you gotta do Ultraviolence the album. Hearing you poetic perspective just added another layer of insight to these songs I've listen to so many times. I had somethings I've noticed, but your attention certain lines and the literary devices Lana uses which you explain has provided me with the reason why those lines hit me hard; its the repition, the rhymes, the precise syllables used in each line, imagery, tone in the written word as well as her vocal tone all crest this cohesive synergy that just simply put makes me feel. Thank you for your analysis.

    i had no idea you didn’t listen to all of this yet! it was a gem from last year, but i hope the wait was worth it. and i gotta say i loved each of your reactions - how you loved Venice Bitch throughout (this is my favorite of hers) and skipped Doin’ Time (as you should 😳) - and the explanation of some of her songwriting. i don’t know if that’s going to be a thing in your channel, but i’d love it if it were, it really helps me as a freshman in Linguistics. regardless, this album is beautifully vintage for sure, i can’t listen to it without a poetic license because it speaks volumes when it comes to the lyrics. but the best thing is that the production lives up to it and makes the songs way more vivid. and at each video you get prettier (felt like i should mention)!! i can’t wait to see more of your reactions and hope you’re safe and well 🤗

It's been almost 2 years since Lana released it and I can't stop to listening to it. It's like a drug. I need it once in a while to let my feelings out and heal me. Only NFR can do that. grab my waist, don't waste any part
    I believe that you see me for who I am so spill my clothes on the floor of your new car") but i can also see that sense of longingness when she says "be my once in a lifetime"

    for me, california has a special spot in my heart. not only is this such a hauntingly beautiful song but there’s a specific lyric that always gets to me and does to any lana fan that’s been around since her song ride was released. in the song ride, there’s a lyric that goes “i’ve got a war in my mind”. this lyric was something i could relate to as it symbolizes depression and how it can make you feel like you have a war on your mind. throughout the years, i’ve reached a level of mental stability in which i could no longer relate to that lyric in ride. so, to my surprise, when i heard the lyric in california, “i’ve heard the war is over if you really choose”, i was moved. i finally healed and so did lana. it was like we both grew and chose to free ourselves from this war in our mind.

    Her albums are definitely her works of art- but for individual songs you should probably check out her latest single and Looking for America since they sound the most like this.
    I think the Ride music video would be a good way to understand earlier Lana. The fans love referring to it because you can see her growth towards happiness since then perfectly summed up in how she wishes to be a poet in the monologue - which obviously she achieved, it’s really beautiful how much she has been able to express her happiness in her poetry since she was always so attached to her feelings of frustration and experiences with violence before.

    46:49 My take on this is that I don't necessarily think she's staying with him because she's an empath, I think she's staying because she doesn't value herself enough to leave the relationship. this album and Ultraviolence were allegedly about the same man (her ex boyfriend c. 2014), and on Ultraviolence she was singing from the perspective of someone who endures the draining relationship (he hit me and it felt like a kiss) because she has a distorted sense of self-worth and what love really is. to her, this man-child is the most beautiful thing in the world (despite him being not-shit) because her perception of love is misconstrued. and when she closes the record (hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have-but I have it) I think that is her finally revealing that she's realising who she is and what she is worth and she has hope for what her future holds for her.
    Idk maybe im reaching but both Lana and I have similar experiences with the narrative of her album Ultraviolence and NFR! so I interpret these lyrics like that.

      I actually agree with a lot of your interpretation and relate to the album for that reason. I cut the part when I said I don’t view being an empath as a positive quality. The definition of empath is someone who feels other emotions/ often senses and takes on the pain of others. I used to glorify being an empath but now I see it as a neutral trait. You still have to find boundaries and self love. I definitely think an empath could stay with a toxic person because they feel their inner emotions and view them as someone they could save. I’ve had to learn to redirect my empath energy towards myself and find healthier outlets for it. Thanks for sharing this perspective!
      I definitely will have to check out ultraviolence down the line!

    I LOVE YOUR INTELLECTUAL BREAKDOWN!!! Yessss!!! I often find Lana’s deeply layered metaphorical lyrics are a feeling, not even something to be interpreted into words. It’s like if you know, you know… you know? Lol but this album was very direct in her lyrics and I really enjoyed that as well. It was very easy listening. And that Venice bitch instrumental bridge was just as much as a star. She really showcases her bands that she works with. Love song also my fav. And I also feel sadness/longing and wanting to hold to whatever can latch on to him. I take that back tho … cinnamon girl is my fav on here lol that outro 😻

    the t-t in bartender was an onomatopoeia of a toast and the life on mars mention was because life on mars is a song about a girl who uses movies, tv and fiction as a form of escapism because her reality is too cruel

    Love your reactions, i think it’s good how you help some listeners deepen the surface of lyrics to access the poetics. so everything is great overall. now that ive said that, i was looking forward to listen to your thoughts about one of my personal favorites (and IMO one of her truest verses) lyrics in this album, in How to disappear
    “I watched the guys getting high as they fight for the things that they hold dear, to forget the things they fear”. That line always gets me.
    Love ! Xoxo

    A lot of people listen to The Next Best American Record and say it’s good but they need to listen to it a few more times or say it’s not that good. It IS good, it just obviously doesn’t fit onto the album, but you know if it was on LFL like it was supposed to be, they would’ve liked it

    Hi Sher!! Amazing video!! In terms of Lana's work - pretty much the album reviews be a great point to start. If looking for specific songs, I think you'd like the following ones -
    Born to die: Dark paradise and radio
    Ultraviolence: West coast
    Honeymoon: Salvatore
    Lust for Life: Love, Cherry; 13 beaches; Tomorrow never Came
    Other: Young and beautiful
