Can we talk about how good Shaun is as a host so many other podcast hosts keep filling the podcast up with there own shit but Shaun let's the people talk and keeps things on track
@david white Yah Shaun and his bang up crew are a real fine art in the midst of making one the most outside of the box entertaining shows on Earth. Dynamo dynamics. Shaun you sharp cat, the world is in the palm of your hands congratulations man.
Shaun's right about this guys message - there's always a positive to be drawn out of the worst things that happen to us, given enough time you'll find that positive and use it to drive you.
I first went to Nepal in 2000 and as Piers said there were posters in guest houses asking if u wouldn’t mind visiting a foreign prisoner - so I went to visit prison in Kathmandu - i was happy to meet anyone, turns out there were no Native English speaking inmates in that prison. So I met with a Dutch hash smuggler , i brought him cigarettes and a book , he seemed remarkably chipper and said he didn’t really need any other help - the prison was just as Piers describes, open courtyard & dilapidated, he asked me about myself & my head dropped as i became introspective and told him that i was an English teacher in Hong Kong and he actually started giving me a really great pep talk , telling me things will get better for you - I wasn’t expecting that hahaha ! It was quite an experience- i walked back into Kathmandu in the rain in the afternoon and got drunk - soon after the crown prince shot dead the royal family.... I’m still an English teacher in Hong Kong & I still love Nepal
i did the gold run from Hong Kong to Kathmandu back in 1984......then the ones with paid off guards were not on the gold run but on the milk run at Taipei.....the milk run used to go from Hong Kong with electronics to Taipei, then the next day with bananas and womens clothes to Seoul and the next day with womens cosmetics to Tokyo..........however that run did not pay too well even when scoring all of the bonuses for clearing all of the stops..............the most dangerous runs were in to Tokyo and Seoul with either weed or speed........people who spent a spell in Korean and Japanese prisons were never the same again after.....the thing is that neither Japanese or Korean police or prison guards have a sense of humor........i was about to do the gold run again as things had worked so well but they night before i was set to go a traveler came back from Kathmandu telling of everyone getting busted at Kathmandu airport and locked up.........i still had a visa for China but it had one day remaining on it and further busts came that night at Kathmandu so i scooted off to China, extended my visa and traveled across south China . when i returned three weeks later the busts had continued and the runs were getting more elaborate...........i hid for the winter in the Philippines and then headed to Japan for the start of the teaching season in April, worked a season then returned to India by October with a thick wad of Yen where i spent a lazy winter.
@B.D W i don't know how to set up podcast, i am from a time before internet and it is as much as i can do to use facebook and youtube......if you can tell me how to do podcast i am sure i can work it out but it will no doubt take some explaining.
@B.D W i would like to do an episode with Shaun, he is like the type who i would hang out with during the 90s.........it is weird that one of his type got busted in the south west of USA where i was hanging out.....i was hanging out with Chicanos as well......i was getting my fun south of the border where things were safer in that regard or maybe it was that i moved so fast that they could not keep up with me.........i remember at around that time going so fast that i was having a trouble keeping up with myself.
yip I remember back in the day walking through hong kong airport with a shit load of sherbet, and i'm not talking about the usual shit you hear about, this was pure as fuck shit with dib dabs, some serious motherfucking ching, that would have bought me serious time. I was shitting it. Luckily the airport security was crap, no dogs, no pat down, walked straight through customs and I can tell you I felt fucking amazing afterwards. I should have left it at that but it was such a buzz I went onto some more serious shit . popping candy, I done 2 runs of it to Thailand and was caught with a key. Facing the death penalty. If it wasn't for my cousins friends aunties brother I wouldn't be here. He liaised with Thai authorities and luckily for me he was such a good lay they pardoned me
when i eventually returned to Nepal i went and visited friends who had been caught and locked up in Dilli Bazaar prison.....i was vegetarian at the time so i used to go to the market and pick up food for them....on Christmas day i got them the kit to make pizza. there were a few of them from the gold run who had got 4 years each.
I could listen to Piers all day. He's incredibly well spoken and didn't skimp out on any details. The podcasts are getting better and better Shaun. Looking forward to the next one.
Another my quote for everyone: it's better to comprehend than to understand in some and certain things. Previous for everyone was: the best thing you can do to the past is to learn from it, from own and others. I would be honored if you, Shaun or anyone would use at least either one of these in your speeches. Have a nice day!
It's bizarre how on every video there is something that the audience finds uniformly distracting... i.e. Piers' belly, The Baldness of other guests etc. I wonder how many people actually watch the vid and listen to the story xD
Ah, now I remember Piers appearing on a late-night talk-show on Talk Radio UK (Creatures of the Night) back in the 90s! I didn't realise who he was, he was just part of a roster of characters who used to appear. Man, I used to love that show!!
This guy had high up connections. His uncles father was a knight of the British order. Then the king of Nepal granted them clemency after only 8 months.
I am from Kathmandu , moved to Canada recently , whatever this guys said about Nepalese people and their way of doing things ha is correct . As a white guy or girl, you used to be and are usually safe in Nepal unless you do something very stupid . We generally tend to treat foreigners (especially the people from west ) very well and make them feel at home .
Shaun , Piers, i picked Gold Smuggler as my intro to True Crime: I dig it, half way through now, & cant set it down.... Like a book in the olden days , A 😊 cheers
Great stuff, enjoy the podcasts found it hilarious at around 40 minuets when he talks about potential promiscuous encounters in the prison and says he didn't with any females and then subject changes and explains how one guy did give him .... a cigarette packet, can see shaun thinking where is he going with this hahaha

four towers in Chungking mansions and it is still there.....still the most dodgy venue on Kowloon and there is still the travelers hostel at 16th floor of A block but Nanak Mess of 12th floor of A block has gone......sad as it was the best Indian in Hong Kong.
chungking mansions are still there, was there not long back :) I've put them in my indie game actually, as well as the Mirador mansion :) They're really amazing places to walk around eh :)
So was it explained why the Nepalese gangsters sacrificed ‘their’ gold to be seized only to receive a reward which is 25% of the value of the total sum of gold? If it’s their gold then why let it get seized to get a cash reward? Certainly having a ton of gold bars is a far better financial situation because that wasn’t explained in the episode.
Hey Shaun, one thing I've noticed with a lot of your guests is that many of them have some sort of stutter in their speech. Do you think they all have it due to the physiological trauma, stress or emotional trauma that they've endured while incarcerated?
Lee Mack has let himself go.
Haha , I was thinking the same.... I was quite disappointed when he spoke , an had a different voice to Lee Mack
this explains why I was having Lee Mack flashbacks when I watched this
😂 😂 😂 😂
He looks like he would eat Lee Mack for brekkie though!
Was just thinking of his name hahaha
