I was 11 years old and I randomly found a book called the world of the Buddha, laying on a desert wash under a road in Arizona. The next book I bought after I read, it was Alan Watts The Way of Zen. Still listening at 64.

Alan is one of those figures who draws ire frequently but in unfocused and sensitive ways. It's not always so cut and dry though. I remember being resistant to some of his ideas when I first stumbled across him a few years ago. I found his tone to be smug or self-assured, and the idea of 'overthinking' to be ridiculous, especially in a world where many problems are caused by a complete absent of focused thought. But ultimately what I resisted the most was what I didn't understand. But now that I do, his words bring a great comfort and relief. Not in a coping mechanism that dismisses the problem, but one that introduces you to pieces you were missing, or connecting two bits that you couldn't see yourself. Life is alike to that practice of walking across hot coals; some may tell you that the act of participating is pointless, stupid, painful, and those participating should be ridiculed. Others will teach you how to get others to walk across it for you, or how to cast blame when you stumble. Alan feels like a voice that spent most of his time thinking about the nature of the situation itself, and translates point blank where you are within it. It reminds me of the Bukowski title 'What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.' The quantity and quality of the burns, as well as the temperature of the fire are irrelevant, so long as your investment comes from that actual interaction and control of self you can experience.
I'm so grateful for anyone bold enough to think in the public eye. They've helped me escape a life shackled by self-contained narratives and indifference to the world around me.

It should really be hammered in, that these ideas only be used to better understand oneself. Otherwise by clarifying problems with the world - especially when they're so spot on - that can really send one into a deep depression. Because no matter how right it is, it won't change anyone else. And the more right it is, the harder it will be to accept that it can't be changed.
That can lead one down the path of Sauron and Morgoth, wanting to change what can't be changed.
And the more one heads into the light, the darker things that aren't start to look and feel. Which can have the opposite effect of creating a very dismal experience!
    Just a friendly reminder.

I often contemplate life as if it were a book with character relationship. Mostly due to the surreal experience being of a majority, along with coincidence beyond normal standards of rationalization, more in the sense of what, Jung, called synchronicity. But , as far as, if it were a book, I could not put the story together better, or embellish an extreme, past its present

Alan never claimed to be the Messiah or to have all the answers, he said in many of his talks that what he says shouldn't be taken seriously or literally, he was an entertainer. Yet still to this day people have this weird connotation that he thought he was God or something like that, people seem offended just by his existence.
