So fun fact about the Lovecraft mythos, it's was made as an open setting by lovecraft so that anyone could write stories that could be considered canon, just like mythology because mythology has tons of contradicting stories and interpretations, especially the contradictory stuff was encouraged due to contradictions being a good way to potray the mystery behind these entities, it's why the Call of Cthulhu table top roleplaying game by sandy petersen is different (also plz don't don't be mad at the ttrpg it's actually really good) His letters show that he was actually quiet delighted when his writer frinds and other authors would riff or expand on what he called his “Yog Sothothery” Guys like Frank Belnap Long collabbed with him (*Hounds of Tindalos*), and August Derleth was the first one to publish Lovecraft's stories if I remember correctly. Then there's Robert W. Chambers - he wrote *The King in Yellow*; and Hastur *is* technically Cthulhu's brother Edit: I would highly suggest elder scrolls lore being something you binge in the future, it's wild as fuck

The other fun thing is his writing style is a point of criticism for many professional authors both now and at the time but their an argument for it. He loved to write in Purple Prose. The best example was a college essay he wrote about Cats and Dogs, his extremely flowery usage of words made it sound like he was talking about a pantheon of gods with great and unknowable wisdom but it you dumbed down his words he was just saying Cats are superior animals because they’re intelligent, self sufficient, and can remove unwanted pests. When he talked about Dogs it sounded like he was talking about idiotic thugs that are incapable of basic survival. What he was really saying is that Dogs are the worst because they’re violent, loud, and can’t take care of themselves. The way he wrote about both of them added to the relatively simple message because your imagination ran away with all the complicated and flowery words
I remember hearing something about a patient of the Russian sleep experiment, I remember something along the lines of his last words while barely alive and barely sane were “we were never meant to sleep” after they’d all gone nuts. I feel like that just makes the whole “if you sleep Nyarlathotep can control you” thing way eerier
For anyone curious about the art, it’s from the manga called elder sister like one, it’s about orphan boy who is adopted by Shub-Niggurath (the black goat of the forest, mother of 1000 young) and yes, it’s as horny as it looks and sounds. Oh, Its illustrated by Pochi-sensei. YES THAT Pochi sensei. (To those who don't know about Pochi sensei: She's the mother to Reine from Hololive ID, and the illutrator to the very infamous series called "Do You love your Mom and her Two hit multitarget attacks". Yes the mother incest anime character designs were created by Pochi sensei.) Also, the manga is pretty wholesone as well but if it does induce some unwholesome thoughts, fear not you can enjoy 12 whole volume of very wholesome unwholesomeness in the website that rhymes with smentai. Sauce: Ane Naru Mono, or The Sister of the Woods with a Thousand Young
Ane Naru Mono is a wonderful series about the lives of two lonely people who found solace in each other. While undoubtedly more on the ecchi side given the nature of Pochi-sensei's work, I like how much heart she puts into the relationship between the leads. The art is as beautiful as you can expect. I hope she makes a new chapter soon...
Lovecraft DID write a lot of stuff in cooperation with others. He was part of a community of authors who referenced each other's works frequently, and wrote so that their stories were conceivably part of the same world.
Even at faster than light speed, the time it would take to traverse an infinite space is basically forever. The answer to ,"Are we there yet?" is always "no".
Just because the universe is infinite doesn't mean that there can't be set distances between locations. Lovecraft's stories actually predate the idea of an expanding universe, so his infinite means there is always more, where our understanding of an infinite universe today is it's always growing.
@@NoESanity theirs an under represented aspect to the reality of the Lovecraft world. By our perspective that difference means nothing because we can’t run off the edge on purpose, it’s imperceptible to us under normal circumstances
@@NoESanity No, our understanding of an infinite universe isn't that it's always growing. The whole universe, as far as we know, may be infinite in size, from the very beginning. It is also growing, but it was already infinite. It's not growing out towards anything, though. Only the space between the things within it is growing.
@@_P2M_ You really need to work on your reading compression. Back during lovecrafts time, the infinite universe meant that you got on a spaceship and flew infinitely fast in any direction. There would always be more universe out there. Our modern understanding of the universe, if you get in that same spaceship, you will reach a point where the universe just stops because you would be beyond the point where anything else has reached. You might still be able to fly through the void, but that isn't the same thing as continuously finding more galaxies. You also very obviously do not understand the expansion of the universe. Do some reading before you are stupid in the comments section of a TH-cam video.

17:00 It's actually worse than infinity squared. It is infinity to the power of infinity infinity times AKA infinity to the order of infinity, hence the name Ordered Universe. Infinite Universe x infinite worlds x infinite dreams, each of which contains an infinite number of realms, each of which contains more infinite worlds, and so on infinitely. No wonder math gave the man panic attacks.
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is Lovecraft’s longest work and the only one so far I’ve read, it’s absolutely crazy and does a great job at delivering that fear of the unknown
Consider the following: Our universe isn't even real to Shub so her trying to destroy Ghatanothoa is just her developing her own headcanon after reading like, a comic book about our universe.
I think the whole confusion with Azathoth dreaming reality is because it's said that when Azatoth wakes up he will destroy it all or something like that and the same occurs with Mana-Yood-Sushai so some dude might have mix them both and went with it and everyone else bought it because it sounded cool and are too lazy to fact check.
It’s well known that everything is simply part of azathoth dreaming. Hence why when it wakes up everything is destroyed. That would include yog. The issue is that azathoth doesn’t have much going on upstairs. Azathoth is obviously stronger and the supreme ruler but yog has actual brains
I can see how they thought Azathoth thinks he dreams reality from 1:51:56, but that's also why I can say they made a leap in logic. "Muttered things he had dreamed but could not understand" + "Whence Flow the Aimless waves whose chance combining gives each frail cosmos its eternal law) The first one tells he is seeing the future while the second tells of SOMETHING creating the world as it should be. If you connect them both, you make it seem like the sleeper is the one who creates the world in his dreams, but these lines EASILY tell of two different things. The universe could've been created some way because of him doing something (like a big bang before going to sleep) but the most that could be interpreted is that his dreams are of the future (and not even necessarily of our universe either)
The Blind Idiot God has also been retroactively turned into Sagitarius A. a.k.a. the SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE in the center of the Milky Way. So he's been turned into the reason why the Milky Way keeps spinning.
Honestly as someone who watched the original 5 videos he put out the comments for a week were filled with people talking about the "the gods make you crazy if you see them" and the "Azathoth dreams reality" thing. So honestly I completely understand why he spends so much time trying to reiterate to people why they are wrong it's deserved imo. Also because I love his pettiness it's peak. Also hope you watch his other videos about power scaling mythologies or maybe the Sun Wukong vid
I thought Outer God was an August Derelith thing (Derelith being a friend and contemporary of Lovecraft's that contributed to the mythos and helped make Lovecraft famous after Lovecraft died)
Most of the entities in the Cthulhu Mythos were written in by other authors at the same time as Lovecraft or after. Cthylla is one of these beings that was later written in by someone after Lovecraft died so if your using Lovecraft only it is that Cthulhu is immortal and unkillable with the boat just killing one of his avatars. Lovecraft himself wrote the Cthulhu Mythos at its highest power level because he was afraid of almost everything that he didn't fully understand having dreams and paranoia that made him feel infinitely small so he created a universe where what everyone is doing is literally meaningless when compared to other things that exist in it.
Imagine if Cthulu was under the ocean. A being who stands miles tall. So when he rises up out of the sea, wouldn't the sea level drop and add miles of oceanfront property to every continent? Maybe the city sunk under the ocean because Chtulu came to visit and sat down in the ocean and everything flooded.
Speaking about the flash if i remember correctly someone once calculated that flash at his absolute peak was moving at least 800k times faster than speed of light. Also while flash can move to higher dimensions he cannot cross the source wall (as far as i know) or enter the overvoid which is dcs equivalent the gate and void.
Technically, the absolute peak of Flash is immeasurable - but not because of his physical motion (this is very much finite), but moreso because of his nature as a time traveller, which makes him acausal (outside the laws of cause and effect). Since speed is both distance/time, the concept of speed is irrelevant when "time" is a factor you can control. What does this mean for Flash? Absolutely nothing, because he never use this aspect of time travel, or at least not consistently. Edit: other than that, yeah pretty much in agreement. Also, to add onto this, his method to travel to higher dimensions is really dependent on the Speed Force itself, which has its own limits if I remember correctly.
Lovecraft did allow his friends to write stuff with his characters in them. He was in a sort of writers circle where everyone just wrote stuff for each other. I'm pretty sure that Lovecraft contributed to Conan the Barbarian in this way (or maybe it was the other way around). Anyway, Lovecraft gave permission for his friends to write stuff, then after he died they kept writing stuff. And they let people write stuff, and so on. Its one of the reasons that Lovecraft's stories became more popular after he died.
The reason so many people write new stuff in the love raft universe is because it was essentially opened up to all other writers to use however they wanted
Oh for crying out loud, there's nothing wrong with Shub-Niggurath's name. It's pronounced, Shub Ni Goo Rath. Yes, Lovecraft was racist as hell, but Shub-Niggurath has been used by several authors in countless works of fiction. Hell she was even the final boss in the original Quake.
Ontop of this - their _whole_ major problem with him is what he named his _CAT._ He used a word that was _the_ word for a group of people. There were not other terms, such as African American, to use in that day. _Everyone called them the same thing._ Was he racist? _Yes._ Against everyone NOT ANGLO. I mean to include even Slavics, Welsh, Irish, Arabs, Africans... _everyone._ He was not color specific, as is the view of modern racism in the west.
Fun fact: In the card game Yu-Gi-Oh, there is a small archetype in the game that is dedicated to the entities in HP Lovecrafts stories. You'll have to put extra cards into the deck though because there aren't enough cards in the actual archetype to make a complete deck. Also the boss monster in the archetype is banned in the TCG and OCG for life because it's effects paired with the other effects of the other cards are insane, the boss monster is none other than Azothoth.

It’s always “we can’t fathom other gods this, we can’t truly describe this concept” but could Shub actually wrap her head around vtubers or her own rule 34?
Shub maybe is one of the only sentients that aren't entirely horrible like most humans. So she kinda just helps VERY RARELY if they have no other way if they want to cull a beast because itd be funny, its like influencing your favorite show. Also there are characters so very strong that they can fight even under the big crazy effect of not properly seeing the enemy let alone just any fighter having honed abilities enough to mitigate most of it passively. Also it's poetry i could see 'if it wakes up it kills everything' can be reinterpreted as 'its dreams are reality' because fancy poem things.
No, I am pretty sure that Shub is definitely evil though. Or at least, no better than most-everything else in the void. The monster was originally from Pluto which was important to the other gods. So I imagine her grudge against it must be because of that history. Whatever that may be. And she eats most of her children if I remember correctly. Like a huge swirling mass of creation and destruction. She births approximately as much as she immediately eats. Which.......... actually...... might be why she's so powerful. Because the other gods are powered by blood and feed on souls, it's possible that the real reason she's so successful in the VOID ecosystem is because she generates her own food source, which probably allows for exponential growth. 🤔
I play Dwarf Fortress I understand what it’s like to be Shub on some small level. You watch things play out, sometimes if you’re bored you zoom out and look at the individual lives of countless people within the course of 200 years of history for this one iteration of a universe, you sometimes find history of an interesting artifact track its last known location throughout history and either through a personal avatar go get it, or manipulate a civilization to get it. The people themselves are all their own people with their own thoughts, opinions, likes and dislikes so while you can’t directly control them (you technically can but that’s no fun) you issue a vague set of orders that will get done by someone eventually. You can lead this civilization to ruin or salvation, you can focus them on other civilizations or (again) get that thing you heard about in the past. Sometimes you just sit back and watch one particularly interesting person. Maybe mess with them personally, or if you’re feeling benevolent have them be your own personal Chosen. It’s sort of what Shub does. She watches all this stuff happen in our world, see different people, sure they all have their lives but they’re not real. At least not real in the same way she is. She might intervene once in a while or help someone or just wants to push someone in a direction for entertainment but theirs no true investment other than entertainment.
An important thing to remember is that the lovecraft mythos only got popular long after lovecraft died and mostly after other people had revised and updated it with things that were more understandable to an audience. Thus things like outer gods and elder gods and great old ones becoming more generalized. The lovecraft mythos became more of a consensus of things people liked in his stories and things people made based off of his stories. I dont get so caught up about it as a lot of people because thats just how human storytelling has worked since the dawn of time, its only recently that weve locked stories down to only one teller. Mythology, Tradition, Culture and Religion wouldnt be anywhere near what it is under modern understanding if only one telling were allowed. Its respecting the thing youre building off of that matters.
These stories had a reasonable popularity at the time, but it was very niche thing, in fact the magazine that published these stories, Weird Tales has an immense influence on the modern pop culture, another author who worked in this magazine at the same time was Robert E. Howard, the father of the modern dark fantasy and sword and sorcery subgenre.( his most famous conan the barbarian)
It's funny that two Japanese guys created the two greatest recent works of the Lovecraft and Robert genres! Jungi Ito with Cosmic Horror and Kentaro Miura with sword and sorcery genre.
There is another video called "The Absurd Scale of the Cthulhu Mythos" that expands massively on the cosmology of the mythos. The explanation from the recommended video does complicate the cosmology fairly compared to this video, but it is fun and expands on our understanding.
I think the reason the boat managed to pierce his skin was because it was just an avatar. Just a little speck of what little power could be sent through to Earth with the little amount of blood he had.
I always thought it was because Cthulhu wasn’t actually awake and just did his fourth dimensional equivalent of rollling over and hitting the snooze button. The sailors dying from sanity loss when coming into contact, and the ominous dreams of Cthulhu and psychological breakdowns all around the world? All that was _nothing_ compared to it actually waking up, and in such a case, a boat isn’t going to help. The boat didn’t win a fight against Cthulhu. That would imply Cthulhu was even aware there was a fight. Or a boat.
I could have sworn it was his uncle, but yea it was named by someone else. And he loved the fuck out of that cat. He wrote a whole ass memblog about how cool cats are and how much dogs suck in the 1930s
The Derleth Mythos category includes all of August Derleth's work following Lovecraft passing in 1937, and has been separated from the rest of the Mythos writings due to its unique and sometimes divergent vision from the previous categories. After Lovecraft's death, August Derleth began to shape the existing Myth cycles of Lovecraft and the "Lovecraft Circle" into something he would call the "Cthulhu Mythos", which is the term which persists to this date. During his tenure as the one of the leading voices of Lovecraft's legacy, he was an extremely prolific writer to rival Lovecraft himself. Some of those stories are based on concepts and storylines found in Lovecraft writings and thus, he is posthumously credited as co-author. However, during that time he introduced certain concepts and themes into the Mythos that would become problematic for fans of the Lovecraft Myth Cycle and of the Lovecraft Circle Myth Cycles. Among these, were a concept of cosmic good and evil, a set of benevolent Elder Gods, and an elemental categorization of the existing Mythos deities. These ideas have been carried in some form the present Expanded Mythos, but many authors and creators have cherry-picked from Derleth's creations and some of the more troubling and divergent ideas have been ignored. Needless to say, I became a fan of the mythos afterwards.
fun thing to think about, hyperbole aside: infinite squared is the same thing as infinite. cuz infinity is not a number, it's all the numbers, including any numbers you might add to it. it's everything, everywhere, all at once, all of the time. if you add 1 to infinity, it's still infinity, because that 1 was already part of infinity. although, in math, there are ways to use infinity as a place holder of sorts, kinda similar to the way we use zero, which is, in a sense, infinite nothing. but in philosophy, nothing can't really exist, because the concept of nothing is the absence of something, and that absence therefore requires the "something" to be absent. and that absence is a something, and thus, not nothing. nothing can't exist, because existence is something, even if it's just a blank space.
Never forget that in the original Call of C'thulhu, someone drives a small yacht into his head and makes it explode. For a dude who's supposed to be miles tall, either his head pops like a high pressure balloon or he's got a tiny ass head. Also, the Olympians kicked his ass pretty thoroughly, which means Zeus, Hades and Poseiden > Nice Boat > C'thulhu. Which means powerscaling their Vtuber avatars just got infinitely harder. As infinitely hard as it is for Lovecraft to find a word between a thousand and infinite.
Cthulhu's power scaling is variable. Also these things never "die" die. The 3-dimentional representations are just avatars. To "kill" kill an outer god you'll need to travel into the void and find a way to destroy their essence.
So if cthulu can bring back the dead, and cthulu is also reborn if he dies, he could kill himself, be reborn and bring back the old one. Infinite cthulu glitch
And since Lovecraft’s work is in the public domain you can make your own extra-dimensional space with your own Pantheon of Madness and consider them cannon as well! 🤯.
So the thing about the Lovecraft Mythos that this man seems to miss is that... not only is it an open setting, it *has been since the beginning*. by Lovecraft's own statement, anything anyone writes in the universe *is canon*. Even the contradictory things. In fact, ESPECIALLY the contradictory things. It's part of what makes it such an interesting setting. So like... he's not wrong, but depending on the canon both Outer and Other gods can be correct, or they can be the synonyms for the same thing. Cthulhu could be considered to be extradimensional, or he could be under the sea. So while his video is correct if you explicitly only use lovecraft's books... That was *never* how the mythos was supposed to be considered. Not even Lovecraft actually suggested that he had some special claim to canonicity. He had a whole circle of writers who all wrote stories in the mythos, which he considered just as canonical as his own work.
Nyarlathotep being so strong makes sense. We all saw the family tree Lovecraft drew. While it isn't in a published story, he could have had it in mind with his writing. Based on that thought process, his service to the other members of the Other Gods is entirely willing, and the entertainment he gets from tornenting us is part of why he hasn't been more... Active in his work during what the stories considered the present.
I remember a description of the motives of Nyarlathotep. "He has the ability to destroy the earth, but he doesn't. Because he wants to watch us suffer. He is the perfect blend of satan and the joker."
Meh, after reading a few Lovecraft stories involving Nyarlathotep, I came to find this to be a superficial take. He’s nowhere near as chaotic enough in his motives to be compared to the Joker (which is ironic, from the Crawling Chaos.) In every story featuring Nyarlathotep, he does either one of two things. 1) Prevent a human(s) from accessing eldritch knowledge, and 2) Being the one giving a human(s) eldritch knowledge. After several stories, it draws a pattern of Nyarlathotep controlling and nudging humanity’s development. This is not a game of watching us randomly suffer for fun. He has _plans_ for us, and we have no idea what his end goal even looks like. That’s arguably more worrying than just being his toys…
Actually in the book “Through the gates of the silver key” It is described that the other gods are actually mere illusions thought by those below the ultimate gate and the true form of the other gods is as archetypes who view everything as parts of their being and these archetypes are all part of the supreme archetype who is Yog-sothoths true form.
So in lovecraft's lore, our physical reality is a crust that gradually grows over the dreamlands, and the whole universe is centered around one massive monster waking up every once in a while and eating that crust before going back to sleep. Every other force in the universe exist to keep that one monster sated and entertained as the crust grows. And that crust is just the shell of an infinitely vast creature. All of this reality is just a single creature eating itself. Its hunger is an entity. Its will to eat is an entity. Its ability and will to grow is an entity. Everything else is just a parasite that will be used as food.

So fun fact about the Lovecraft mythos, it's was made as an open setting by lovecraft so that anyone could write stories that could be considered canon, just like mythology because mythology has tons of contradicting stories and interpretations, especially the contradictory stuff was encouraged due to contradictions being a good way to potray the mystery behind these entities, it's why the Call of Cthulhu table top roleplaying game by sandy petersen is different (also plz don't don't be mad at the ttrpg it's actually really good)
His letters show that he was actually quiet delighted when his writer frinds and other authors would riff or expand on what he called his “Yog Sothothery”
Guys like Frank Belnap Long collabbed with him (*Hounds of Tindalos*), and August Derleth was the first one to publish Lovecraft's stories if I remember correctly. Then there's Robert W. Chambers - he wrote *The King in Yellow*; and Hastur *is* technically Cthulhu's brother

And the sun isn’t the sun… an iceberg is required.

Ane Naru Mono is a wonderful series about the lives of two lonely people who found solace in each other. "A talking cat could solo your favorite fictional 'verse (pointing at Goku)" he already does. He's called Beerus.
Lovecraft DID write a lot of stuff in cooperation with others. He was part of a community of authors who referenced each other's works frequently, and wrote so that their stories were conceivably part of the same world.
He was known for just letting people use his stuff for their stories he kinda found it flattering and awesome that other writers were using his world.
@@NoESanity
No, our understanding of an infinite universe isn't that it's always growing.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is Lovecraft’s longest work and the only one so far I’ve read, it’s absolutely crazy and does a great job at delivering that fear of the unknown
Consider the following:
Our universe isn't even real to Shub so her trying to destroy Ghatanothoa is just her developing her own headcanon after reading like, a comic book about our universe.
Let's go!!! Love the mythology videos of Literary Who.
@@Chaoticchips my theory is that azathoth is simply ths center of the dream and the other outer gods are parts of its subconscious

Ya know, this makes Warcraft's upcoming expansions so much more interesting, since the saga is about the awakening of Azeroth's world-soul.
I can see how they thought Azathoth thinks he dreams reality from 1:51:56, but that's also why I can say they made a leap in logic. "Muttered things he had dreamed but could not understand" + "Whence Flow the Aimless waves whose chance combining gives each frail cosmos its eternal law)
The first one tells he is seeing the future while the second tells of SOMETHING creating the world as it should be.
I think you can interpret the second line as the flute players creating the laws of the universe with their music as well.
Honestly as someone who watched the original 5 videos he put out the comments for a week were filled with people talking about the "the gods make you crazy if you see them" and the "Azathoth dreams reality" thing.
Nux is the lore master. He knows this of all lore. Meaningless of you to say this.
In Overlord, Ainz has a super tier spell associated with Shub
This is why I hate math. If the "Ordered Universe" is indeed infinite, the average population is zero.

It’s in her grand plan to produce another “thousand young”

The drug Nux uses to activate the pineal gland is Adventure Time.

Or a boat.
fun fact about Lovecraft's cat

Another factor is that particular name for pets with black fur was very common for the time.

These ideas have been carried in some form the present Expanded Mythos, but many authors and creators have cherry-picked from Derleth's creations and some of the more troubling and divergent ideas have been ignored.

fun thing to think about, hyperbole aside: infinite squared is the same thing as infinite. cuz infinity is not a number, it's all the numbers, including any numbers you might add to it. it's everything, everywhere, all at once, all of the time. if you add 1 to infinity, it's still infinity, because that 1 was already part of infinity.
although, in math, there are ways to use infinity as a place holder of sorts, kinda similar to the way we use zero, which is, in a sense, infinite nothing. but in philosophy, nothing can't really exist, because the concept of nothing is the absence of something, and that absence therefore requires the "something" to be absent. and that absence is a something, and thus, not nothing. nothing can't exist, because existence is something, even if it's just a blank space.
What, Nodin can't be happy and horrible at the same time? Come on man, leave him alone with his awesome trident..

Nux's chat do be goated sometimes
Neat

Nyarlathotep being so strong makes sense. We all saw the family tree Lovecraft drew. While it isn't in a published story, he could have had it in mind with his writing. Based on that thought process, his service to the other members of the Other Gods is entirely willing, and the entertainment he gets from tornenting us is part of why he hasn't been more... Active in his work during what the stories considered the present.
Can you please do the world of darkness lore the history, and the knowledge of that entire series is just bonkers
He’s nowhere near as chaotic enough in his motives to be compared to the Joker (which is ironic, from the Crawling Chaos.)
In every story featuring Nyarlathotep, he does either one of two things.
The Flash is unfathomably fast, however for creatures of the void it would look like a drawing moving incredibly fast on a piece of paper

The only times I can think of Shub-nigguarth being killed is in the first Quake game and The Broken but whole South Park game.
Nyarlethotep is male btw, because if you listen to what he was calling Nyarlethotep you would see that he refers to nyarlethotep as he
