- 2008 Jeep Wrangler JKU Stock fender flare flat mod/ cut in an hour and $0 (unless you buy the trim)
After installing my 35” tires, I only have a 2” lift and they looked a little tight to the fender flares, so I looked up online how much they would cost to get a set of flat fender.. WOW, they are $400 and up for a decent set, so I said NOPE and started looking online if there was a way to shave the stock fenders, sure enough there was and there are many ways to do them, some take them totally off, cut them and reinstall which takes a whole afternoon! I decided to cut them on the Jeep since it held them pretty secure for the cuts and the only thing I ended up having to take out was the inner wells to shave them down.
I love the look and the price. Gives the tires another 2” clearance for articulation. So in about an hour you can do this job with just a minimal set of tools. Jig saw, 10 TPI blades, saws-all, screwdriver and some sandpaper. 20' of trim molding I added later to give it a more finished look.

They look great. I also have the painted fenders and have been looking to see if anyone has cut them - like they do the stock black fenders. I also like that you left the curved lip on the stock fenders. I guess that it is time to break out the jigsaw for myself.

Most folks woulda put tape on the fender to protect it. MotoCheez cut that sh** like a boss. Sharpie line freestyle. Nice work brother.
Ward Atwell you're right, but I always tape the bottom plate on my jig saw, the paint didn't splinter or chip. I trimmed it too .. TY!

did you have to worry about side markers for inspection if so how did you work around that issue? thanks for the video its exactly what I was looking for. Have a 12 Altitude wrangler with painted fenders and wanted to see how it would look versus the matt black everyone else has. I love keeping the roll too.
Brian Mazor I didn't replace the markers, but was going to use a small amber LED under the fender. yes, I kept the roll for strength and so mud don't fling... thanks!

Also, would be cool if someone came up with a paper template for this mod. Could just lay the template over the fenders, trace it out, cut out the lines.
Would save many from making errors on measuring / marking lines. And the template could be sold for like $20. Now not a "free" mod, but wayyyyyyyyy less than the $400+ for aftermarket fenders! lol

I'm thinking about getting the rugged ridge hurricane fender flares for my TJ and they are $350, not sure how much for the JK but I know they make them.
Now that I've seen the difference in how trimming them makes the jeep look taller I think I need them more now.
AceInvader they're a few hundred more for the JK. With the lift I have I like the look. Best part is if I didn't like it I'd just but the aftermarket.
MotoCheez Thats the same mentality I have, I'm thinking about spraying mine with rustoleum bedliner. Its not too rough but it might match my bumper better. And it helps justifying buying more stuff if it doesn't work lol.

Looks ok, but it was still a very hard video to watch. I cringe at the very thought of taking saw to my jku.
Sani Bravo it took a little courage, but I saw it gets do it before. plus I off-road a lot, not afraid if scratches etc. which the flares were already beat up a little.

SB \-_-/ so key is on, kill switch is on, you crank the motor over with plug out and grounded to the motor and there is no spark from plug?

Buys 20K plus dollar wrangler. Buys nice set of brand new 35" tires. Cheaps out on fender flares and performs an absolute hack job on the stockers. I just don't get the mindset.
transamman305 because I don't want a bigger lift, offset rims or spacers, and every aftermarket fender flair set I like are too wide or too narrow and not worth $600 plus. I love the way it looks, I've brushed up against trees with them, they flex. I'd do it again, stock set of flair are cheap if I wanted to go back.
All said and done it looks ok. I just figure with all the aftermarket options there's got to be something out there that looks nice and fits with the tire size. I own a TJ and they make every size flare in existence. Stockers are 3.75", rubi flares are 4.75", theres 6" and even 7" options. I would have kept the stock painted flares in nice shape and just got a set of take off non painted flares to modify. Either way, your jeep and your choice. Whatever works for ya!
transamman305 I know what you're saying. I guess I should have pointed out the extensions were pretty stuffed up to start with. the jeep was abused before I bought it. I did look or something aftermarket but didn't see anything I liked, then saw other people are doing this so said, what the he'll! lol

Imanueali Nassem matter of opinion I guess, a lot of people do it for articulation clearance. buy or make them after installing big tires. I think it looks badass.

I think it looks alright unless you have black fenders and a white or bright body color below/behind it. Then it looks pretty stupid. This doesn't look bad at all. Worst case, you butcher it and buy some replacements. I'm sure there are lots of stock ones out there to practice on that people have removed and replaced.
Rob Estees that's how I feel, I would have ripped the stock ones off a dozen times already. These hanging on good still.
