Alan Watts: A Journey Through Eastern and Western Zen (1-3)
This video has three separate talks put together. I've inserted a titles into the video when the talks change so you can know what talk it is. This is parts 1-3 of Eastern & Western Zen.
1. Introduction to Zen:
Introduction to Zen is a captivating exploration of Zen Buddhism and its principles. In this talk, he delves into the nature of reality, the concept of the self, and the importance of living in the present moment. Watts often emphasizes the idea of experiencing life directly rather than getting caught up in intellectual analysis. He uses engaging anecdotes and philosophical insights to illustrate how Zen encourages a deeper understanding of existence and a more profound connection to the world around us. His charismatic delivery makes complex ideas accessible and thought-provoking, inviting listeners to reflect on their own perceptions and experiences.
2. Early Chinese Zen:
Alan Watts' talk on early Chinese Zen, he explores the origins and development of Zen Buddhism as it emerged in China. He discusses the fusion of Buddhist teachings with Taoist philosophy, highlighting how this blend shaped the unique characteristics of Zen. Watts delves into key concepts such as spontaneity, the nature of enlightenment, and the significance of direct experience over theoretical knowledge. He often uses vivid imagery and anecdotes to illustrate these ideas, making them relatable and engaging for listeners. Throughout the talk, Watts encourages a deeper understanding of the Zen approach to life, emphasizing the importance of being present and embracing the moment.
3. Uncarved Block:
In this thought-provoking talk, Alan Watts explores the concept of the Uncarved Block, a powerful metaphor rooted in Taoist philosophy. Watts illustrates how this idea represents the natural state of being-pure, unrefined, and full of potential. He discusses the importance of embracing simplicity and authenticity in a world that often values complexity and conformity.

Id ask what am I, am i what i think myself to be, or am I what others think me to be, and what is the higher conscious meaning of that implication.

Utterly brilliant and delightful. Thank you, Alan Watts. You tell the truth with a beautiful voice.
Prescient.
Thank you for watching! For this video I combined the first three parts of Eastern & Western Zen, two of the talks are short. I'm just giving this a try for the shorter talks, instead of making three separate videos. Let me know how you like it. 🙂

He said we have to kill to live, but there are plants where you cam harvest and it will grow back again. Like spinach can be harvested, and then new leaves will grow within weeks. Killing is a choice

So I’m going to be that guy. Could you set one with chillstep or anything that breaks up each koan and thought/ commentary? This is my favorite talk and can lead to enlightenment in itself. Breaking up each topic allows the “self” the “time” to contemplate between them. There is so much to understand in each. If not, no worries. Thanks for ALL the videos. 😊

Alan watts was a great phylosopher but also a science illiterate. Michaelson Moley never did an experiment in his entire life, he falsify the results. You can't execute the scientific method without manipulating the independent variable
@@Trustee-of-The-Most-High Alan said many times not to take him literally or seriously. He was an entertainer and definitely not a scientist. With around 400 talks he likely said somethings that weren't 100% accurate. He never claimed to know everything or have all of the answers. 🙂
@@TheMysticalCompass ignoring sometinh is one thing, claiming lies to be true is not your argument. Lets just say that all men must have a little bit of darkness in them as alan used to say
