Today we have one of the most successful businessmen in India. We have Kishore Biyani in conversation with Raj Shamani. He had a net worth of $1.78 billion. He is the founder of some of our most loved brands Pantaloon and Big Bazaar.
In today’s episode, we will dive deep into Kishore Biyani’s stories, ideas, and observations that led to such successful businesses. We talked about the young days that shaped him into such a brilliant person. The habits we can inculcate to become exceptionally great at what we do. He shares an interesting story and breakdown of how he started Pantaloon and Big Bazaar. He talks about how to spot new trends, and how to include them and scale the business. We talked about different brand-building strategies used while building a brand for different consumer segments.
Towards the end, he also shared which cities in India fascinate him and the reasons behind them. He explains the difference between how the Indian market and consumption pattern has changed over the years. I also asked him two things that he would change if he had a chance to start everything from scratch and his answer was quite different from what I expected. This episode was one of those episodes where I was constantly surprised by the detailed observations he was sharing about business, market, and consumer behaviour. If you are a budding entrepreneur then this episode will give you a new perspective to look at business.

Good insights. Me being a retailer in Bangalore managing supermarkets for last 15 odd years , we are also Ina similar situation were operating profits are too low and survival without proper funds is a big challenge.. e-commerce , d-marts,,, always feel there should be some regulations on pricings which help retailers like us also survive in this market…if you can bring in someone who can throw some insights into these challenges would be great… when we astarted our operations back in 1990s there were hardly any self service outlets.. but if we have to do something now we have to do it really big, for that funding is a big challenge .

Just remember one thing. Every product has a life cycle and every business also has a life cycle. Along with that Markets keep evolving. So if anyone has to survive or grow in the market, these factors cannot be ignored. Whichever company or business entity it may be. They cannot escape this.

Self-starter,gives out gem. One question I would like him to answer is 1. How do you ensure loyalty of your employees,2. Of your suppliers 3. His banking approach 4. How to understand money ? Is he going to start big bazar again ? It was called huge best brand started by a man of ideas... Thank you Raj Shamami

Abdul Kalam used to say ...Don't study success stories..Study the failures .. You can learn a lot.
My Questions to such people would be ...
    1. What is the importance of clarity of thoughts... Did he meditate etc ?
    2. Time Management and Prioritisation tips ?
    3. Did he employ people with employee mindset or entrepreneurial mindset ?
    4. Did he do risk assessment and envisaged the risk of going out of business when he leveraged his business ?
    5. Who were his role models ? Or what was his aspiration ?

Got to learn so much!!! I have a few recommendation questions for any guest you are bringing - can be applied to all -
What are the 5 most imp skills/traits to have/learn in todays times in the business world or even for any corporate job or in general?
What are the 5 books one should definitely read?
What was your biggest downfall - how did u handle it and what did u learn from it? Or what mistakes u made ? (Like you asked in this episode)

Kishore Sirji, iam into the sports goods business since 15 years and have sourced many brand products of Wilson, Spalding, from your future distribution for my store. I feel that my 15 years of experience will not match your 54 minutes of this interview. I have learned a lot in the last 1 hr than all the 15 years put together. You were and will always be an inspiration to me. This interview felt like I am sitting with my guru giving out small tips and tricks. From today on i am watching every episode of this pod cast

Wow I mean this man is a treasure of knowledge. I hope I can create something with him as an advisor. And his point about VC is so true. Firstly the funding goes to foreign graduates then to IIT’s and till the time it's done there is nothing left. Soon with abundance in purchasing power each state will have its own VC Fund who will find gems in the local universities and create huge businesses

Kishore Biyani is a pioneer of Retail and he was ahead of time in terms of setting up Huge Pentaloons ( I have been to HYD Pantaloon in 98/99), Big format stores, malls, creating a Bazar atmosphere, BIG day discount shows etc. Somewhere he went overboard in terms of scale/stretch( he himself humbly agrees). Very sad to see him selling of his jewels and shutting himself out. It didn't well interms of getting torn between Amazon and RIL. Great to see his passion, keen observations and thoughtful initiatives. I know he is past his prime years, However I hope and wish he comes back in some form of business. Excellent discussion, gracefully conducted. Congrats Raj. You are doing great services to business community, founders and aspiring founders

Amazing video Raj, I just feel that asking such experts about how they built their team and what challenges they faced in the initial team building face will be helpful , The role of the founders, the team departments, how the team members had different roles etc, Cuz its not just one person who makes a company successful, so we would love to know more about what actually happens inside the office and the people/ work management, hope this makes sense, Thanks

    1) ask them if there is a bribe/favour etc also in business
2)why few businesses are not in Rural or semi urban cities
3)any political effect or any particular state , religion etc impact the business and what is the solution or win win situation.
4)why our India not become on 5 trl or more economy, what is the reason and solution for that .
    5) how our health/education/lawn order improve and in a fast n effective manner
