  • I went to a fancy house in England. Today our Caribbean Princess cruise stopped in Falmouth in the UK and my friend Don (‪@Donsfamilyvacations‬ ) and I took a cruise ship excursion in to Cornwall to tour the old house Lanhydrock. We also visited the seaside town of Fowey. Pasties and cream tea was samples. Enjoy this look at the UK's luxurious and Royal country.

    I grew up in Grass Valley CA - a small gold mining town in northern California. It has a history of miners from Cornwall England - they brought the Cornish pasties with them - a wonderful food from my childhood.

      That’s so cool! I live in Western PA and we have the Czech version of pasties in our bakeries. Many people from Eastern Europe came to this area to work in the steel mills and mines. I never thought about European immigrants going as far west to California for that industry but it certainly makes sense. We all have to follow the jobs…

    In the 1800's Cornish minors were brought Michigan's Upper Peninsula. They not only brought their mining expertise but also the pasty . The copper mines played out but the pasty is sill made in Michigan especially the UP. They are hand food. Eaten from one end to the other so the juices don't run out. Made usually with onions/potatoes . It was portable and heated up with their mining lamps . Probably can order them online now. ⛏😝

      Do you mean Cornish *miners*?

    • @Krypto64
      @Krypto64 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sometimes the pasties had meat in one end, jam in the other - lunch and dessert in one! I don’t fancy that…

    • @pureholy
      @pureholy หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cornish miners also settled in Pennsylvania, pasties are still made there.

      Living in Michigan, I grew up on pasties. They are always served with gravy no matter where I've bought them. Love those things.

      The side crimp on the OG Cornish pasty was a safety design. Tin mining involved a lot of arsenic so the large crimp was a handle to safely eat the pasty without the miner poisoning themselves from the arsenic on their hands, they ate the rest then discarded the crimp which would then serve a secondary function of poisoning any rats in the mine that ate them off the floor. Nowadays we be greedy beggars so we eat the crimp too. Butte Montana is probably about as Cornish as anywhere I've ever seen on TV, the locals there literally look identical to stereotypical indigenous Cornish yokels, they still proudly make pasties there too, I believe they consider it their main local cuisine.

    I would throughly enjoy seeing all the restoration work. It makes you appreciate the amount of work it takes to keep an estate from that era looking pristine and available for us to enjoy. And to think it was done with no power tools and mass production and Home Depot for all the materials. The people of Fowey must have huge calves, thighs, and lungs.

    I've been to London a few times, and now that my son lives there, I was thinking of touring again and seeing Paris, and maybe some other European places; however, after seeing this, I may convince him and his family to take us OUT of London and go visit other areas. It's so beautiful!

      Lived my whole life in UK, visited many places and still so much I haven’t seen, honestly there is so much to see. This is a National Trust property, you may want to look into their properties, membership and visitors pass (has to be brought outside UK) to see if it is more economical. My American friends found that it paid for it’s self, as there were many NT properties near where we were staying.

    I really enjoyed that tour, you’re top company and I’m glad you had a good time.
    There’s rarely a need to worry about cashpoints, I can’t imagine any shops in a tourist village not taking plastic or phone payments. And we never did adopt the euro, Brits simply refused to give up Sterling… I’m surprised we gave up the groat.
    Have you been to Edinburgh? I ask because you mentioned the steep streets in Cornwall, and yes, these looked a pain… but Edinburgh is worse!
    Now, tell me if this is annoying, but ‘pasty’ rhymes with ‘nasty’ rather than ‘hasty’. And we pronounce ‘buoy’ as ‘boy’, but the US ‘boo-ey’ is so cute, and not wrong, just different.
    Hope you’re having a lovely day!

    the Spar is equal to the American 7-11 store. As an expat (Englan to Canada) I like seeing the old Motherland. There was mass immigration to the Americas. Cornish miners as well as North Eastern (My home area) coal miners to West VIrginia and other Rust belt locations for economic wealth and the start of a new life. You can travel around parts of America and hear the British influence in stories, ryhmes and songs. We share a common historical bond past down from generations.

    Love these videos of you taking us on your journey - even better with Don (I cant believe your trip to Japan was 2019!!! Time flies). The scenery around Fowey is breathtaking and the castle (home) gorgeous! Lil bit of trivia, I live in the town where Hitchcock's The Birds was filmed! Thx for that bit of history!

    This kind of content is tremendous. Rick Steve needs to watch his back! I really hope you do more of this, because it is good or better than any travelogue I have ever seen. You are a natural in your element doing this.

    As a Brit (well English!) I enjoyed seeing this episode. It’s cool to see how you saw the quaint places you visited, and makes me glad to live here. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    When I lived in the UK I worked for a Company that installed and maintained fire alarms in this type of property. It was awesome to explore these buildings' getting to see everything that the public was not allowed to see. The oldest building I installed a system in was a 1300th century castle in Yorkshire called Ripley Castle.

    You are so lucky with the weather. Hi from Australia. My sister lives in Cornwall and yesterday she said at last summer is here and it's nearly August. It is a beautiful county and they speak Gaelic. My nephew speaks Cornish. As for driving in Cornwall, Don is right it is mad. In Australia and America we are used to big roads, Cornish roads are so narrow. The Cornish pasty..pronounced paasty not what you said..that is something very different..if you know what I mean😉 Cornish clotted cream is the best. Also bit of history here. The Cornish pasty was made for the Cornish tin miners to eat in the mine, hence the ends. One end was filled with veggies and meat, while other end was apple. Then they threw away the pastry ends, so they did not contaminate their food with the poison arsenic from tin mining.
    Clever.

    My Dad moved and lived down near Lanhydrock when he retired 25 years ago. He passed away in 2022, but the last week I spent with him we walked his dogs in the grounds of Lanhydrock (a favourite place to take them), and one day we visited Fowey and sat down by the river at the pub (which you showed) enjoying a drink. Good to see it bathed in sunshine, as I remember it 😊

    Lovely weather for it Tony 🌞
    I see you'll be in Isafjordur on Saturday.
    We visited there last month.
    It's a very small place, but we found a great micro brewery very near where the ship berths.
    It's called Dokkan Brugghús.
    They do some tasty snacks as well 😋
