Fresh Quwebs in my subscription box is one of my favourite things about Saturdays. I love learning about new games from your series! This one looks like it has a lot of variety, and I'm also looking forward to watching your High Score video too!

I would have never found Quwebs if you didn’t say anything about him on your channel, years ago.
TH-cam is weird, I don’t think I would have gotten any of this in my recommendations.
If you’re reading this, Hi Quwebs, I didn’t realize you came on, on Saturdays, but you do, and that’s cool.
If you’re reading this, great video, dude!

Despite having never seen or heard this game until watching TH-cam as an adult, I swear I have memories of hearing that music as a very young child. It's just like one of those songs that plays in your head every once in a while and you don't know where it's from.
Also, fun fact, this is actually a sprite swap of a licensed game for the manga GeGeGe no Kitaro!

Excellent review! Back in the day, I rented this game with some friends and we didn't have a manual to refer to, so it was mystifying trying to figure out what to do, what was even a power up, and what was an enemy :D

I have a soft spot for NInja Kid. It's repetitive, but there's a lot of creativity with the monster designs and the esoteric design (ex. what does this falling icon do) made for some fun attempts at riddling the fairly random gameplay elements out. I wish they made more of this one, actually. It's old school, but it had potential between the distinctive aesthetics and action. (and yes, I know it's a slightly redesigned game based on a manga due to licensing issues, kind of like Dragon Power)

That pegasus looks very kitsune-like. Wonder if there were some changes between JP and Western releases?

'Tweef', huh? I thought this was an all ages channel 🤪
Ninja Kid is an interesting one, not just because of where it released in the NES lineup, but also because it's a reskin of a licensed game based on a yokai anime. It's still better than the other Bandai NES game released at around this time - Chubby Cherub

The idea that a game was played "to the end" wasn't well established in 1986 when this was first published. You have many home games which don't lead to a conclusion even though aren't based on an arcade game. This would fly during the Atari generation, but with more complex games where the focus isn't on score, the experience is confusing.

"You have to run to the left corner of the screen and squat which is your friends cue to join the battle." In North America we go to the right and squat to signal to our friends it's time to fight. I guess they didn't localize that part.
    The video looks amazing!

Tose was an interesting developer, because they often functioned as kind of a ghostwriter for other companies. We know some of the games they developed, but there are a lot for which they aren't credited; to this point, when I was writing top 10 lists for GameFAQs years ago, another writer made a top 10 list of games SUSPECTED to have been developed by them. It's an interesting rabbit hole to descend.

    • @quwebs

Chibi Legend of Kage, but with more clouds and less climbing very tall trees.
To the point, and very fluid script, five minutes was gone, and I felt like I learned a little about an obscure, at least in the last couple of decades, but you made the game look like fun.
This is one of the NES games I’ve never played, even in the late 90s when I swore to play every NES rom… But I never did, and this is one of the few I’ve never even loaded.
I may have to try it just to see, but I did find The Legend of Kage too repetitive, yet still, this game seems to have more going for it.

I was confused at first, because the game ninja-kun is often translated as ninja-kid so I thought you were gonna review that game.
Then watching the first minutes of the game footage I realized this is the western localization of gegege no kitaro, which deal with yokai (ghosts and monster of Japanese folklore) and have zero relationship with ninjas. Not strange because most anime/manga based games got bastardly westernized, for example obake no Q taro which got to the US as chubby cheerub or something like that.

Great review! I used to play this game all the time when I rented it at the local shop. There's a series of mini games in the title Retro Game Challenge (Also known as GameCenterCX Arino's Challenge, and based on an excellent Japanese show) that are a direct homage to this game. I really enjoyed it myself as a kid way back in the day, even if it was repetitive. Something about that loop. LOL at the Ninten"dork" sticker on your console! Gotta clap my hands on your description of how to beat stages, that was QUITE the mouthful. Thanks for making such awesome content! Have you ever played Kid Niki? It's also a kind of "Ninja" game with some interesting choices.
