I'm a new viewer. I am a Mechanical Engineering Manager and worked in a failure analysis lab for many years early in my career. I have watched several of Nick's videos on motor failures. What I like about Nick is that he is very methodical in his analysis. When he has a failure, he is like a doctor, he asks many questions before he makes his diagnosis. All the young guns out there should learn this technique. I would love to have had people like Nick working for me. It has been my experience, in some cases, common sense and methodical thinking were more valuable than a college degree. I am so glad I found this channel. Thanks for teaching the young people what took us many years to learn.

Ya just gotta love the old time nature of Nick's shop allowing the owner to actually be in the bays watching the tear down. Most of today's "service" centers won't even allow you to look through the windows outside. 'Give us the keys and we'll call you when it's ready". "Liability" don't ya know. At 74 years old and a retired general machinist gear jammer - I'd almost hang out there and beg to wrench, lathe, mill or whatever for free. Nick's place is one of the last throw-back shops that still understands the connection owners have with their favourite iron.

Nick, this reminds me of a story..Back in 1970 I was working at a Chrysler dealership in N.J. The service writer had ordered a new Hemi Cuda. When it was delivered at around 6pm he signed for the car,the driver left, and the he started the engine and put a brick on the gas pedal to blow the motor. In those Chrysler had 5 year or 50 thousand mile warranty and he wanted a new crate engine because he was building a car for racing. He got his motor and was running in super stock d automatic. Crazy days but fun. Thanks . Mike

Nick a friend bought a new 1971 Mach 1 with a 351 4V and dropped a valve . Ford didn't have a replacement cylinder head but they gave him a piston .The intake valve was stuck in the head .That guy welded up the head and drove it until they had a replacement head . He could do things that nobody I ever saw could do .

I recently pulled apart a Jeep 4.0 that the piston for cylinder 6 was in many pieces in the bottom of the pan. The exhaust valve hit the piston and it crumbled. The connecting rod was slightly bent down the beam and the big end was narrowed a little. It was a mess. The only real salvageable parts were the head, crankshaft and 5 connecting rods.

Some 45 years ago I was racing a 67 Camero with a 327 in it. I was going against a hot AMX.
We were going to town down the strip.
I saw him starting to pull ahead and I stomped the pedal to the floor and gave her fuel. What happened next scared the crap out of me. I had never blown an engine before. One moment your flying and the motor is screaming.
Then, a Big bang and there is stuff flying everywhere. The noise was terrible.
When motor parts blew through the hood leaving a big hole I was stunned.
    One second your grabbing gears.
    Then Blam!

I did similar damage to a 351 Cleveland back in the 90's. Soft valve springs and a few too many revs saw a valve let go and it copped a series of smacks from the piston.
Snapped the valve stem into 3 bits, wedged the valve sideways into the head. One piece of valve stem went into the exhaust and another tried to make a second spark plug hole.
It didn't smash through the piston, but it cracked it along the crown and down around the ring lands, bent the connecting rod and put a few nice cracks in the bore. Had to sleeve that.
It was a costly lesson on a recently bought car that supposedly had a stout motor.

My dad, a child of the Great Depression, would look at that head with the valve jammed in it and he'd say "let's try to fix it, it doesn't look too bad." He'd weld the valve head back onto the stem, then he'd grab some grinding compound and his little hand-cranked suction cup grinder. I remember turning the handle and it goes clack clack clack clack clack. Looks like he'd be cranking a few weeks on this one.

nah that casting is toast. look behind the sideways valve- you can see large cracks in the top of the port around the valve guide, the valve head wedged against the valve stem and was beaten sideways into the valve, breaking the valve guide out of its hole. that head is done even at a good machine shop.

    • @donellmuniz590
      @donellmuniz590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jeffleblanc8850 Yes, there is no reason to over-rev them like that, even with a big cam and a lot of compression, an iron-headed 440 will make peak torque around 3900 rpm, and peak hp by 5800, no higher, the heads won't support it. I learned from drag racing 25 years ago, over-revving a big block before shifting makes you slower, and can float stock 6 pack springs, which mine had.

You just have to love those Mopar's. Back in the late 60's i ran a 426 Max Wedge in a 62 Dodge. In it's day it was a bad car and hard to beat. He got lucky. It looks like it can be saved.

    this is so awesome!
A real street 500hp 550tq, heavy breathin charger, it was give er hell, no guts , no glory, floatin the valves with 5 years of it, snappin driveshafts, broke valve, punched piston, cracked head ... time for a rev limiter. it may help to try and find a lighter valve and spring maybe a high grade material conical spring? Of course it could have gotten heat on the valve tube inside the head. This thing would also be awesome with aluminum heads man it could make a few more numbers with the same cam compression and intake combo. This is so Omazing! its so exciting you guys are so awesome.

I love the Arizona flag in your shop. Good to see us Desert Rats are represented!
That looks a lot like the 340 I bought years ago. But the cylinder on that block was obliterated. Nothing but gravel in the oil pan! The cause on that one was the guy who owned it revved it too high. The valves floated and one of the multi groove valve keepers came out, dropping the valve. The piston then came up and hit it and the mother was toast! The lesson there was never, ever use multi grooved keepers! I won't even use them on a street engine.

Wow he even cracked the head around the valve guide. The worst blown up engine I ever seen was in 1970 when I was working at a Chrysler Plymouth Imperial dealer. They towed a Roadrunner in that had grenaded the engine. As I recall the story was that the owner was drag racing and when he was shifting from 3rd to 4th he somehow shifted it back into second gear. When he let the clutch back out the engine exploded. The first thing we noticed were little dents in the hood coming from the inside. There were holes in the valve covers where the pushrods came out, that's where the dents in the hood came from. One connecting rod had broken and the piston was sideways in the cylinder, the wrist pin was laying in the cam galley and the camshaft was broken into several pieces. The block and oil pan had a hole in them so big that you could stick your arm all the way through the engine. The intake was even cracked from all the pieces hitting it. The only good parts on the engine was the water pump and housing.

I had a '66 & a '67 Charger back in the early '70's! The '66 was a 318 automatic & the '67 was a 383 4 speed. The '67 was hit pretty hard in the rear, I bought it to swap the drive train to the '66 & for parts.
The best thing was they were both red, so I did the plate swap when I got tired of shifting on the '67 so I could relax in the '66!
I sold my brand new 1970 'Cuda to buy the Charger.
It seemed like a good idea at the time... I miss my Charger more.

Reminds me of a 440 I got cheap, dragged out of some guys backyard, tore down and found one cylinder had chewwed up a nut. The piston had a bunch of impressions of a hex nut stamped all in it... I thought, well we're gonna bore it and replace pistons anyway, no big deal, right?.. Well I rebuilt it, and then beat on it for about two to three years before the rod let go, and excessively ventilated the crankcase... It was the same cylinder that had eaten the nut. Anyway, I guess my point is to not reuse the rod after a piston contact situation.

    • @CreekyGuy

My earlier comment still stands. Trust NO part of that engine. Maybe reuse the air cleaner and valve covers. OK timing chain cover, too. Everything else will become beer cans.
