Snake plant propagation in water (How not to kill snake plant cuttings)

  • Snake plant propagation in water is one of my favorites! You can propagate sansevieria trifasciata through a whole leaf or you can cut a leaf in multiple pieces. The bigger the leaf surface is, the faster it will propagate, so obviously, it's better to propagate a full leaf.
Light and warmth will increase the survival chances of your cuttings. Place them in the brightest window, direct sun is fine. Make sure they the water is not cold, it should be between 24 and 26C for optimal propagation (75-79F).⠀

It can take even 2-3 months to see the first sign of roots, so be patient. I usually see the roots in about 2 months. That's without using a heat mat. With a heat mat you can get roots even as fast as 3 weeks! :)

PRODUCT THAT I USE AND LOVE THAT CAN SPEED UP PROPAGATION (affiliate links):
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - Heat mat (place underneath the propagation vessel to warm it up, can cut propagation time in half)
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - an air pump provides a constant inflow of oxygen which speeds up propagation. Oxygen is crucial for healthy root development
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - humidity dome for soil propagation
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - rooting hormone, for plants that are not easy to propagate
    FERTILIZER
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - Dyna Gro fertilizer, excellent for tropical plants, contains all 16 minerals houseplants need
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - Espoma succulent and cacti fertilizer
    LIGHT METERS
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - Dr. Meter light meter, the only way to know that you're providing your plants with sufficient light
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - Most light meters apps are incorrect, this one has been pre-calibrated for a variety of cell phones
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH NATURAL LIGHT, YOU CAN USE GROW LIGHTS TO SPEED UP PROPAGATION:
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - 60W Sansi grow light (for large plants)
➡️ www.mrhouseplant.com/recommen... - 15W Sansi grow light (for smaller plants)

i am still learning how to propagate my snake plants, but when i propagate my succulents this way, i do this exact method of leaving the bottoms out of the water, this is because when it touches the water it will most likely lead to a root rot. for example i left one hanging too low & came back a few weeks later to it all mushy 😅 the syranwrap, water & sun create a somewhat greenhouse environment and the plant will obtain the water from condensation. that saying i assume this would work the same way with snake plants !

    • @amymay2575
      @amymay2575 ปีที่แล้ว

I can't do it this way I just put them in a shallow dish with just a tiny bit of water in the bottom. My spider plants I do the same way actually use old baby food jars let the leaves hang over and only submerge the very bottom of the roots. Works every time. The snake plant only works about 40% of the time but that's common they don't propagate well.

U can propagate this way but the new plant will be plain dark green leaves it won’t have the yellow variegation like it’s mother plant
To retain the parent variegation you need to divide from the root n propagate to make new plant with same yellow variegation

I do this in soil. I now want to do one in water vs soil and see which one grows faster. I started avacodo seeds in April and started them in water. They sprouted and I left them in that water for 3 months. They grew about 3 inch roots and the sprout wasn't even at the top of the seed. I put them in soil about a month ago and now they are 12-15 inches tall. The growth was super slow in water but soil they grew like crazy.

Hi Lacey :) Experimenting is great! There are several factors that will affect the propagation speed 1) Light 2) propagation medium temperature 3) oxygen. If you increase any of these, propagation will be much faster! :)
Let me know what you find out

    • @goodcitizen3780

The solution to this one is simple. All the hard, boring work was done in the water. You switched them to soil and now the dirt comes out smelling like a rose when it didn't have to do any of the real work.
Jokes aside, many plants root faster in water and they are less likely to get killed rooting in water. Plus it makes the long boring wait more involved and less boring because you get to monitor the progress.

I'm sorry to hear that X.
Even if you do everything right and provide the most optimal conditions, some cuttings will still rot. That’s just nature, we can’t control it 🙂We can only provide the best possible conditions and hope for the best. Now, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of success:
      1) Increasing the warmth of the propagation medium, regardless of whether it's soil or water, by using a heat mat. Increasing the temperature by a few degrees significantly speeds up propagation.
      2) Increasing the amount of light, more light increases photosynthesis and root formation. Either move the cutting to a brighter window or use a grow light. Don’t keep cuttings a few feet away from a window, but right in front of it. And don’t place cuttings behind walls next to a window - but in front of the window
      3) If you're water propagating, use an air pump to constantly provide fresh oxygen to the water. Roots use oxygen and release carbon dioxide. A constant influx of oxygen increases propagation speed. If you’re propagating in soil, mix the soil with perlite to increase macro pores and the amount of oxygen in it.
      Hope this helps 🙂
