I haven't had an issue with melting, but I only keep the iron in place long enough for the glue to activate in the fusible fleece. There can be a smell. I wear a mask if I making multiple boards at one time.

I can’t find the pattern for the modern heart quilt you mention. When I click on the link, it takes you to a 24” sidelock ruler. I tried a number of times, same result.

I am with you there! I do not enjoy applique either! It may be that I need to practice it! There are so many applique patterns I like, but I just don't purchase them because I know they wont look great when I am done! lol.
