Research Submarine "Euronaut" - Denmark Expedition june 2019

- The longest expedition of the submarine "Euronaut" so far took place in June 2019 off coast of the Danish island Møn. The crew trained the shallow water manoeuvrability and bottoming of the vehicle including diver lock-in/lock-out procedures.
"Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine. It has been designed by the German naval architect Carsten Standfuss between 1988 and 2000. Then it took his team of enthusiasts another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt and the project is completely self-funded.
The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

Man, I would love to see a technical overview of how you guys plan and execute your diving expeditions. It must be quite something to prepare the submarine and all that diving gear.

Carsten Standfuß (the owner) said in an Interview in a german tv show called galileo that he does not want to build another sub.

So I have a question about the sonar. How do you get such a clear visual reading of the bottom in real time without using active sonar that will mess with the wildlife? Short range UHF?

Hallo, Carsten Standfuß. Mich würde gerne interessieren, wie du eigentlich bei der Planung vorgegangen bist. Und auch welche Bücher du gelesen hast. Ich würde auch gerne mal ein Uboot bauen, aber ich weiß einfach nicht welches Material man braucht, um zu lernen, das alles zu berechnen und so weiter. Mich würde auch interessieren, ob und falls ja, welche Software du für die Entwicklung du verwendet hast. Möglicherweise Catia V5 für CAD und ANSYS für Simulationen?

Ich kann zunächst erzählen welche Bücher mir beim Verstehen der Uboottechnik geholfen haben. Carsten hat die alle auch. Ulrich Gabler - Unterseebootbau ist soe twas wie die Bibel des Ubootbauers, wenn es um einen Lockeren einstieg in die militärische Technik geht. Wenn es um die zivile Tauchboote geht, gibt es m.E. nichts besseres auf dem Markt als Farnk Busby - Manned Submersibles. Klar ist es in die Jahre gekommen, aber die Grundlagen sind noch immer dieselben und außerdem findet man das Buch auch kostenlos zum Herunterladen. Bei den Berechnungen sind die Kostenlosen Klassebauvorschriften des DNV-GL extrem hilfreich. Die haben einen kompletten Satz an Auslegungsverfahren und Formel für zivile Unterwasserfahrzeuge für jeden Geschmack. Beim Vorgehen würde ich lange bevor ich den ersten Strich setze gut überlegen wie der Nutzungskonzept des Fahrzeugs aussehen soll. Wer und wie soll es bedienen, wie wird es gewartet, wo wird es gelagert, wie viel soll es in der Beschaffung und Unterhaltung kosten. Ohne das ist das technische Teil zum Scheitern verurteilt. Was die Software angeht, Carsten arbeitet bis heute mit 2D CAD.

How did you waterproof the drive shaft/propeller?
There is a ceramic sealing with the intgrated thrust bearing. All inside the stern tube filled with silicone oil.
