    Welcome to a special exhibition match of Madness Season 4: Best GameCube Games! We're trying to decide not only what are the best games that released on the Nintendo GameCube, but which is THE best game on the GCN. In this episode it's two powerhouses of Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda Four Swords Adventures vs Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, but who will win?
    In this season we have one guest:
    Spacehamster of PB and Jeff : bit.ly/2ssNHAV
    Madness is a discussion/debate show where we decide what we think is best in any given category of video games, movies, food or anything else. We make a tournament style bracket, and the winning subject of each discussion goes onto the next round until we find a winner.

    I cannot believe Jared said the argument about having 1 GameCube, 4 cables, and 4 GBAs was a dumb argument, it was a legitimate problem! None of my friends had a gba, so I never played crystal chronicles multiplayer and got sick of it single player and I never even played four swords, i can’t be the only one Nintendo failed by making it too hard to play these games!!!

    Usually I finish the video before commenting, but I have to say, 100% agree with Jared about the undeserved criticism over needing for GameBoy Advances. Ideally, everyone would just have their own! Sure my friends and I always brought our own controllers anyways! But Nintendo never expected everyone to go get four GBAs and four link cables for this. And I'm so glad someone here said this.

    • @WarpedFlayme
      @WarpedFlayme 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And part of the memory aspect of FFCC is that you bring your character on your memory card so you can take your memories back home. You can make progress in single and multi-player and aren't limited to always playing on one console with the same people!

    • @kryzethx
      @kryzethx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The key word here is "ideally". Sure, "ideally", everyone has their own Gamecube and GBA and link cables and can just bring it over.
      But over here in reality, not everybody had a Gameboy Advance, and even less people had Gamecubes. I mean, there are literally 4x as many GBAs sold as there were Gamecubes, so it's factually impossible for everyone to have one of each. Maybe in the rich white kid's neighborhoods, everybody there had one of each, but that's not the way it was everywhere else.
      It's way easier for one person to have a Gamecube, and 4 controllers, and just play some Smash or Mario Kart or Mario Party, or any other multiplayer game; than it is for 4 people to have a Gameboy Advance and a link cable each (and one Gamecube between them). It's a well deserved point against both of these games, and is definitely the reason neither of them made the bracket.

    • @Matthordika
      @Matthordika 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Reyes But that’s why neither game required four players total. The argument people bring up though is that you would need four GBAs, as if one person was expected to have four lying around.
      And it is unfortunate that not everyone can afford everything, but that’s a whole other conversation.

    • @kryzethx
      @kryzethx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Matthordika Well for Crystal Chronicles, there's really no point in playing 2 player, over just playing single player (or a different game) since one person pretty much would always have to carry the chalice, while the other person does most of the combat. This is especially noticeable during boss battles, where the enemy can move the chalice around when it's on the ground.
      As for Four Swords, the more the merrier, so having less people is less fun. 2 players is doable, but the games really shine, just like British guy said, they really shine when you have the full setup of 4 players.
      Nowadays, maybe that's less of an issue. I actually bought 4 GBA's and link cables, specifically to play these games back in college, and it was fun as hell. Worth it to me, but maybe not worth it to most people, especially back then.
      And that's a real detriment to the game's popularity.

    I honestly feel like the ability to go around and do your own thing in four swords is more of a positive for it. • @pikmints
    @pikmints 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the main reason these games didn't make it was because the link cable as such a rare peripheral for people to want. I loved it in games like Animal Crossing and Billy Hatcher, but so few games worked with it, and those that owned those games may not even know about the peripheral.
    Crystal Chronicles is an insanely awesome game with a spectacular soundtrack, stunning visuals, depth and resource management. Not to dis Four Swords, but a faster, simplified game doesn't quite compare.
    Also, fact checking here: Crystal Chronicles' enemies scale with the amount of players you have, so single player is still reasonable in term of difficulty. You can combine spells in single player. I legit played that game tons in just single player, but it's probably because I loved the adventure aspect so much.

    These games both bring back so many great memories for me! I loved playing 4 swords, but if I had the choice, I would play CC with some friends any day. I think they should have mentioned how great CC is to play co op compared to Diablo or Champions of Norrath and the like. Having the management on the gameboy screen meant that you didnt have to wait forever for everyone to take their turn in the menus and stop the gameplay to do all the item management. This is a huge plus for me.
    Also, Everyone had their own map, one person had the layout, one person had an enemy radar, one person had a map of the treasure chests etc. This really went along with the theme of cooperative gameplay in CC. I think it was much more innovative and in line with the game than it was given credit in this discussion.
    I know they mentioned the chalice as a negative, but I thought it solved a problem in a clever way, and created another strategic element in the game. Having to manage the chalice was a team thing, but also when fighting a boss, you had to be careful about keeping your safe zone in an advantageous spot. But more importantly, the problem of everyone running off in their own direction was solved. You could still run off on your own, but you would die before you got too far. This also gave incentive to be the person carrying the chalice, because although you had a bit of a chore to do, you got to decide where you were going. Crystal Chronicles is a fantastic game, but a huge part of why it was so great isnt even noticed. They got rid of so many little issues with co op dungeon crawlers, and allowed 4 friends to have an uninhibited adventure. And a really fun one at that!

    A couple minor points I disagree with on crystal chronicles: You don't need four people for the full experience. I feel like it's just as good with 2 or 3 people, and it's a little easier to get 2 or 3 people than 4. Also it's still a fun game to play by yourself. It's not as bad as they're making it out to be.
    I played a significant amount with 4 people and by myself when this game first came out but didn't beat it. Then, years later, my sister was playing it and I tagged along with her as she was getting to the end game. I transferred one of my old characters to her file (which is super cool that you can do that,) and we had a blast figuring out what you had to do to get to the end area and beat the game. Love this game, so many great memories.

    • @kryzethx
      @kryzethx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm gonna have to disagree on 2 people being just as good as 3 or 4, or even solo. With one player, you have the Moogle to carry around the chalice for you, and you get to just run around willy nilly, without worrying about it too much. With 3 or 4 players, you can have 1 player carry the chalice for most of the time, and the other 2/3 can continue fighting and doing actual multiplayer things. With 2 people, one person has to manage the chalice, and the other person is basically playing single player.
      Maybe it's just me, because when I played with 2 people, against that damn Marlboro that constantly pulls the chalice in, one of us would always have to stop fighting and pull it away, while the other continued fighting. And that someone was usually me. It's faster with 1 player, or 3/4 players, but not 2 players

    This was a really close match. There's a lot of good points for both games, and lots of good arguments of those points. Very nice episode, and as a bonus, my personal favorite won. I wouldn't have been too miffed if Zelda won, since it's nice to just sit back, relax, and play a little Four Swords for an couple hours. Crystal Chronicles is much more of an investment, at least if you want the full experience. But definitely the meatier game. Very fun to watch!

      Yeah I feel like the formula is fine. I would be interested in either a single elimination 16 entrant bracket or an 8 entrant full double elimination. Or maybe just a 12 entrant bracket with byes. Basically not a huge fan of the 3s, but I’m sure y’all considered the alternatives and have your reasonings. As viewers we don’t have access to the same data that y’all do, so maybe the 3s are hugely popular.
      Anyways, love the show!

    • @ForrestFurst
      @ForrestFurst 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justwantawholename We decided against Double Elimination immedaitely because we'd risk repeating the same match ups, and to be honest, a lot of the time, we struggle to fill a single episode's worth lol
      We don't want a Single Elimination 16 entrant tournament because we want to be able to talk about a game more than once.

    1:20 It's a legitimate argument. I mean, I had a Gamecube, but I didn't have a Gameboy Advance as a kid. My friend had a Gameboy Advance, but didn't have a Gamecube. Neither of us had link cables, soo... I mean, the Gamecube didn't really sell as well as Jared seems to think. The Gameboy Advance itself sold insanely well (as all Nintendo handhelds do), but nobody would have a link cable if they didn't have a Gamecube. There were literally 4 times as many GBA's as there were GC's sold.
    Regardless, these games are great, just annoyingly difficult to set up. Not only buying the things, but also just crowding 4 people around a TV with a link cable that isn't all that long, and using battery powered devices that can't (normally) be charged while playing said game. I'll say that multiplayer Four Swords was a fun experience, full of aggression against friends, and wanton destruction; whereas multiplayer Crystal Chronicles was an amazing story-based experience that you could spend hours into.
    Four Swords is like candy, and Crystal Chronicles is a steak. Sometimes you just want candy. Sometimes you don't have time to cut into a thick piece of steak, and sometimes you never even get to finish it, because your knife and fork friends went away and never came back to play Crystal Chronicles \*sniffle*.

    I don't know if many people realize this, but you can fuse your own spells in Crystal Chronicles single player in the inventory menu. In CC you could use the secret mission in a co op way, when I played with friends we all told each other our mission, so, if the healer got a very shitty "don't heal others" or stuff like that we would go out of the level and re enter to change it, then we would all co operate to get good points, here's the thing, you also needed a set amount of points to get better overall rewards at the end, so, if everyone helped each other instead of plotting, you could all go out with a neat reward at the end, specially good if you wanted to give the designated healer stuff like the cure or life ring, the latter one being in one of the harder levels of the game. While in FSA it did not matter AFAIK, since you did not keep your stats and items at the end of a level.

    I do like that argument, which was asked more for a remake. Well, let me tell you this: I still have a group of friends who is looking into it to be able to play Four Swords in one sitting, all levels, and see who is the best.
    But honestly? I just want the Switch to use their multiplayer to split screen games like this. Coming together, each with their own switch, and just playing a game for good times. Or even over the internet.
    Get on it Nintendo!!
    Good video, I love Zelda, but Crystal Chronicles kind of stuck with me just as much.

    How forgettable is Four Swords Adventures you ask? It's actually a sequel to a game called Four Swords that came out with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Game Boy Advance.
    I don't think people are aware that there are two separate games, where Four Swords Adventures is a GameCube game and Four Swords is just on Game Boy.

    My only issue with FSA growing up was that the GBA game by a similar name (Four Swords, which happened to come with LttP) actually REQUIRED a GBA to GBA link cable and two friends with the game. I wanted to play the GameCube version SO BAD, but I had NO IDEA until after we got it that the whole time, we could have played it with no copies of the GBA game, and even just 1 GBA hooked up and the other person (only ever did 2 player) could just use the remote. ALSO NO IDEA it was single player, since I thought it would be like the GBA game that required 2 people+ to play!

    As an avid LoZ: Four Swords supporter, its time to do my gamer rant about how that game is actually better than Crystal Chronicles.
    Righr off the bat, i disagree in saying that CC is a better four player experience than Four Swords. Im genuinly shocked to hear them say the chaos in Four Swords is a downside. Its one of the things i love most about the game. It perfectly mixes having to work as a team and then throwing your friend off a cliff the next second. I love that its kind of encouraged to screw around with your friends rather than it just be a coop experience. Its the mix of a vs and coop game that really makes it interesting and unique. Also, having everyone to themselves makes it a more casual playing experience, and also, Four Swords is waaaaay more pick up and play than Chrystal Chronicles. Not saying CC is bad mechanically, but if you went to the effort of finding 4 people to play with 4 GBAs, you just kinda want to play and not risk people getting bored of all the mechanics before the game really gets going (this happened when i played CC). And they didnt even MENTION the side games in Four Swords. All the main story minigames are silly fun, and Shadow Battle is insanely fun and ive spent so many hours playing it. For me, Four Swords is no question the better playing experience. A more story and mechanical game (like CC) i prefer to play single player so i can pace myself with the story and not be afraid of falling behind on getting a mechanic slower than someone else. When i play with friends (which doesnt happen very often), i want me and everyone to be able to quickly learn the game and be able to have fun, and Four Swords is the perfect example of easy to pick up chaotic coop fun. Four Swords is honestly my favorite multiplayer game of all time, and my second favorite game of all time (hence why i felt the need to write all this lol). Ive had insane fun every single time ive played it.
    Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

    Four Swords Adventures having a mishmash of artstyles kind of becomes its own thing to me. You've got Link To The Past assets, Minish Cap stuff, Wind Waker sounds...I can see the criticism, but I think it becomes an interesting celebration of different Zelda things. The thing that did bug me about 4SA is how easy it is once they give you so many lives (in the form of Force Fairies). Dying doesn't even make you have to start over, you just get revived with some hearts. You can stock up to almost 100 fairies and you get them every level. How hard can a Zelda game be when you're effectively walking around with 150+ hearts at all times? You should have only been able to carry one or maybe a few fairies at a time and only find them in unique hiding spots. Normal Zelda only gives you fairies in unique spots and you can only hold a few, so I think this one should have done that.
    Also, people keep asking for Madness about bad games and I really want to see them crown the worst game between two or more of them.

    • @luliby2309
      @luliby2309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and you could make it so that extra force fairies you find give you force gems so that they aren't just totally useless. Maybe have some extra rewards for getting a lot of gems besides loads of fairies.

My brother is likely going to be getting a Switch just for that when they put out a release date. Does that speak for quality? Not necessarily. But Four Swords lack that unique type of cooperative gameplay Crystal Chronicles had. There is nothing quite like it, even within the same genre of action-adventure games.

If you’re working with a good party, you can all look at your options and decide what everyone wants. You can also do things like rock, paper, scissors or do dice rolls to decide who gets what. I never really had an issue with it.

    Oi Jared I think the criticism is probably deserved, considering it limits the way the game was intended to be played unnecessarily. Ideally everyone would be able to play with either GameCube controller or gameboy. It's just poor business.

    • @laynelaynelaynelaynelayne
      @laynelaynelaynelaynelayne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it doesn't "limit" the way the game was supposed to be played, it limits the audience. It was a creative idea that could only be done with that technology, and Nintendo took the risk to innovate. Just because that means not as many people experienced it doesn't make it bad. That's like saying selling games on the WIIU was "bad business" and a negative because the console sold poorly and therefore had a small reach.

    • @kryzethx
      @kryzethx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, it's kind of understandable for both games; in Crystal Chronicles, they wanted to make it so each player could shift through their menu's without interrupting the main gameplay. So in a tense battle, one player could be digging around for an item they might need suddenly, while the rest can continue distracting, battle, moving around and stuff. Without separate screens, you'd lose part of the screen when going into the menus, or worse.. pausing the action.
      And in Four Swords, they wanted each player to be able to go off on their own, within the caves/dungeons. I suppose for Four Swords, they could have just designed the game differently, so it relied more on the overworld, and less on the caves, but that would have made it a little less Zelda... it's a trade off they chose to make.
