  • Short video under the 87 chevy s10. Please excuse shaky cam. I did get the bolts that I was missing.
    I might try and re do this video since it really does suck. But I wanted to get something out there.
    Very happy my truck has a 5 speed manual now. Been wanting it since I was a freshman in HS. So that is about.... well a long time. 15 years at least.

    Nice. I have an 87 reg cab 2.5 L S10 that I’m slamming and also looking at replacing the 4 speed with a 5 speed. Wanting close ratio gearing and found a shop on eBay that will list the gear ratios they install.
    Did 1st gear still feel as long after the swap?

      @barrysauce  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes as I remember everything is pretty much exactly the same. You just have a 5th gear. Pretty much an overdrive. I'm at 65mph on the freeway and I'm not at like over 3000rpm. its at 2500 or so. One of the main reasons why I wanted the 5 speed.

    Hey man, what transmission did you use? I have an 87 myself and want to convert it.

      I believe it was out of an 89,90, or 91 s10. Same 1st gen body style. Might be cheaper to find one refurbished from autozone or something like that though.

    1987 as well,4 speed manual.. I'm having problems with it sometimes it won't go in the first gear or second sometimes when ,bump into neutral first grabs.. 3rd 4th and reverse work all day long it's kind of mind screwing me right now

      Sounds like taking the s10 to a transmission shop is the best bet to diag the issues.

      Can also search for a refurbished 1982 to 1995 T5 transmission. I know at one point after I spent almost 4k on buying used trans from the pull it yard and pay much more to rebuild I found AutoZone had the same thing but a refurbished for around 1K. but I can't find the link anymore. That was years ago. Nevermind found it. Midwest Manual Transmission MTGM018

    Saw your thread at the S10 forum concerning this swap. I did some quick calculations and noticed that the 5 speed will drop engine rpm by about 500 rpm, which I think you eventually discovered. Also, if you can hold the throttle in about the same spot as you did with the 4 speed (don't be afraid to downshift on hills. I found it actually increases fuel mileage, even though the engine turns faster, because you use less throttle) you should realize about 3.5 mpg improvement. Increase in mileage will give you about 34 extra miles range @ 3/4 tank (about 9.4 gallons with the standard bed option). Over 200 miles the increase in fuel mileage should save you about $3.38 in fuel cost.

      Thanks for the post and view. Oh yeah I noticed right away the truck ran smoother and I can go 65mph on the freeway without the motor going to 3600rpm or around that. Now it is about 3100 rpm at 65mph. Not too many posts or information on doing the swap. But I knew that the same 2.5 motor from the same body style in an 88 or 89 s10 would swap. And it has the mechanical speedo. At autozone I noticed too late you can buy a brand new refurbished tranny with tail shaft for 1k. I spent an ungodly amount of money on the swap but I have a real good running motor since it was also rebuilt. Working on getting the carpet redone now. I should do a new video and post up pics and videos on the forums. Thanks again for the info. Nice of ya.

      You're welcome. Sounds like you're on your way to having a really nice little truck and I have a lot of respect for anyone willing to put in the time to create and/or maintain a nice little runner. Keep her forever.

      Yep. Did you ever replace the carpet in one? That is my next step. Thinking of buying the carpet kit and the sound dampening material at lmc truck. Can't find a video of the s10 anywhere getting done. I should do it and put it up. I tore out the stock rubber thing. Was rotted bad. I want it to be quite. It is loud and hot as hell in there during the summer.

      Just do the opposite of what you did to take it out. You'll have to remove the seats and probably the shifter. There should be instructions with the kit, but basically, you're going to apply some kind of glue and lay the insulation down first, then the carpet. Just make sure you have everything straight and start at one side and work slowly towards the other side, slowly rolling the carpet down onto the floor. Its ok if you have to stop several times and check to make sure you're still straight. Remember, "slow and steady wins the race". If you have to make corrections, its easier to do it as you're laying it out, rather than laying it out, then trying to make corrections because the glue will likely have set up by then (or at least started to). If you can find a kit with a MOLDED CARPET, I've been told those are the easiest to install, because they are not only cut to size, its also "bent" around all the undulations inside the cab (like the tranny and driveshaft tunnels), all you're doing is just basically laying the carpet down on the floor. Granted, I've never installed a carpet in an S10, but I used to be a rigger and thus, have installed them in boats before. I was also a mechanic at one time and have some experience in many aspects of vehicle repair and maintenance. My late father had an '87 long bed that had a 4.3 in it and I changed it over from bench seat to buckets, because the buckets were more comfy for my father who was well into the cancer that finally killed him. If you make that change, be aware that you'll have to drill holes for the inside feet, as they won't be present. In that case, I just sized a drill bit to the hole in the leg for the seat and drilled through everything. I did have to get a couple of bolts, nuts and washers, but I have a vast supply of that stuff, so it was no biggee. You could skip that step, but the seat could tip towards the door as you get in and out, because its only bolted down on that side and that might fatigue the sheet metal to the point to where there could be structural problems....but I have seen people do that before.

      Thanks for such a big reply. I almost bought the carpet kit and the sound material. I'm gonna have to wait but since I drove it more often I will get it done sooner. When I do I will try and get pictures and video while I am doing it. The next step is to take the dash off to fix the door vent issues and move stuff for bigger speakers.

      Im very curious as well , let me know if you find out !!! I have an 83 s10 with the 2.8 and 4 speed, I was looking to put a 3.4 5 speed from a 94 camro in the truck. I know that the 3.4 will work with the intake, carb oil pan so long as I had the electric fuel pump but Im really curious about the transmission

    • @barrysauce

      There are 2 different brands and each should work from what I know. Best is to go to the pull it yard and find one out of the same body style and get the mounts and swap it out. Make sure it works and the gears aren't bad at a machine shop.

    So what year 5 speed is that? I'm trying to keep thr cable set up like you did but can't find a 5 speed with that set up how did you manage that?

    • @barrysauce
      @barrysauce  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked at the same body style and found an 88,89,90 or 91. I would look at the tail shaft to make sure it has the mechanical speedo. Those all are the same body style and wouldn't require any crazy modification.

      @barrysauce  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Elongo82 if you wanted the mechanical speedo would have to get another transmission with one in it. Or call a transmission shop and see if it can be swapped. I had a few and I spent an ass load of money. You should look on AutoZone site and see if they sell a refurbished t5 on the site. I found that afterwards and could have bought it and saved a few thousand dollars

      Not sure if that will work. I did this 6 years ago now so stuff might not be available anymore on any websites but you can search and check junk yards out. Look at those years I told you. 90 or 91 would be the best as far as I can remember. Pull it off and make sure it gets checked out by a shop first before putting it in. I wanted a real good reliable transmission so I put more money others might not want to put into it. Good Luck

    So will my 87 driveshaft and everything going to a 5 speed. I have the 2.8 4speed

    • @barrysauce
      @barrysauce  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and No. The drive shaft from a 4 cylinder 2.5 and v6 2.8 are the same from what I can remember. There are 2 different 5 speeds that came with the s10. A t5 borg and warner is one of them and the one I usually end up finding at the pull it yard. The drive shaft is the same length on the 4 cylinder or the 2.8 v6. The mounting brackets from the 4 speed to the 5 speed are different so you need to make sure you get those. If you have a pull it yard in your area the smart thing to do is find s10's that are the 1st generation from 88 to 92 and check them out for the 5 speed. If it is the same boxy body style then pretty much the tranny will swap. That is what I discovered in my 4 speed to 5 speed swap. I had no idea you can get a 2.8 v6 with a 4 speed. That is nuts. On mine everything works and it has been about 4 years I think already. The truck has sat alot for work on the dash board that you saw on here. I think the syncro's are messed up so I'm taking it in on Tuesday to get it look at. The same shop that did the rebuild will look at it and hopefully fix the grinding and odd shifting issues. Other than that no service lights or issues. I did do the EGR delete cuz it is a useless piece of shit. Good luck. I suggest a floor tranny jack.
