If techno producers learned music theory, they'd realise how utterly basic their compositions are. ROOT - ROOT - ROOT - ROOT I'm not trying to shit on techno. I just think it's comically pretentious of techno producers, of all people, to say stuff like "I don't need music theory" when they rarely even make music that gets off the root. You don't need music theory, but your compositions are brain-dead basic? Very pretentious. An arpeggiator isn't magic either. The amount of times I've seen people orgasm to an arpeggiator playing a basic major/minor triad is too damn high. Stop thinking that shit is Mozart. I understand the magic in techno is more in production and sound design, but listening to a bunch of 6+ minute tracks that *_literally stick to a SINGLE note/chord_* gets very boring very fast... And on top of that, I have to see a bunch of techno producers say bullshit like "lol I don't need music theory." If this is you, you're the laughing stock of musicians everywhere and you're the reason they don't take techno and _"EDM"_ seriously. Punk rock literally had more complex compositions. At least they changed chords and often had more than 1 progression. If you're not gonna learn it, at least don't be a dick about it, techno broducers. The pretentiousness is just mind boggling because of how utterly basic most of these people's compositions actually are. From a "trained" musician's perspective, you're basically playing one fucking note... For 6+ minutes straight. WOW.
I haven't don't music production in a while. I don't know why TH-cam suddenly recommended this video, but I am thankful. The video was informative. I feel like going back again.
Dang your latest videos have been answering all those small nagging questions/roadblocks I’ve had that took me years to figure out you ended up answering them. Keep it up!
dude this is probably one of the coolest shot vids you've done to date. really enjoyed how you pull the clips of you on the keys. much appreciated brother
Thanks, I've been trying to become a better filmmaker, one step at a time, trying to learn to make the videos more visually rich :) thanks for noticing!
I literally think this tip is the one thing that's missing for me, I write interesting chord progressions but then never know how to built them into song without it just being the same over and over, thank you! It seems so obvious now you've shown the way!
You have gotta be the best music production teacher on TH-cam. That was a really educational video with lots of tips on song structure which hugely compliments the technical side of music production educational videos. Great work 👏. Thanks.
Oscar, like some people already said; the production value has significantly improved, and the overall clarity of how you explain all those different topics to a very diverse audience is very impressive, chapeau!
It was an interesting point of view however I dont think that deep into the mathematical nature of sounds I just do what I feel. Music for Me is directly connected to My feelings and emotions.
In one video, you have rearranged the musical universe into an image I see in sharp focus and tangible depth. Your not just an excellent teacher, you are a master educator. Than you! 👍🏼
I like to use the Phil Collin's in the air tonight trick. is a great example of tension created with a 'pedal bass'. you can hold your bass on the 1 while you move the chords subtlety then as the bass joins the movement everything lifts.
Although I do not write particulary melodic stuff these days I know a couple tricks I think are worth sharing about chords, 'spreading' notes across the keyboard is a good way to make your synths sound wider, add variation to your chord progession, and emphasize tension in certain moments, all you have to do is transpose certain notes, take the root note one octave lower or move that fifth one octave higher, as long as you dont overlap with other instrument frequency youll be good! experiment and have fun with this technique, youll find some interesting results for sure.
Dang your latest videos have been answering all those small nagging questions/roadblocks I’ve had that took me years to figure out or you ended up answering them. Thanks and keep it up!
Always good to help remind me of my theory.I used to play the flute&have recently started to remind me,but being monophonic I'm really enjoying these bits about chords.thanks again squire
Wow, i accidentially dropped into your clips while i was looking for Psytrance content, and absolutely didn't expect myself still being here days later. But you are so phenomenal in breaking down dry and boring music theory, short , crisp and interesting into just the basics. ... if my music teacher in school would have been this skilled, i wouldn't have needed 2-3 centuries to find my way back, ok it was just playing flute for 3 years as a kid, from listening to start making music in 2017, without any ambitious plans - not like so many people, just for myself, simply love doing it :)
I saw the title and came here for the secret to physically punching someone in their emotions, but learned some great music production tips instead. I am not disappointed in the slightest, but my search continues.
your videos do a great job of putting to words things I've always gravitated towards when writing a track, but never explicitly told myself or understood out loud. kudos.
There we go. This is what I am going to try on my next song. So many of Oscar's tutorials end up being tried out in new tunes I write, and more often than not it makes them sound bloody good. Great stuff Oscar, this is awesome.
I've been a mixing engineer for almost 10 years and always made music as a hobby but recently wanted to start taking it more seriously. It's crazy how much music I've worked on but never thought of this.
You released this video at a good time for me. I'm new to making music and I keep feeling that what I make is so repetitive. The music I'm inspired by is also repetitive but somehow doesn't get boring. Even though I subtract and add elements, and make little changes on the fly, there's very little 'journey' to the song. This may be a major reason. Thanks.
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and it is by far the most eye opening and helpful video for song writing (for me) I’ve seen. This video was just the bridge I needed to help bring my song writing together. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
Oscar, new studio and set up is looking really nice - congratulations ! Such a great, clear, and concise explanation - Oscar you are the man - Thank you
All the best wishes from Munich Germany, please keep doing what you are doing :) and special greetings to the Artist, the female student who made theese Techno basslines (conntent of a different clip) - The first sample was absolutely mindblowing!!! :) Love, peace and sweet Psybrations to all of you :) Bouncing Noise ૐ
The way you built up to that progression was very nice and smooth, I do stuff like this quite a lot already, but sometimes a nice example for some inspiration goes a long way
This is an awesome video, extremely helpful for getting a basic understanding and gets right to the point with no filler. Thanks for making it. Subscribed.
Altijd geweldige video’s Oscar, je helpt enorm om de bomen door het bos te zien. Keep them coming 😇 als je ooit een cursus hebt in Amsterdam, let me know ;)
You have a GR-1! I love mine and love that you have one. I also have a Quantum, which does impressive granular too but but they're different. Excellent vids, the best.
Great video!! This is the thing a lot of miss and have a hard time translating for people to understand. Thank you. I would love to request more of this type of video. However I really like and wanted to see more of how you can create a chord progression for your track. & Then how to apply it effectively in layers. You explain it here more I want to go deeper into that process.
Thanks, that's a nice trick. At the moment I like my songs but I feel the arrangements are a bit to static and I'm searching for ways to add more progression to the songs (without just adding more and more layers). I will definitely try this!
