And Dick's choice of Superman's old codename was a nice touch since Superman and Robin were actually a lot closer than we think of them being these days. After all, all of those hundreds and hundreds of "Superman and Batman" stories were actually "Superman and Batman&Robin" stories. Superman was a huge part of Robin's life back then, to the extent that on rare occasions, Robin would team up with Superman's closest thing to a sidekick that he had, Jimmy Olsen.
I always saw Dick using the name Nightwing to symbolize that he was now Batman's equal the same way that Superman was Batman's equal when he used the name as the Batman of Kandor. Dick was now no longer the junior partner. He was his own version of Batman.
I like to see it as him imitating batman and superman. He wants to be batman and appreciates all that he's done for him, but doesn't want the emotional baggage that comes with it, so as he admires superman for his optimism and hope, which he as robin gave batman, he chooses superman's name as the batman of kandor, kind of a merging of the 2.

I don't know if someone explained this yet or if you knew about it already, but the "Kara No! Kara Yes!" Is a reference to Dragon Ball Z abridged. Having characters constantly say "Vegeta No!" With Vegeta replying, you guessed it "Vegeta, Yes!"
You know, a video giving a brief history of post-Crisis Supergirls before Kara's return might be an interesting discussion. Even include that stuff from the Superman/Aliens crossover.

I appreciate this "classic" DC art-direction. Everyone looks, well, super-human; gorgeous figures, men & women, like Classical statues carved into life.
While on the whole Nightwing thing, in the 2009 run of Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) in #24 (the last issue) she gets hit by some ground up Black Mercy and trips balls, seeing an alternate future for herself where she becomes Knightwing. Yes, with a K.
Pre-Crisis Nightwing also took his name from the Kryptonian Nightwing: he mentions it when he first appears in his Nightwing costume in The Judas Contract. There was also another Nightwing and Flamebird during the Krypton War/World of Supermen era.
YES! Lor-Zod and Thara Ak-var! loved that story! :D which is actually an interesting juxtaposition, since lor-Zod is the sone of Dru-Zod... AKA the "Kneel before Zod!!!" Zod. You're going to talk about New Krypton Nightwing and Flamebird soon right? That was one of my favorite depictions of the concept and I loved how it deepend the lore of Krypton.
Maybe one day you'll do an episode about Matrix? That whole thing was so very confusing to me, a first time Superman reader coming in fresh off of Death of Superman, and it would be good to know if others felt that way or just me :)
I'm an old-school fan. Silver Age Supergirl is my Supergirl. I knew about Matrix, but one thing that I always wondered about: When Matrix Supergirl tries to take on Doomsday, one punch turns her into a big blob of protoplasm. How many readers were shocked by that? How many weren't aware of the change in the character's history and were flummoxed by this scene?
@@jimgillespie6109 I was in a comics store once and two guys were talking about why Batman is a more impressive hero than Superman. Batman can _die_ said one. Uh huh. Prove it by killing him off and not returning him for twenty years. That's what happened to Kara Zor-El. And introduce a character who calls himself Batman but is nothing like the Batman everyone knows.
I like matrix's storylines (and the hair helps), especially in the conner kent superboy comic, but I think her backstory was way too overly complicated, what with the protoplasm and alternate world. They could've just said cadmus or lex created living protoplasm, which escaped and saw superman in action and copied his look, albeit as a female version.
So many of these fallen soldiers of plotline would really shine with some proper love and care. I would love to see this revisited. Hmm, there’s a lot more Nightwings: Chris Kent/Lor-Zod, Stephanie Brown in a What If, Barbara Gordon in Smallville Season 11 (controversially), Nite-Wing, Darkwing, the Nightwings team from 2019, maybe even Katana/Tatsu Yamashiro ALMOST becoming Nightwing in Beware the Batman season 2.
Tim Drake if they handled the "Bruce lost in time story" better... although I can see Tim being all "my quest is a dark one" and not wanting to use the name in case he "tarnishes" it.

If I remember correctly, this arc not only had to deal with the "One Year Later" crossover event, but also dealt with Jeph Loeb abruptly jumping off the book after issue 5 due to a personal tragedy. DC was basically scrambling to get anyone who was available to come on to write on the book until they could get a new regular team on board.
After doing a lot of deep dives within comics, especially X-Men, a book not being unquestionably horny in some places is sign of not fitting your template. What's next, Damian's short runnas Nightwing in Injustice?
If you want Power Girl hitting on Earth 1 Superman, try JLA #147 (1977). Dinah to Ollie: "And I used to call you a fast worker!" as PG drags Supes out of the room for tour.
If you're going to keep the Nightwing train going, you should do Superman as Nightwing, since that's where it started. And, IIRC, there was another Kandorian duo who took over as Nightwing and Flamebird. Then you could do them. Then I think we've run out of Nightwings...

Okay, I know you were joking when you said, "which nightwing should I talk about next" buuuut, wasn't Chris Kent, (lor zod) also nightwing? Maybe a video on that?
The Fauna of Krypton is interesting. They dont have bats or robins..the closest thing are these terrorbirds like nightwings and firebirds..but they have nornal domestic dogs of similar or exactly the same breeds as those found on earth. It's weird because Krypton's lore is SOMETIMES kept cannonical in the wierdes ways..when we learn the backstory of Doomsday, we see thar the planet didnt have an age of dinosuars but was just Australia on Steriods millions of years before kryptonians evolved; a million different things that are all made to kill you, living an everyday life doing so. Its bizzar because they have all these fantastical monsters that kill a vulnerable creature in seconds of emerging onto it (doomsday had to die A LOT. he was the ultimate bully vause by a traumatic childhood..hey..if you were forced by your father to DIE hundreds of times, youd be a bit pissed at the world too..all of them.) The idea that Kryton was a more naturally savage and hostile planet compared to earth is supported by many little things throughout the comics including the lack of species that arn't physiclaly adapted for sever physical survival. Nothkng like a robin or bat could survive, the only flying animals are Deathbirds. It's a futher literary foreshadowing thar Krypton was always unstable naturally and destined to go out the way it did. But then..Krypton's sun was red. This may seem inconsequential until you realize how similar kryptonians NOT affected by yellow sunlight are to humans. We know the Kryptonians just before the end are far more technologically advanced than us but this si also due to then haveing evolved earlier than us. Krypton was basically far further fown its evolutionary path than us at its end. So..how did humanoid creatures not only parralell evolve so closely to us on thsi distant planet but alos one where it seems impossibek for then to have survived thatvway to do so? How did canid creatures that were capeable to be domesticated by these hominids also survive at first? Also, what does the evolutionary taxonmy chart look like? The fact Krypto has the same physiological adaptation that humanoid Kryptonians do to absorb and utilize yellow sunlight menas it evolved wayyyy back at a point before the divergence of their common ancestors. What was this for and why did it stick? On krypton it seemingly served no purpose so it must have been an inate mutation in a planet where a contant trial-by-fire eveolutionary arms race was brewing..yet it remained and prevailed across very different lifeforms. What other ones shared this? Were there apelike beings ir did kryptonian humanoids come form something that looked more alien to our own evloutionary line? Were their simialrities more coincidental then we imagine? The implications about Krypton have always facinated me! I also feel the end of Krypton is so much more poetic by the fact the Kryptonian humanoids had survived such harsh odds to thrive in ways we could only even dream of, yet fell to such common and avoidable of follies.
I can only talk about the pre-Crisis versions with ease, so here goes: The "humans" on Krypton were all descended from two aliens from different cultures who crashed onto the planet, one named Kripp and the other named Tonn (or something like that; it's been a while since I've read that story). So, that's where the human-looking people came from. I know no explanation for why dogs look like dogs and monkeys look like monkeys (don't forget Beppo; Krypto isn't the only Kryptonian super-pet). However, in pre-Crisis stories, it wasn't purely the biology of Kryptonians that caused them to gain powers under low gravity and a yellow sun. This would supposedly (sometimes anyway) happen to anybody of any race when they were exposed to the right colored sun and low enough gravity. There's one color sun that gives powers to normal Earth people .(I want to say "blue" but I've forgotten. It could be orange or green.) So, the fact that Krypto and Beppo were not descended from Kripp and Tonn and therefore would not be very likely to have any biology in common doesn't matter; they still get superpowers under a yellow sun and low gravity, as does every other Kryptonian creature such as the metal-eater beast, the thought beast, or even the weird dragon creatures.
You ever read the old world of Krypton stories? I like the ones where onky the mutant kids survived the nuclear war because they were banished to the poles. They had psychic powers. Their kids were born normal but I guess the potential is there. I also liked superman/doomsday because it explained how complex lifeforms could appear on a planet orbiting a red giant star which are either late in their lifespan or very short to bein with. Later stories recon in to a red dwarf which would have a low energy output but last much longer than even our sun. However the life there would take longer to develop because the sun puts out less energy. However life could compensate with universal photosynthesis. It could also justify the relentless predation to pursue energy.
@@SimonMoon5 it was green, blue I think boosted superman, although a blue sun would make sense since blue suns are basically to our yellow sun what our yellow sun is to red suns. I would like if they brought back that concept of humans gaining superman powers under a blue sun.
@@KevinGriffin-b2s the idea of kryptonian's photosynthesis evolving from a need to absorb more sunlight is interesting, maybe even also add in that because its a harsher climate food was scarce and so they got alot of their energy from the sun to compensate, also explaining why superman doesn't need food under a yellow sun since the photosynthesis effects are amplified.
I love her Kandorian Nightwing armor. Too bad the action figure's build was so shrimpy. Barbara Kean’s red & black Gotham season four outfit also gives me goth Power Girl vibes. It’s mostly just missing a cape.

@@foisopracurtir6389 Oh, did she get the tattoo in Kandor? I didn't read the actual story. In that case, she wouldn't have her super powers. That would explain it, although I liked the idea of using Ma Kent's needles! :)

Shame that Ultraman wasn't one of the Reign of the Supermen, it would have been cool to have spent months following Ultraman thinking he might be the real Superman returned wrong.
Is Supergirl in that story part snake? That art around 8:51, yikes, lol. She also seems to have a variable sized butt.... Silly art aside, sounds like a good story :) I do actually think of Nightwing and Flamebird in the Kandorian reference, simply because that is where they first came from. Also where Dick got the idea from. I swear I remember Batman and Superman having taken on those identities when they did anything in Kandor which would make more sense as to how Grayson learned about it at all, but can find no references now. Edit: In the Wikipedia article for Dick Grayson it cites his knowledge of Batman and Superman's adventures in Kandor as the source of his knowledge about Nightwing when he first takes up that mantle, matching what I remember, however I can find no references to any such adventures actually having happened.
As soon as I heard Power Girl saying "Save me!" I can't help hearing "Somebody SAAAAAAAAAAVE me!" from the Smallville theme song. In terms of PG v SG, I'd have to say PG for her better developed "Pectoral Muscles"(!) - though it would undoubtedly depend whose comic it was in.
I'm not familiar with all of the changes made in the different versions of Ultramarine, but he originally wasn't a counterpart of Superman, he was a Terran who gained powers from kryptonite. If he's still not a version of Kal-El, then the romance isn't quite as creepy.

I'm almost certain that has already been done here in this channel.
Cool Nightwing! I remember hear about Kandor City's Nightwing and Flamebird, it's nice when comics acknowledge their mythology in a fun way.
thought to let you know... I casually use your reading of "Kara Noooo!" when I'm being clumsy and accidentally kick/drop stuff around my house.
9:07 "During the events of 'Infinite Crisis', the timeline was altered. So then I never had existed! I was erased from the history of time and space!"
"You were erased...from existence?"
"um, I got better."
It's so funny how all of these costumes are in DC Universe Online. I mean from the helmets to the gloves, belts and boots. So wild...
I simp for both the Dick Grayson Nightwing and Kara as Power Girl, so both of them deserve the mantle going off that metric
I appreciate this "classic" DC art-direction. Everyone looks, well, super-human; gorgeous figures, men & women, like Classical statues carved into life.
Wesley Dodds in the background I can't get over how awesome that compendium 1 is and im only half way through
While on the whole Nightwing thing, in the 2009 run of Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) in #24 (the last issue) she gets hit by some ground up Black Mercy and trips balls, seeing an alternate future for herself where she becomes Knightwing. Yes, with a K.
At 8:42 - WHAT is that pose? Friggin Ed Benes
Crises! Chaos! Candor! Kal-el! Kara! Karen! Conservator! Candles! Consummation! C-plots! I’m so here for all of this Classic Caaually Comics!!!
General Zod's teen son being a HERO is... not what Dru-Zod really wanted, but it's what happened. also Thara Ak-var was a Kandorian cop... and one of the good ones.
Nightwing and Flamebird, cool though strange to see it had come back. I never used to be a fan of Power Girl, but a friend convinced me to re-examine her,and I appreciate that.
I knew about this one because of back issues of Who's Who in DC. You should talk about "Nite Wing," the blonde guy in Bludhaven.
7:40 OH that explains everything, I read this comic and I was so confused the whole time because I hadn't been following the story and account picked up that issue etc. This explains so much
You're going to talk about New Krypton Nightwing and Flamebird soon right?
That was one of my favorite depictions of the concept and I loved how it deepend the lore of Krypton.
powergirl as nightwing is interesting story at least in my opinion.
Any plot that involves Power Girl's "windows" is a good plot to me!
The flamebird costume is very evocative of Big Barda
Between all the cake, cheesecake, and beefcake in this video, I think I gained 10 pounds just watching it.
Maybe one day you'll do an episode about Matrix? That whole thing was so very confusing to me, a first time Superman reader coming in fresh off of Death of Superman, and it would be good to know if others felt that way or just me :)
I _HATED_ that version of Supergirl! The art is nice, but the premise is a non-starter for me (I read my first Sg comic in 1972. I was 10).
@@jimgillespie6109 I know I was, that my first encounter with Matrix Supergirl
I like matrix's storylines (and the hair helps), especially in the conner kent superboy comic, but I think her backstory was way too overly complicated, what with the protoplasm and alternate world.
They could've just said cadmus or lex created living protoplasm, which escaped and saw superman in action and copied his look, albeit as a female version.
So many of these fallen soldiers of plotline would really shine with some proper love and care. I would love to see this revisited. Considering how things are going, I suppose it's only a matter of time, but then again, considering how things are going I doublt that love and care will factor into the equation much.
yeah this story if it'd been like 3 times as long might have been amazing.
its so cool to see both girls visit the bottle city, and explore their heritage further, even if its not 1:1, its a nice touch.
Love your lore videos, watched your other Powergirl videos to wrap my head around which version is on the Action Comics one and they are very informative. Since we are on the topic of Nightwing though could you do one on Chris Kent / Lor-Zod Nightwing? My boy Chris needs some love !!
Regarding alternate universe versions of relatives, pre-crisis Huntress called the silver age Batman "Uncle" so make of that what you will.
I would love to see a video on Van-Zee! One word: Super-weaving.
probably cos her dad was slam bradley jr (a cop undercover) not batman
@@mikerosoft2179 Pretty sure they are referring to the Earth two version of Huntress and in that Batman is her dad
@@nicholas-jasonroache1526 They are referring to the pre-Crisis Earth-Two Helena Wayne Huntress, not the pre-Flashpoint Helena Kyle version.
Everything the panel with the alien shouting "It's Nightwing!" is shown I think it's a Daemonite from WildC.A.T.s but then I remember that WildStorm wasn't yet part of the main DCU
Power Girl is and always will be my favorite DC character. Her sass is a thing of beauty. She takes shit from no one.
4:17 with her Big S, I’d say she resembled Bronze Age Supergirl more then Silver Age Supergirl
I was featured! Thank you!
I've always wanted to take a crack at drawing this version of PG and SG, but my hands hurt just looking at all the circles.
Watching this video reminded me that I once owned this comic, but gave it to my niece! Forgot all about the weird scene with fake Kal, but only remembered how it made me laugh when I seen the panel.
Just so outlandish!😂
My introduction to Superman and Jimmy as Nightwing and Flamebird was Jimmy Olsen #69. I love it but the concept of the psychic dogs still haunts me.
Glad I wasn’t collecting comics during that one year later time…Nightwing & Flamebird armors are a big improvement on Golden Age design… Nite-Wing for your next Nightwing vid …Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
Please do a video on Linda Danvers/Matrix Supergirl from Peter David's run
I'm a simple man. I see Power Girl, I click. I see the promise of someone going metal, I click.
This was bait tailor made for me.
I think the best inflection for "Kara, no!" is the same given by Dulce Sloan's Honeybee on "The Great North".
The Jimmy transforming video is so good I watched it again. Silver age is so great. There is a golden age character named Dynamite Thor, his power is that he has a huge supply of dynamite and solves everything by blowing stuff up it's fantastic.
I assumed that Powergirl was Nightwing from the Kryptonian legend of Nightwing and Flamebird
I only read the first issue to see Nightwing and then moved on, since I'm not really a Superman fan. The mastermind reveal perked my ears up when you said it. What's a Wonder Woman villain doing in a Supergirl book...OH it's HER, from Legion of Super Heroes! One day the forgotten empire will have its revenge!
It was neat to learn the lore behind the Nightwing moniker. I did not know about but it is pretty interesting!
Btw, Rucka did another Kightwing during the New Krypton saga, I also think that's where they solved the supergirl has to kill kal-el plot.
I am loving the Nightwing & Nightwing adjacent content
I think.... we need more Power Girl.
Having two Powergirls is how we got Divine though. Is that too much Powergirl? hmm.. opinions vary.
@@marhawkman303 There's such a thing as too much Power Girl?
@@GabePuratekuta well, that's a question for you to answer. :D
I honestly wish they'd use Divine more. The "super-mook" angle was a nice starting point. now what? :D
Unsightly rope lines? Try Velcro™ now!
(Really, how did she hide that whole cord for her cape under that uniform....??)
Weirdly, I just finished reading this arc.
It was horribly complex and didn't make sense.
I reached the end and didn't know whether I'd read a story or an octopus's knitting pattern.
I'm digging the red, blonde hair mix especially more red than blonde.

Wow. I had no idea so much info about Krypton was out there. As a 🦸♂️ fan, I salute you.
It time for Clark's other aged up son. It's time for Christopher Kent Nightwing!
“I wouldn’t want you to break on our wedding night” No, just pass on that whole conversation. Hit skip, please.
As no one else has said it yet, Great Wig. And of course great video too, but you knew that part.
Your bookshelf continues to drive my OCD bat guano, but other than that, I LOVE the content!
I loved the costumes and wish the story had a longer arc.
I love her Kandorian Nightwing armor. Too bad the action figure's build was so shrimpy.
Barbara Kean’s red & black Gotham season four outfit also gives me goth Power Girl vibes. It’s mostly just missing a cape.
Epic wig. It's up there with that pink one.very cool
But when do we get Nightwing's stint as Power Girl?
I believe Dick can pull it off! He's practically done the window before with Discowing.
Fun video! But how did Supergirl get a tattoo? Did the artist get hold of the needles Ma Kent used to sew Clark's first costume from indestructible Kryptonian fabric? How?
Well, the place was ruled by kryptonians... so maybe yes
@@foisopracurtir6389 Oh, did she get the tattoo in Kandor? I didn't read the actual story. In that case, she wouldn't have her super powers. That would explain it, although I liked the idea of using Ma Kent's needles! :)
I remember this story. Really enjoyed this.
OMG... this video made me remember this story that i tried to forget on purpose LMAO.
You should do the history and who took the mantle of the kryptonian Nightwing costumes!
Nightwing and Flamebird, cool.
"Edgified" = Bonus points
Talk about disco nightwing
Sometimes there is a whole new amazing little person living with you when you jump ahead 1 year. So it does indeed vary. :)
I know it's not a lot, but there's the Barbara Gordon Nightwing from the Smallville comics.
Yo, Nightwing the other persona of Supes isn't well known unfortunately
The iceberg keeps getting deeper and deeper.
Has an episode been done connecting "Proty" the tragic Legion mascot from the 60s, to the rebooted Supergirl character post-Crisis (and whatever happened to her after she merged with a human and turned out to be an earthbound angel or something like that, thanks to Peter David?)
I actually have this issue as I was collecting back then. I enjoyed it though haven't read it since it first came out.
I seem to recall a more recent iteration of Flamebird & Nightwing
One Year Later is mentioned again and a certain cover is shown...
*mental trauma renewed due to the Robin OYL story in that line*
Thank you. LOVED PG as Nightwing. Also, you mean "blessed" panels not "cursed."😉
No, we need Flamebird next. Yes, Jimmy, but also Bette. Especially Bette. Or did you cover her yet?
I didn't know that great job... BLAZEFAUST
Was it mentioned if the Saturn Queen in this story was the same person as the Legion's Saturn Queen?
You know, technically, if we're not from the same universe, we're not actually related. Right, Kara?
...
Kara?
...
I know you can hear me, Kara.
...
do I hear Knightwing and Flamebird history coming up.
also it would be nice to see more Supergirl and Powergirl series
As soon as I heard Power Girl saying "Save me!" I can't help hearing "Somebody SAAAAAAAAAAVE me!" from the Smallville theme song.
In terms of PG v SG, I'd have to say PG for her better developed "Pectoral Muscles"(!) - though it would undoubtedly depend whose comic it was in.
Keep going down this Owl House and soon you talk about the Nightwing troop during the Ric Greyson storyline.
I'm not familiar with all of the changes made in the different versions of Ultramarine, but he originally wasn't a counterpart of Superman, he was a Terran who gained powers from kryptonite. If he's still not a version of Kal-El, then the romance isn't quite as creepy.
Make a needle capable of piercing Kryptonian skin ... and you use it to give Supergirl a back tattoo. Clearly the best use of your resources.
It’s a good thing that Rogol Zaar came along to stop this tyranny.😊
Yay! Power Girl content!
I liked these issues loved the art and the fact its Candor
