    Number one on my list of old school game soundtracks needing a full power metal cover/remix.

    I have no idea why I played this game so much as a kid. I think I sympathized very much with the protagonist (despite being half his age at the time), so it felt more personal to me. The soundtrack is pretty unforgettable (specifically Stage 1 and the crazy "bass" of the boss theme), and some of the animations were pretty hilarious (that rock boss has the oddest walking animation), so I really have no explanation outside of that. Ah well... it kept me entertained far longer than it had any right to, so I can't complain.
    Thanks for the review!

      I've have a tendency to want to give games higher scores if they hold some nostalgia factor for me and that can be pretty hard to shake sometimes. I did not grow up with Astyanax but I bet if I had I'd be more forgiving of some of the games flaws which exposes some of my own subjectivity I suppose but I guess that's just how it goes!

      Nah, the rating was deserved. I still have the rose-tinted glasses, but objectively I see the gameplay and can remember all the flaws of the game. I'll be honest: I only ever beat the game without the invincibility code one time, and that happened in my teen years, when I decided I needed to make sure I beat games legitimately before I cheat in them. lol

    • @quwebs
      @quwebs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LordSephleon no shame in using cheat codes - I think folks should enjoy games how they want to. Not everyone has all day to sit around and practice a game until their thumbs go numb and if someone wants to give themselves an advantage to further their enjoyment of a game I say do it!

    I mean, you can't just live in modern day and name your kid Astyanax and *not* expect them to get pulled into some wild adventure, right?
    I know it isn't, but this really feels like it would be a okay-ish tie-in game to a really wild 80s manga that got like, one OVA release on VHS in 1994 and only seven English speakers know about

    • @quwebs
      @quwebs  ปีที่แล้ว

      What's interesting about this game is that the arcade version looks so different from the Famicom version. And the Famicom box art looks like what most English covers get changed into. Where we get changed box art to _kinda_ look like what's in the game.

    Glad I'm not the only one; people are obsessed with this game, but I never thought it was all that great. The Arcade original isn't bad, but also not something I'd go out of my way to play.

    • @quwebs
      @quwebs  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t played the arcade version yet. I think the arcade game is called “The Astyanax” which is kinda odd

    Great review. I am always gobsmacked by the tendency towards large sprites in some of these actions games. All of the games fondly remembered from this era have a better balance between character sprites and the play area.

    Whenever I see one of your videos I always get a big smile on my face. I never played Astyanax and looking at this I feel like I'm not missing much. I'm genuinely curious, how long did it take you to beat that game for this review? It looks very difficult with such a massive hitbox. Thanks for giving us an amusing outro, since you didn't have any bloopers this time.

    • @quwebs
      @quwebs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Believe it or not I managed to beat this one in a single sitting during a Twitch stream. I think it took about three hours!
      I somehow didn't make many mistakes while recording the voice-over. I thought that meant I was getting better until I began working on the next video... there will be quite a few for that one 😅

    Excellent review! In comparison to Ninja Gaiden, the cut scenes in Astyanax seem like they don't mesh as well with the main game - or like they were some kind of manga/anime that wasn't localized

    Yeah, Pinball quest would always beat this game out, wanted to like this one, and I’m not here to give an angry game review about a game that I didn’t like as much as I felt I should have, but even if this video is not an actual review I think you nailed why I liked pinball quest better.
    I liked the art style at first, but when I kept being shot into bottomless pits, I missed the erratic movement of Medusa heads and clock towers… Because that somehow seemed more fair.
    For real though, was this any better than Eight eyes, or Holy diver? No, I don’t believe so.
    Lipstick on a well perfumed pig, with inviting chunky sprites.
    I was really young when I first played this game, and I really did want to like it. I know too that you’re a 16 year old boy who transforms into ultra Chad, and goes on a magical massacre through fairyland, which should have been cool as hell! It wasn’t cool at all.
    The one thing that almost saved this game though, was that the fairy was wearing leg warmers, because the early 90s was just like the late 80s.
    This game was a cash grab, and I don’t care that I didn’t like it…
    Thanks for covering this, not bad enough to have that kind of fame, or playable enough to have strange fans to remember it.
    Great video!

    I love when my number value in my mind matches yours at the end of the video. I've yet to play Astyanax for myself, but I might shuffle it a little further down the list now. It's always seemed a bit clunky to play and watching you enjoy it during the streams was good enough for me!
    This one really reminded me a lot of another game called Kenseiden on the Master System. Not for its features, but mainly for the character movement/hit boxes and knockback issues. If there's ever a Master System Abridged series, I'd love to hear your take on that one.

    I loved the arcade game (specially the music) so when I rented this game I got very disappointed. The character sprite was even bigger than the arcade counterpart, and all the points you mentioned are totally valid: everything hits you!, sluggish platforming, and those annoying floating enemies lol.
    If I remember correctly I only finished the game thanks to a secreto code that gave you don’t remember if it was invincibility or infinite lives or continues.
    I think I apreciarte the game much more now than when I was a teenager.

    Two words on the cutscenes:text speed. Slower then Ninja Gaiden's cutscenes and no dummy the power meter is taken from The Legendary Axe on the PC Engine a far better game made by the same guy who worked on this game too. Why they didn't just port the arcade game of Astynax is beyond me.
