It`s good to see you taking such good care of the local wildlife ,what with the bird spa /pond and now your providing housing for them .Your a star .Thanks for caring . ATB
What a cute little bird house! You’ll have to keep us posted on whether or not Lucy uses it. I hope the wind doesn’t knock it out of the tree. Did you notice in the footage, when you’re using the circular saw, every time you turn it off, I can faintly hear the sound of church bells 🔔. 😃 Happy Easter, Don! Our Risen Lord is EVERYTHING and without Him we have NOTHING. 💜
Thanks Helene! The boxes are jammed into the mesquite thorn crotches of the trees and so far even with some crazy winds they are fine. I will wire them in shortly though. I was so busy sawing I didnt hear the church bells. Hope you Easter was a blessed one!
When nailing close to the ends of wood, the nail tends to split the wood, so it's a good idea to predrill the holes on the wood. Plus it just makes it easy to drive nail.
also, a carpenter showed me another trick to accomplish the same thing: tap the sharp end of the nail with your hammer once or twice to flatten it, then it won't split the wood. No drilling needed. It actually works!
Oh I hope the birdies move into the houses 👍 if you have any luck I would love to see the new birdie residence in action 😁 so nice to see my other favorite TH-camrs on your channel 😉
Always nice to see a new video Don. I've been following you for about a year now and what an inspiration you are to me and so many people. Welcome to our neck of the woods. It's always nice to have visitors from the surrounding area, and Jim and Jessica can bring a smile to anyone's day. As a senior myself it's so important to keep ourselves busy. My latest project is a waterfall with a spring, it might take me a while to finish it, I just don't move as fast as I used to. Happy building with all your projects, stay healthy and safe.
I too have predrilled the nail holes a few years ago for old short blocks. I’ve never had a problem with them as long as they are not drilled to large. From things you’ve said in earlier videos I think got a year or so on me. I will be 71 in August. Take care and enjoy the off grid life. I do most of the time!
I look forward to seeing the birds use the boxes. I use to build birdhouses with my 10 yr old grandson in Ohio. He sold lots of them at festivals for his college fund. I wish he was out here with me now building a bunk house. He is in college in Ohio and I'm in NM
I just came across your channel and I'm really enjoying it! I love how you explain everything and your sense of humor!! I've been binge watching all your videos and look forward to many more.
We always enjoy your videos, Don. One of the reasons your channel is so popular is that we all crave independence; you had the courage and were willing to invest the "elbow grease" to take hold of your dream and make it reality. We really appreciate you sharing your adventure with us!
Wonderful to see Jim and Jesse on your channel! Thanks for sharing the bird build. I would enjoy learning about what types of housing your birds prefer, should you decide to build additional bird houses for other types of birds.
I hope you have luck with your nesting boxes. We have to look out for our birds. There is alot of bird activity in my back yard, but it is still a bit cold for nesting. 🙂👍👍👍
Hello Don, Love your information about the Lucy bird and box. I love Jim and Jessica. I too would love to meet them . It was good that you enjoyed your visit. 💕Nonnagrace
So delighted you enjoyed learning about Lucy's Warbler. They are a lovely species for sure. Yep was fantastic to catch up with Jim and Jess. Thanks again!
I think I found you through Jim and Jessica (TH-cam algorithm). I was tickled to see this video today and see them visiting you! I think of all the off grid people, you are the one I identify with the most with your knowledge and love of flora and fauna. Big Thumbs up Don! 🙂
A little trick is to turn the nail upside down and tap the hammer on the point of the nail to flatten it out just slightly. This will make it punch through the wood as opposed to splitting through the wood, and likely your wood will not split.
I absolutely love that nest box, I'm going to try my hand at that. We have green warblers out where i live, and we love Jess and Jim from the Green Dream Project as well. 😊💐🕊️
I have pre-drlled holes for nails and screws. My dad taught me that if you hammer the point of a nail on a rock or hard block , to dull the point, it won't split the wood.
Also if you can make nest boxes to attract mockingjays they will be the protectors of all the songbirds. Make the nest box naturally as well and maybe even incorporate a few dried Vines, because they also like to be stealth. Hide it in a tree. 😊💐🕊️🌹🙏

Good show Don, Jim and Jessica are amazing. I bought a property near Perris in 1980 that was littered with old lumber that was salvaged from March AFB, I built a barn that is still standing pre-drilling everything. Another trick that I learned to stop splitting is to flatten the sharp side of the nail or use screws. I must have missed an episode, what is your solar system using for batteries and controllers or do you just have the solar generator?
I love you life style! with all this beautifull wild life in your yard, this is a dream life!, I hope someday I can make my dream come true I'm from Argentina
Good on ya, Don. We all need to follow your example. I just read an article - Nearly 3 Billion Birds Gone. A new study finds steep, long-term losses across virtually all groups of birds in the U.S. and Canada. Nearly 1 in 4 over the last 50 years.
I'm so glad to see you living your dream! It was nice to Jess, Jim & Crew. I like it one my favorite TH-camr's introduce to some one new. TH-cam suggested your video. I'm so glad they did.

Actually I pre-drill for nails all the time because of arthritis in my hands. Pounding with the hammer is far less painful that way. Also, it helps keep wood from splitting near the end of pieces, just like with screws.
Wow nice boxes there Don they look good i pre drill timber when i do wood work you have to i use long nails in the boxes or what ever i made i did did it when i made my computer desk hahahah you met the guys i like watching to you do a great job there Don thanks ok

I have lived in Cochise Co for the since October 1994. Before that I lived in the area in various places as a young child, school kid, young married woman. I'm 83.5 years old. Twelve and ten years ago the lowest ever recorded temperatures in Cochise Co were recorded at zero or a couple of degrees above. The lower parts of the county gets down into the teens and the rest into low 20's. It doesn't stay down that low all winter. Temperatures move all over the place. High's can be up to about112° once in a while. I don't remember the usual number of days we are above100° Generally we are 5° below Tucson and at least10° below Phoenix. Cochise Co has some of the most stable weather in the USA. We do have a lot of wind, some quite high. Hope this helps.
Tony my area is very different than Flagstaff. It's very windy here for a lot of the year. Cold means that it's down to 20 sometimes but not often. Snow happens in my yard but rarely. Mostly you see it up in the mountains. Summers are much cooler than Phoenix for example. A few 100+ days but not many. Overall pretty decent climate.
I loved the video and would like to see more bird stuff. The builds do not need to be big projects to be worthwhile. I am out in the 29 Palms area and want to make some of the nesting boxes.
