Idk about other people but I’m not mad that they’re themed I’m just mad that they look cheap and bad and they don’t suit the characters. If they were trying to make them look like characters in a play they should have made those characters more cohesive so they looked like a set, and if they are trying to make them look like characters from a specific story they communicated that poorly in the design, especially with Rui looking like he is in a completely different play. Your point still stands but the designers should have done a better job.
Good point that they’re suppose to be based on children stories but i still stand think that they could’ve made them more whimsical and still stick to the children stories theme. Ex. Emu tinkerbell outfit could’ve had sparkles or frills on the top instead of being literally a plain white t-shirt
honestly for WxS I'm holding out for the fact it might be a scene-specific costume, like instead of making an outfit to fit all their plays, the movie is only going to show one play so the costumes are meant to fit that. No idea why Rumi doesn't match them in that case though 😂
also a thought, maybe the complexity of the costumes is inversely related to how actively the characters move? The more detailed costumes seem to be for the ones more likely to just stand still, while the ones who are more likely to be flying all over the place with cool dance moves or just hyperactivity are the ones with simpler outfits. Standing still takes a lot less work to animate so they can get away with more detailed outfits, since all the budget for animation isn't being put into all the details of the highly mobile characters. Not a great excuse, just a perspective from someone who used to work for animation, unless that was all puppeted those details would be a nightmare to animate on VBS or WxS 😂

Shiho's design kinda tends to stick to her strong girl personality or boyish. • More More Jump is normal, just the usual idol stage outfit. • Vivid Bad Squad street style fashion is on point as that's their actual imagery for street style performers. • Wonderlands×Showtime designs suggests there's going to be some sort of a stage play with different characters co-existing together. Like how Tsukasa may look like a pirate or a prince, Emu looks to be a fairy with her wings, Nene is sort of a dancer / entertainer, Rui sort of a magician or something judging by his clothing. • Nightcord at 25:00 is normal too. It just stays true to their image as an underground music group or their dark, sad music style or personality.

Also when I mean base them off of cards I mean like a deck of cards, my reason for why this ties to the WxS main story are as followed. In the main story and countless times in general, Tsukasa is shown as the egotistical king or leader and even in the journey to bloom animation, Tsukasa was indeed dressed as a king, so he should be the king. Emu is often stated from the original story that made WxS who they are as the “eccentric clown” and so Emu should be the jester card because jesters are basically clowns from medieval age. Nene doesn’t really have a title in the “traveling theater troupe story” but she does have the world link card that portrays her as a queen as well as that scene in Space Opera where Tsukasa is kneeling towards Nene which gives off so many princess vibes for me personally that I think Nene should be dressed like the queen card in the deck And lastly Rui is a wizard as not only it fits with his role as the alchemist but also alchemist starts with the letter A which an A represents the Ace or the most powerful card in the card game. Rui is directly started to have the most connection to the traveling theater troupe story as well as him being the director with many abilities and smarts makes him a very POWERFUL asset to their group and thus he is the most suited to be the wizard representing the Ace card
btw, as an animator, ruis outfit would be an absolute PAIN to animate. patterns suck ass to animate so i have no clue why they made him so complicated???
i think the only thing i didn't like abt ena's is how light (ik it's her color but i feel like it could've been a bit darker/more brown less yellow) her underskirt is, so it stands out like stripes with the overskirt.
Rui's is actually amazing and i think its my favorite main design out of the three, but maybe thats just me. As a Rui and Shizuku enjoyer, im very happy that they both turned out well.

MMJ easily has the best designs here in my opinion, no wonder Emu recently had an event called Wonderhorror when you take a look at some of those costume choices WXS has…
The clothes of all the units, for me, are so lacking in personality. It was cool that even without knowing the history of each one you had a certain idea of what each design was trying to convey. I think the best of them is Leo Need, MMJ, along with Kohane and Mizuki. WxS is now just Showtime, The bad dogs boys look like condominium burglars and N25 is sadness black with the character's depression color.
Okay so with wxs i was like "well they have to make it easier to animate so I'll let it slide I guess" and then RUI shows up and HOW THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE ANIMATED
