In the manga, they fought against "Project 4" a weapons dealer organization that the rebels at first worked with until they joined forces with Area 88 to draw them out, and at the end, the war ended peacefully and they take the idea of changing their country into a Republic Nation what the rebels wanted it as, Shin fought Kanzaki in an air duel and killed him but took shots from him after that Shin reunites with Ryoko and goes home with amnesia forgetting about Area 88 and all he's been through, though his happy memories remain.
This ending... is quite sad when you think about it. He became exactly what he didn't want to become - what Mickey told him not to become. And that expression on his face at the end, I don't see that as happiness, that looks like a tortured soul.
At first I hate it, so unsatisfactory. But then I realized, his story was already over , he became a soldier ready to die for lost cause. I know there is a manga, but for me they all die here, fighting.
When this OVA came out, the Area 88 manga had another year of publishing to go. So the cliffhanger ending allowed for viewers to pick up the manga without having to read what came before and they could pick up the story. Ultimately the Area 88 air force continued the fight thanks to resources from McCoy, but Kanzaki also was given resources to continue the fight by the dark powers funding Aslan's rebellion forces. It all ultimately came to a final conclusion for the two men.
I watch this animation when I was very little, and now, 20 more years passed, happen to come across this on TH-cam, and it was amazing. The storyline of Area 88 is kinda unique to me, feels realistic in some way and unbelievable in another way.

When you do anything for so long, it hurts to leave because it becomes a part of you. Shin became the warrior and killer he swore to not become but at the cost of being satisfied, fulfilled, and loved by his brothers in arms. A truly touching ending

Of course, Washington wanted the Bushwhackers dead or alive, intending to eventually Gatling-gun them all down for treason. I wasn't surprised that, on their last mission for Aslan, the jet jockeys had to fight their way through apparently overwhelming numbers to escape. The only inaccuracy I see with the storyline was the use of the Mikojan-Gurevich-21, a short-legged supersonic jet originally designed as a point-defence interceptor for Soviet airspace, for an offensive, for which the Mikojan-Gurevich-23 and Sukhoi-17 were better suited on grounds of range.

While going to the cafe some men attempt to rob him and Shin nearly beats them to death. At that point he realizes that he is a killer and can never go back to the life he had. He never meets her and instead returns to his comrades and what is probably his death. There are at least three different endings for this series. This is definitely the darkest one.

@lepepelepube the pilot in the ejection seat, earlier in the video, has shoot a parachute man... shin told him that it didn't deserve the rifles... in this scene, just before the end.. when he runs out of ammo.. he probably regrets the spend ammo to killed the parachute man... seconds later his punishment it is completed... ;)
yeah, I was under the impression that most of the guys got away though. Apart from the couple of guys who got shot down straight away, only a hand-ful turned around with Saki.

In the end there is nothing left except Area 88, and the rebels can afford to concentrate all their resources on them. Saki's character is not heavily detailed in this version of the story, so him expecting to be killed for treason is not too far-fetched.
It took them over 20 long years for them to have this released in English. The English dub isn't so bad. But it's a good thing they included both English and Japanese into the two disk DVD release.
You know the saying "Don't start what you can't finish"? Well Shin wants to finish his job at Area 88 so that he can bring closure to this point in his life so he won't have to think about it how it ended but know how it ended.
They fought to the end like true soldiers. But sadly i think Greg Gates, Saki Vashtar, MIckey Simon all died fighting the final battle. And i think Shin Met his end in Aslan. Tragic. But still if i had to fight or flight. I think i would have fought to the very end aswell

It's actually an F-20, an upgraded F-5 w/ better engines , avionics, radar, etc. They say an F-20 Tigershark is 4 times better than an F-5 Freedom, hence the -20 designation. There are other versions of aircraft based on the F-5 Airframe as well, there's a 2 seater trainer (T-20? I believe? Don't quote me on that.) The USAF uses them to train fighter pilots in aerial maneuvering.
If Aslan is gone, is debt to Aslan gone with it? I doubt that. The Central Bankers will somehow still owe that debt, or claim to. But what happens when those armed proclaim themselves debt-free? It is not something that the Central Bankers will like, but it is what I think will happen.

Remember that when Shin took off, you noticed that his Tigershark is fully armed. should they ran out of ammo, they still can escape to the farthest area they can reach with their fuel. and they can eject and survive, unless they get the same fate as the Nguyen guy.

Or did they get so well equipped by sucking up to the USSR that they overwhelmed them? It sounds a bit like the first too as Roundell was told to surrender and I doubt Saki's dad will go too far with his son. If there was a coup it may have been due to the last one a bit. Any thoughts anyone?
In the end Shinwas the only guy too follow Saki's orders to get the hell out of there, but then he had a reason too live on the others like Saki going down fighting may have been the only path left for them in life.

The government surrendered so there is no legitimate reason whatsoever to try and shoot down the enemy planes killing their pilots, but at this point Shin and the others are no longer men, but demons trapped in their own personal hell, which happens to be called Area 88.
The mercenary way is getting paid to do the job. But now, there is nobody left to pay them. No, they are no longer mercenaries, they are something else entirely...

He's suffering from severe PTSD. And the desire to go back to the combat zone is not uncommon among soldiers.
