Sonar Basics: How To See Fish

  • This quick trick is the difference between seeing all the fish under the boat and never knowing they were there. Sonar isn't self explanatory but with a single adjustment you can change that for good! Tim explains how to change sensitivity and what to look for on your screen. Whether you're using top of the line gear or just an entry level unit, this information will help you see more fish.
    The key to sonar is understanding sensitivity. Sensitivity that is set too high becomes so cluttered you can't see the fish through the mess. Conversely if sensitivity is set too low you'll spend all day staring at a blank screen. Finding that perfect balance requires adjustment but once you've dialed it in you'll know every time a fish passes below the boat.

    Great info that will help put more fish in the boat. Funny thing is so many people have expensive graphs with all types of features, but we never take time to master them....I was one of those people for a long time...now I put more fish in the boat by understanding my electronics.

    THANK YOU! This video (and other electronics videos) are probably the most helpful on TacticalBassin. I love the buyer's guides, underwater videos, and goals videos (speaking of, will we get a goals video this year?), but this is probably the most helpful. I don't have anyone in my life that fishes the way I do. I work in technology where almost everyone hates the thought of fishing. Ive never had anyone to teach me how to drive a boat or read electronics and it has been a huge difficulty for me to do so. This video really broke things down and made it simple. I really appreciate content that breaks it down for the weekend angler just getting into the bigger toys.

    I just appreciate everything you guys do to help us all improve as fishermen. I know people thank you all the time for all you do, but I just wanted to say it again. You guys are what fishing is all about. I appreciate how authentic and genuine you are. You break things down in a way that anyone (even me) can understand. My fishing has improved tremendously all thanks to you. Your dedication to producing quality videos 3 times a week is so very appreciated. It's just awesome. My little way of thank you is using your links to buy from Tacklewarehouse and even taking the time to watch the ads on your channel. It's the very least I can do. You guys stand apart from anything else on TH-cam related to bass fishing. Anytime I want to learn anything about any technique, I can just search your videos. Thank you. You guys are truly awesome. I hope I can shake your hands one day in a face to face.

    awesome info thanks. Next topic, if you find a school or some fish you would like to put in the boat, how do you target them? Or cast to them? do you create a way point then circle back around? Drop strait down on them? stop the boat and start throwing? sometimes i cruise over what looks like some decent arches and can't seem to capitalize. Thanks .

    Thank you for the video, I truly appropriate these how to videos you guys are knocking out. I got a few question for you when it comes to the Hummingbird sonar I have the Helix (Waiting on the Gen3's to upgrade). I live in Vegas and fish Lake Mead on the regular but I have noticed when I get above 6mph my hummingbird lights up like a Christmas tree up and down the water column. Once I get above 20 mph the depth finder is basically garbage (jumps from 290 ft to 5 ft then back to 490 ft and back to 2 ft) Needles to say that gets a bit hairy when I'm out night fishing in the pitch darkness. I'm about 2 feet from the main prop and it's set tight and sealed with silicon. I really want to turn off the rookie Fish ID but since it acts up I stay going rookie with that ID lol. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this fairly common with the Hummingbird Helix's? I'm gonna play around with the sensitivity this weekend to see if that helps out a bit. Thank again to anyone that can help a fellow fishing bother out. Bend rods & tight lines to all!

I've got a ton of money in electronics but I am not sure I am getting the most out of the investment. What do you do with the contrast ? Is there any correlation between contrast and sensitivity ?? Are there there any basic settings related to frequency to maximize what you can see ?? I typically fish very clear water avg maximum depths between 40 to 80 feet. Thanks Nick

Down-scan by itself is like having one arm.....you can hook a fish but when you want to CATCH a fish you need 2arms (+ hands). The ONLY thing is when you DO GET brand specific is when you want to control an electric motor WITH your sonar. Lowrance is MOTORGUIDE motor. Humminbird is Minn Kota motor. What is the absolute MINIMUM depth you would use traditional 2D on the Delta, specifically fishing for large mouth? Im trying to prove a point to a buddy. 😁
    The area he fishes consistently is about a mile long slough with numerous docks, laydowns etc and has a maximum depth of about 12ft with an average of 8-10ft.

    • @kayakfishingforpredators9107
      @kayakfishingforpredators9107 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MatthewLeipeltCMT i should say ALWAYS use SIDESCAN 2D and only 2D DOWNSCAN when you want precise scans on specific points of your interest, like depth/ bottom contour. Sidescan shows more around your boat in one drift, downscan is more precise but only shiws 1/3 of the botom compared to depth.

SIDE SCAN SHOWS L+R (in normal mode both sides) with your boat in the middle moving from top to bottom on the screen.DOWN SCAN IMAGE shows under the boat moving from left to right on the screen.The wider the range the more time you get to interpretate WHAT you see but gives at the same time LESS DETAIL. Maybe the position of the arches compared to the bottom can reveal something but that’s all in the experience of the fisherman’s eye.
