Touhou has garnered an absolutely massive collection of fan content. When it comes to music there are over 110,000 fan arrangements of Touhou songs from over 2100 different groups spanning pretty much every genre you can think of. On top of music there are tons of fanmade art, games, animations and manga. All thanks to the creator, ZUN's, extremely lenient copyright that allows fans to create some truly amazing fanworks.
ZUN's attitude towards copyright is precisely what allows for communities to grow and flourish. It's similarly why, obviously to a lesser extent, others like Valve and Hirohiko Araki have creating decade-lasting communities as well.

It basically paved the way for vtubing. 2. Touhou has an absolutely insane fandom that produces mountains of fan games, merch, comics, animation, and music. There are entire professional musical group dedicated to remixing and/or rearranging the game's music into every genre under the sun. This song is a vocal arrangement of one of the early boss themes. 3. This video is probably the most notable fan animation and is basically a collage of characters from the first three Windows games (plus a couple older ones). It represents a mere fraction of the number of Touhou characters that there are.
Believe it or not, Touhou is not known for difficulty. People say it's difficult, but Zun's main focus is creating beautiful (but always dodgeable) patterns with Danmaku. Lots of other shmups are made to eat quarters and expect you to bomb when things get difficult. But in Touhou everything is made carefully to be dodgeable in some way, so if you want you can challenge yourself to play without getting hit a single time or using a single bomb. That's part of what makes it special from other bullet hells. You can play the whole game without a single hit or using a single bomb if you try insanely hard and learn, even on Lunatic. That being said , if you challenge yourself to do things like no bomb, no hit, all those other things, then Touhou can be more difficult to beat than quarter eaters with dying and bombing (Because quarter eaters almost always actually require deaths and bombs to win with 1cc no matter how much you practice)

Just know if you ever check it out, his music sounds nothing like what you heard here. Dark fact about this song is about suicide. This MMD is meant to represent all the characters from Touhou from all games. Is inspired by japanese folklore, mythos and old religion such as vampires, youkai, witches and more. However, most of the time is filled by the fans with the intrepertations, IRL inspirations and headcanons. This is barely scratching the surface of this world.
Touhou has been around for so long with do many great songs that you probably could ask a hundred different fans for one song and get a hundred different recommendations. Maybe not that many. Some have lyrics and some don't but pretty much everything is good.
Touhou is like the biggest secret of the internet. It’s easy to know nothing about it. But once you finally do learn what it is, you realize it’s been everywhere the entire time and you just didn’t know.
The Touhou franchise is a really old one that stretches for more than a decade. The first time I knew about it was roughly around my secondary school days I think. It's rather tough explaining the phenomena out it all via a comment, so I'd suggest looking up some Touhou explained/introduction vids on TH-cam. Another alternative would be dedicating a live stream for Touhou so those amongst the audience in the know can recommend the best vids to help expand your knowledge of the franchise.
Bad Apple is a classic! I do believe this MV is animated with MMD. I don't know a ton about Touhou, but I'll say what I do know. Touhou started off as a series of Jp only indie games, mostly consisting of bullet hells. Some of the more recent Touhou games have been localized outside of Jp now. All I really know about the plot is that it follows the shrine maiden Reimu (the first and last girl seen in this MV) as she deals with spiritual and supernatual people usually causing trouble.

@@velocityofclan interesting thing to point out is that although the story is revolving around reimu, we rarely or never get the story from her perspective hence reimu seems to change personality every story because peoples perpective on her changes depending on who they are.
As far as I'm aware, the reason why it looks the way it does is that it was originally done with cardboard cut-outs. After that, it blew up and was all over the news so more and more people began working on how it looked, basically editing bits and pieces till you get what you have now. EDIT: Just FYI, I remember seeing all this on the news when it happened. It's essentially one of the first 3-5 internet memes that gained global attention. Even before Hamster Dance.

Here's something I posted on another video You should check out the Bad Apple Animation that was done on r/place this year. The Touhou fandom is a bunch of fucking mad lads to be able to manage that. For starters, Touhou is a series of Bullet Hells made by one guy. It started in 1996 on a Japanese Computer called the PC98 and was developed for that computer for the first 5 installments. The series was just something small made by the creator and sold at a Doujin event called Comiket. Basically where a bunch of indie creators sell their stuff. It wasn't until 2002 when the 6th game in the series (developed for Windows) did the series take off, in large part due to the music. UN Owen was Her? is pretty much THE song that skyrocketed Touhou's popularity in the early and mid 2000's. It's not the only thing that spring boarded it's popularity, the creator's lax licensing requirements also played a huge part. He's very open to keeping the 'Doujin spirit' of the franchise intact which allows creators to almost effectively use the IP for free so long as they follow his guidelines. This leads to the songs from games being remixed on a near constant basis. in 2015, there was a repository of a vast amount of Fanmade Touhou songs that totaled about 1.35 Terabytes in compressed formats. Since the release of the 6th entry, Touhou's popularity exploded in JP and has even had a noticeable impact in the west. Just as an example, Touhou is a massive influence for Toby Fox and Undertale has quite a few nods to the series. Now, The Bad Apple animation has quite an impressive history all to itself, especially because it's pretty much a perfect representation of what Touhou is about as a Doujin Series. The original Song, Bad Apple, is from the 4th entry in the series, Lotus Land Story in 1998. The song in the animation PV you watched was released in 2007. Following that a user on niconico (basically japanese TH-cam) uploaded a story board for what would eventually become the Bad Apple PV you just watched. He requested somebody to animate it to that version of the song. The niconico community took to the challenge and various iterations based on the story board were uploaded. Then, in 2009, this animation was finally uploaded and became an instant hit. You'd think that's where the story ends, but it's not. True to Touhou's roots, the Bad Apple animation has become a monolith of Touhou's doujin spirit. Bad Apple has been reimagined with 3D models, AI generation, through stop motion and the list goes on. But not only that, it has also become iconic in porting to various other pieces of technology from Gameboy, NES, Calculators, oscilloscopes and, as I mentioned above, r/place. Basically, if there's a screen, then it can play Bad Apple. While it's not really touched upon much, but I feel this PV is also an incredible example on why great character design matters. Even though you only see their silhouettes, you can clearly tell the difference between them and snippets of their personalities. Touhou is a veritable treasure trove of amazing music. You won't be disappointed with more reactions to the music as they are damn good. Some of my personal favorites are UN Owen was Her?, Kobito of the Shining Needle and Candid Friend.

the music video is made with MMD (Miku Miku Dance), a free 3d animation software usually used for making vocaloid dance music videos. at the time this came out, MMD had an unfortunate reputation of looking cheap (though that has certainly changed since). the black and white silhouette style of the video made MMD look elegant and professional like people hadnt seen before, and inspired people to get more creative with things like colour and lighting effects
@@velocityofcl Well, if you want to get into the games themselves, I personally recommend starting with fighting games, since bullet hells tend to be somewhat intimidating. There's also plenty of high quality fangames as well, like Luna Nights or Scarlet Curiosity, which are separate genres entirely. In terms of videos, I *highly* recommend minusT's channel. His 3D works encapsulate the spirit of Touhou series the most and videos are well worth reacting to. Fandom creations are heart and soul of the series, just like Bad Apple (which is a remix of the Touhou 4 stage 4 theme, btw). ^ ^

Touhou is a series of Curtain Fire games known for specially focusing on beautiful dodgeable patterns matched with accompanying music (sometimes even synced to the patterns) The games have created crazy stories full of beloved characters. But im certain the comments have already told you all that. They probably also mentioned the insane content this community has made through the years. What might be unique in my comment is that i recommend you check out the animations of "Minus-T " Minus-T creates beautiful 3d animated fight sequences accompanied by Touhou music that match the in-game patterns.... It's honestly some of the most beautiful stuff I've ever seen.. I highly recommend checking out all of "Minus-T"s stuff...
As I mentioned on a different reaction channel, the Hololive rabbit hole's got NOTHING on Touhou Project. The important thing to know is that there's a lot of fan music remixing music from the games (Bad Apple itself is the stage 3 music from the 4th game, which hails all the way back in the PC98 era. The silhouettes shown in this MV are from characters who are mostly from the Windows era up until the most recent one back when this song was made (so... game 6 to game 10, including the fighting game spinoffs), so yeah, you're really not gonna recognize anyone here unless you're deep enough into the rabbit hole. Toby Fox snuck in a few Touhou references into Undertale as well, so you might even recognize something by osmosis.

"What is Touhou about?" I'M GLAD YOU ASKED! Touhou Project is a very long running series of bullet hell games (almost) all made by a single person who goes by "ZUN". It takes place in Gensokyo (meaning Land of Fantasy), a mystical realm in Japan that was cut away from our modern world. All the fantastical beings we no longer believe in live there which mostly consist of Japanese youkai but also includes western fairies and vampires as well. Bad Apple is a sort of celebration of Touhou up till the point it came out. It features characters from Touhou 6 (which is when the modern canon started) to Touhou 10. For a point of comparison, we're up to Touhou 19 now. Touhou is famous for its unique soundtracks the likes of which you'll never hear. Bad Apple itself is based on a stage theme from Touhou 4 though it's not all that similar besides the start. If you'd ask me what the appeal of the series was I'd have a few answers. The setting itself is very carefree and mystical, the characters are often clever reimaginings of creatures of myth and well... just listen to some of the soundtrack.
Touhou for being a STG an oft drunk programmer did (it's gone a degree more commercial) has/had quite a fan scene (15 years ago or so it was all the rage before Hololive/Genshin/etc among net nerds) The MV doesn't make much more sense with context. I advise against going down this rabbit hole as you may uncover twisted things (likely why ZUN's gotten so retcon happy)
I know that isn't exactly what the channel is about, but do play the games sometime. There's so much fan content that I feel the games themselves don't get as much attention as they deserve.

Touhou has been around for so long with do many great songs that you probably could ask a hundred different fans for one song and get a hundred different recommendations. Maybe not that many. Some have lyrics and some don't but pretty much everything is good.
Touhou is like the biggest secret of the internet. It’s easy to know nothing about it. But once you finally do learn what it is, you realize it’s been everywhere the entire time and you just didn’t know.
The Touhou franchise is a really old one that stretches for more than a decade. The first time I knew about it was roughly around my secondary school days I think. It's rather tough explaining the phenomena out it all via a comment, so I'd suggest looking up some Touhou explained/introduction vids on TH-cam. Another alternative would be dedicating a live stream for Touhou so those amongst the audience in the know can recommend the best vids to help expand your knowledge of the franchise.

I don't know a ton about Touhou, but I'll say what I do know. Touhou started off as a series of Jp only indie games, mostly consisting of bullet hells. Some of the more recent Touhou games have been localized outside of Jp now.
All I really know about the plot is that it follows the shrine maiden Reimu (the first and last girl seen in this MV) as she deals with spiritual and supernatual people usually causing trouble.

@@velocityofclan interesting thing to point out is that although the story is revolving around reimu, we rarely or never get the story from her perspective hence reimu seems to change personality every story because peoples perpective on her changes depending on who they are.

As far as I'm aware, the reason why it looks the way it does is that it was originally done with cardboard cut-outs. After that, it blew up and was all over the news so more and more people began working on how it looked, basically editing bits and pieces till you get what you have now.
EDIT: Just FYI, I remember seeing all this on the news when it happened. It's essentially one of the first 3-5 internet memes that gained global attention. Even before Hamster Dance.

You should check out the Bad Apple Animation that was done on r/place this year. The Touhou fandom is a bunch of fucking mad lads to be able to manage that.
For starters, Touhou is a series of Bullet Hells made by one guy. It started in 1996 on a Japanese Computer called the PC98 and was developed for that computer for the first 5 installments. The series was just something small made by the creator and sold at a Doujin event called Comiket. Basically where a bunch of indie creators sell their stuff. It wasn't until 2002 when the 6th game in the series (developed for Windows) did the series take off, in large part due to the music. UN Owen was Her? is pretty much THE song that skyrocketed Touhou's popularity in the early and mid 2000's. It's not the only thing that spring boarded it's popularity, the creator's lax licensing requirements also played a huge part. He's very open to keeping the 'Doujin spirit' of the franchise intact which allows creators to almost effectively use the IP for free so long as they follow his guidelines. This leads to the songs from games being remixed on a near constant basis. in 2015, there was a repository of a vast amount of Fanmade Touhou songs that totaled about 1.35 Terabytes in compressed formats. Since the release of the 6th entry, Touhou's popularity exploded in JP and has even had a noticeable impact in the west. Just as an example, Touhou is a massive influence for Toby Fox and Undertale has quite a few nods to the series.
Now, The Bad Apple animation has quite an impressive history all to itself, especially because it's pretty much a perfect representation of what Touhou is about as a Doujin Series. The original Song, Bad Apple, is from the 4th entry in the series, Lotus Land Story in 1998. The song in the animation PV you watched was released in 2007. Following that a user on niconico (basically japanese TH-cam) uploaded a story board for what would eventually become the Bad Apple PV you just watched. He requested somebody to animate it to that version of the song. The niconico community took to the challenge and various iterations based on the story board were uploaded. Then, in 2009, this animation was finally uploaded and became an instant hit. You'd think that's where the story ends, but it's not. True to Touhou's roots, the Bad Apple animation has become a monolith of Touhou's doujin spirit. Bad Apple has been reimagined with 3D models, AI generation, through stop motion and the list goes on. But not only that, it has also become iconic in porting to various other pieces of technology from Gameboy, NES, Calculators, oscilloscopes and, as I mentioned above, r/place. Basically, if there's a screen, then it can play Bad Apple.
While it's not really touched upon much, but I feel this PV is also an incredible example on why great character design matters. Even though you only see their silhouettes, you can clearly tell the difference between them and snippets of their personalities.
Touhou is a veritable treasure trove of amazing music. You won't be disappointed with more reactions to the music as they are damn good. Some of my personal favorites are UN Owen was Her?, Kobito of the Shining Needle and Candid Friend.

the music video is made with MMD (Miku Miku Dance), a free 3d animation software usually used for making vocaloid dance music videos. at the time this came out, MMD had an unfortunate reputation of looking cheap (though that has certainly changed since). the black and white silhouette style of the video made MMD look elegant and professional like people hadnt seen before, and inspired people to get more creative with things like colour and lighting effects

There's also plenty of high quality fangames as well, like Luna Nights or Scarlet Curiosity, which are separate genres entirely. In terms of videos, I *highly* recommend minusT's channel. His 3D works encapsulate the spirit of Touhou series the most and videos are well worth reacting to. Fandom creations are heart and soul of the series, just like Bad Apple (which is a remix of the Touhou 4 stage 4 theme, btw). ^ ^

The important thing to know is that there's a lot of fan music remixing music from the games (Bad Apple itself is the stage 3 music from the 4th game, which hails all the way back in the PC98 era. The silhouettes shown in this MV are from characters who are mostly from the Windows era up until the most recent one back when this song was made (so... game 6 to game 10, including the fighting game spinoffs), so yeah, you're really not gonna recognize anyone here unless you're deep enough into the rabbit hole.
Toby Fox snuck in a few Touhou references into Undertale as well, so you might even recognize something by osmosis.
My favorite Touhou reference by Toby Fox is "[Heaven], are you WATCHING?", even if it somehow was not intended to be one.

Touhou Project is a very long running series of bullet hell games (almost) all made by a single person who goes by "ZUN". It takes place in Gensokyo (meaning Land of Fantasy), a mystical realm in Japan that was cut away from our modern world. All the fantastical beings we no longer believe in live there which mostly consist of Japanese youkai but also includes western fairies and vampires as well. Bad Apple is a sort of celebration of Touhou up till the point it came out. It features characters from Touhou 6 (which is when the modern canon started) to Touhou 10. For a point of comparison, we're up to Touhou 19 now.
Touhou is famous for its unique soundtracks the likes of which you'll never hear. Bad Apple itself is based on a stage theme from Touhou 4 though it's not all that similar besides the start. If you'd ask me what the appeal of the series was I'd have a few answers. The setting itself is very carefree and mystical, the characters are often clever reimaginings of creatures of myth and well... just listen to some of the soundtrack.
