The best location for PUFFINS in the UK? (Bempton Cliffs)

  • This week, we're in Yorkshire, and visiting a place that has been on Claire's bucket-list for a very long time - Bempton Cliffs. Described as a sea bird city, hundreds of thousands of gannets, razorbills and guillemots return every year here to breed. But today, we're hoping to spot the elusive (and super cute) puffin.

WOW I am sweating just watching Claire sitting on the edge of that cliff, and that is one hell of a drop....I have only looked up at Bempton Cliffs from The Yorkshire Bell boat and that took 25 years off my life....BUT WOW What some Fantastic pictures & ineradicable views of our GREAT YORKSHIRE COAST TOP VIDEO....

That’s very kind of you! We were unlucky not to spot puffins, there are hundreds of them now. Thank you for commenting and we hope you enjoy our other videos in the Yorkshire mini series (and further afield!)

Puffins sometimes fly over Cardigan Island on their way to Skomer Island, which is 30 miles further south. However ,the best wildlife to view from Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park 200 metres onshore from Cardigan Island are :-
[a] Atlantic Grey Seals which breed in the caves below the Farm Park cliffs.
[b] Bottle-nosed dolphins which chase salmon and sewin [sea trout] into the River Teifi estuary , which is just below the Farm Park cliffs.
[c] Rare choughs , which are red-legged members of the crow family, with orange beaks. They are very rare in most of the UK.
[d] Buzzards, Red Kites, Peregrine Falcons, , Sparrow-Hawks and Kestrels....all fly around here.
Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park is on the southern corner of the county of Ceredigion, West Wales. Cardigan Island itself, is just 200 to 250 metres offshore. The River Teifi estuary is next to the island, with the beautiful, large sandy beach of Poppit Sands, just across the estuary in Pembrokeshire!
Check out photos of Mwnt beach and Aberporth online.........stunning sandy beaches surround by attractive Ordovician Slate cliffs. They are only 2 and 5 miles from Cardigan Island.
The sunsets over Cardigan Bay from the camp-site at Cardigan Island Farm Park.......are absolutely stunning!

Flamborough South Landing just a few miles away is the best place to see Puffins, Bempton it can be difficult though I think you are unlucky as I've been half a dozen times and got photos with just a pocket camera . South Landing I think it was June or July and I was blown away, I wish I could show you my photos from my little Canon pocket camera also there were loads of seals there. Never been to Spurn it's out of my way as I don't have a car, it's a great shame as I live in Hull not far away.

Nice photography. I'm planning on going to Bempton in March and later on in the year primarily for the puffins, but of course the other birds too. There is another place where you can find pufins a little further down the coast, and I'm hopefull I'll be able to go there. I just hope my 100-400mm will be suitable. The last time I went to Bempton was around 25 years ago and the RSPB weren't there. It was just a car park and a path leading to the cliff. I remember buying a hat and have just replaced it at Christmas.

Thanks for watching, Brampton is an amazing place for bird life even if you don't see the puffins. I'm sure your 100-400mm will get you some great shots! Hope you have a bit more luck with the Puffins than we did! Enjoy your trip :)

You really should have got the Puffin in the car park if it was that close to you, I managed to get an Oystercatcher wandering around Mcdonald's car park in Great Yarmouth last year haven't got that close to one since but at least I got it with a good amount of detail. :)

    • @StephenandClaire
      @StephenandClaire  ปีที่แล้ว +1

There has been a huge increase in the numbers of puffins at Bempton since we visited. We were just unlucky in being slightly too early for the season. By the time you visit in May, they should be well underway nesting. Do let us know how you get on spotting them and thank you for watching our video 😊

Claire is already planning a trip to Skomer island. Apparently, you can pretty much walk right up to their nests, and you don't have to peer over a cliff to stand a chance of spotting them. They're dotted around all over the place. When that happens, we'll be sure to make a follow up video - hopefully this time we do actually spot some. Thank you for your kind words.

Great Vlog guys, number of puffins have been good this year so far, between 4-5 thousand counted, but if you want to see Puffins close up and in large numbers get yourself to Skomer in South Wales, it’s fantastic, over 45.000 puffins this year.

It is probably one of the worst places in the UK to photograph Puffins. Four hours last week and I saw one, five years ago I paid to go on a RSPB Puffin Walk at Bempton and we didn't see one. You would have been better walking down to Flamborough. The Farne Islands in Northumberland, Lungi Island is Scotland, Skomer Island in Wales are the places to go for great Puffin photography. However nowhere can beat Bempton for Gannets
