Reptile Genetics!! Recessive and Incomplete Dominant Explained

- This is my first attempt at trying to explain recessive and incomplete dominance genetics as they apply to reptiles. I'll show a few different boa constrictors and do my best to get you guys on the right track.

Something I think is helpful is to remember that the terms "dominant" and "recessive" are *relative* terms.
If we say "the dumbo gene in rats is recessive" what we really mean is "dumbo is recessive to wild-type". Another way to say the same thing is "wild-type is dominant to dumbo." Wild-type is just the version of the gene we expect to see in the wild.
I use dumbo rats as the example because they are freaking adorable and you should Google them.

Great information, but everytime I watch a video on snake genetics I seem to walk away even more confused

The one thing I struggle with is how "allelic" morphs work together - stuff like the BEL complex in ball pythons. Really happy to see the video notification, I love seeing your boas and enjoy the feel of your videos
I didn't want to get into that in this video is that brings in a hole different variable that is very morphe dependent. I may make another one talking about that but it works along the same lines as an incomplete dominant. Basically there are only two spots that can be taken up. Once those are filled nothing else can go into those locations. Think about it almost like a large parking lot but each row only has two parking spaces.

Would really like to see some videos about the motley gene and what do I need to put together to make some of my own. Love there patterns and just getting into breeding and trying to learn all I can before I start
Motley is incomplete dominant so motley will make more motley.

Thanks! You are so good at this, would you please do a video explaining the terms a lot of the reptile channels toss our way like what the heck is het, het, ressesive, potato chip, shoe? I took biology in high school so I have at least some inkling as to the difference between ressesive and dominant genes are. Some of the terms, especially when they are shortened, make no sense to me and probably less to those who have zero background. I know a lot of it is mostly important to those breeding snakes. To some of us, we'd like to understand a little more about our pets/companions since they will be with us a long time.

What's your recommended style of heating for a boa imperator?
Also what do you think about UVB for boas?
The heating depends on the caging. I use under tank/heat pads for most. You can also use radiant heat panels, but again really depends on the caging.
Uvb is a waste for boas in my opinion and my actually cause damage to their eyes if provided. Because they dont have eyelids the uvb can damage their eyes.

Genetics is a tough subject, took me ages to get my head around, co dominant, dominant and recessive genes.
For me it helped learning about how genetic traits sit on an allele.
Also maybe later cover how two separate genes can act like supers like the paradigm boa :)

I loved this video, I learned so much and you definitely know what you are talking about, I have a question, I have a Female Lipstick Sunglow, and I am expecting a male that is advertised as Motley 100% Het Kahl 50% Het Blood 50% Het Anery, I used the morphmarket calculator, but I want to know if they will make good, pretty babies?

It depends on what you define as good, pretty babies. I will take the results of the Calculator and look up on North market what they look like
I really love every single video that you make. If I breed my fire burm to a pearl burm. What possible result? 50% fire, 25% ivory 25% Normal/pearl/albino?
There is no fire burm but I assume you are talking hypo. Hypo to pearl would give you 50% hypo 25% ivory 25%normal all 100% het albino

You said motley doesnt have a super form but to clarify it does have a super form but the super form babies never live to adulthood if they are born alive at all. It's the same for the jungle gene. Just wanted to say that so someone that just watches this doesn't think it's ok to breed 2 motley together.
Yes that's a good catch. I said a few things in the video incorrectly but for one take not bad Haha. I'm my head I was thinking IMG but I was looking at a motley tag in front of me haha.

Idk if you will see this, seeing that this video is from so long ago. So I have a male Blood Boa thats 66% het Vpi, and a Vpi Sunglow Pink Panther. So its not guaranteed that I get more sunglows breeding these two snakes? So if i want to be 100% sure my Vpi Sunglow creates more sunglows, I'd need to get another Boa thats 100% Vpi correct?

I do not. I try to get around to the local shows to see people but no hard location the people can visit

I honestly use them both interchangeably. I'd love to say that I am strict with that but I am totally not Haha
Isn't this taught in school? Dominant, recessive, co-dominant... That's the genetics 101.
It should be, but for the volume people that don't understand that I'm assuming it isn't.

@@Random-Saurus I live in the US I was taught Genetics and punnett squares in middle school and again high school so this should be something everyone from the 90's and onward SHOULD know. Can't speak for anything older than me
It's standard in science classes, but nobody remembers for some reason. We all did algebra in 7th grade, but most people couldn't solve a quadratic equation to save their life.
