I was experimenting with different cutrer grips and found when you hold the ball like a regular fastball but tuck your index finger in the ball will cut only a couple of feet after leaving the hand and then just keep going straight like a fastball. It's a very interesting pitch
If it cuts a couple of feet (24 inches), you should be playing in the MLB

I'm confused; I thought those pitches had opposite spin directions along the horizontal axis, with the slider spinning top forward like a curve and the cutter spinning top down like a fastball.
If I understand what he's saying here, he releases the ball over his hand to give it forward spin like a curve, which would make this a slider rather than a cutter.
I've never been able to get the ball to break glove side consistently so if you know the trick I'm all ears. My curve didn't come naturally so maybe getting comfortable with the ball coming out over my hand is part of it.
Just getting the ball to break glove side consistently would be a big asset regardless of how it moves vertically.
@@Mikejones011990Only thing different about the slider is the grip is a 2 seam instead of this 4 seam grip. It spins the ball differently.

Which finger is the last one touching the ball at release, your index or middle?
Is that the difference in your cutter and slider? (I mean do you release under your middle finger to give backspin for your cutter, and over your index to give forward spin to make the slider drop?)

Always looks more like a slutter to me, I get it’s 85mph and that’s cutter speed from like the early 2000s but for Trev especially the way he throws it I’d call it more a slutter than a cutter, you don’t really throw them like a football that takes too much velo off, if he had a true cutter it’d sit like 89ish and would probably have half as much break if that
Edit: still a sick pitch btw I’m not taking anything away from that it’s just too slow and breaks too much in comparison to his fastball to be a true cutter, and again the way he holds it very much so contributes to that, he’s not very behind the ball

Sorry, that’s not a cutter. Mariano Rivera’s cutter did not have gyro spin, it had backspin with a spin axis offset. That’s a power slider.
