Why the hell do VW need that long if they have the whole thing designed and it's not running on a new platform (or is it?). Certainly the best ID, yet.
Do not worry, 2025 is of course a joke. It will be 2027 or better 2030. We are talking about VW. Announcing and promising since forever. I´ve seen the BUZZ concept somewhere around 2012, supposed to be on the road by 2016. Or the ID3, nothing like promised, 3 years late and without software. Nahhh, this is a model shell to show something on the motor show. Nothing more.

In fact, I have this book about the Golf IV and the concept drawings of it in 1997 kinda look like the ID.2all 🤔 It's like they dreamt big in 1997 and have finally achieved their desired design xD
By the time this comes out 5 Chinese companies will have made it obsolete. I'm really getting tired of these concepts that are "planned" for the "future". It all feels like a bunch of legacy companies finding themselves behind trying to play catch up and having to rely on publicity stunts.
Ive owned 2 ID4s since they were released. I never minded the crappy UI controls until I broke the screen on my 2nd one. A small piece of wood slid into it during a fast stop. What happened next was very telling. Ordered the part and because the 2023 model had just come out there were no screens to be had. This was in winter this year and by losing the screen I lost every climate control in the car. The only choice I had was to try and say "ID please turn on heater" in the month it took to get a new screen that control worked exactly once. I could double tap the seat heaters which was the only heat in the car but could not run the defroster or any other heat. The screen was repaired eventually but I saw the severe weakness of the ID control design. I still have it but I did buy a Toyota BZX4 which I have grown to love the simple climate control buttons. If VW can get away from everything running on the screen like you suggest here with the GTI I will for sure get one (if they come to the US).
By the time this is being build, if it ever gets build, Tesla will have a Model 2 or 1, simply Tesla, on the market. VW is so far behind and looses so much money, it will be interesting to see whats left in 2027 or better 2030 when this is suppose to come.
Germany auto OEMs have still been slowing down their EV efforts across the board - hopefully this doesn't get caught up in it. I think it'll struggle to compete with the MG4 X-power too.
@esm7708 Unless they build it in China. The standard range MG4 is just under 27k, but the X-power is 36k, so we'll have to wait and see. Who knows what battery prices will be in 2-3 years!?
@esm7708 Indeed. To be honest, if VW wants to go down the nostalgia route, they should bring out a beetle EV based on the original design as far as possible.
Best I can say atm is 'interesting'. Hope they keep that handle free back door design. Adds an element of 2 door coupé to an otherwise boring 4 door design. Would much rather them design an EV based around the most recent Scirocco design.

We bought a citroen c4 1.6hdi grand Picasso. I've got back to diesel guys. No more huge loans and endless worries! We just drove to Poland and it was easy.
Polestar just changed their single motor to RWD and changed the bias of the dual motor car to be more RWD where before it was more evenly split (we have that dual motor performance version and it's so much fun). No idea why they wanna stick with FWD while going EV for single motor cars when RWD will always be advantageous.
Depending on range I do like the look of this. Likely between this and Tesla Model 2 for my first electric car when my current lease runs out in a few years.
Yes but it does have... *checks* oh... 0% of the charm of the original layout and design, they didn't even copy the classic look everyone liked and would 100% of bought, or any useful aspects. Unless I misunderstood and the original was insanely expensive and not fit for purpose. Yeah. I can imagine the VW camper fans were pretty disappointed by that.
@@Zoyx I think the problem is that VW fans wanted a new version of the same thing. That would at least have justified a price hike. So it's neither cost effective, nor a good design. No reason to pay more for it. If you wanted to replace a completely different vehicle to the original bus, that's a different proposition entirely and it's also not suitable for that. They shot themselves in the feet first, then the face. I hope it helps bankrupt them personally.
@@Zoyx doesn't need to have an air cooled antiquated ICE engine to be lower price than it is. By a substantial margin. It's just supposed to be a box on wheels with a low power engine. Fact. VW put no engineering or production effort into this. None at all. It's a joke.
So I can't really understand, the ID.2 is it basically the electric Polo, and the ID.3 the electric Golf? Or is the ID.2 the new Golf and the ID.3 a bigger size? It's difficult to judge the size of the thing next to Jack because he's huge
I don't know why they're waiting years to release the ID2. They're a legacy carmaker with the financial kick to prioritise a cheaper mass market car. Tesla needed to sell super expensive kickstart cars to build their brand and bank balance, but a company like VW delaying cars like this which will appeal to many more people in design and price, just doesn't make sense. Get it built already!
Tesla needed to start with more expensive models, that was their master plan. They now sell the most popular car in the world and make money hand over fist. The Model Y beat the Corolla in Q1. The expectation is that their own budget car will come out when the Mexican Gigafactory comes online however that's just guesswork until it happens. For all we know they might start with commercial vans in the same way they focused on the Tesla Semi and for the same reason (the fossil vehicles produce wild amounts of pollution, so the same batteries in a Semi takes out more pollution than the equivalent number of passenger cars). It's impossible to understand why VW, Stellantis and GM are doing so badly at this. But I for one won't be sorry to see any of them go.
@@jonevansauthor dude, exactly. By twiddling their thumbs they stand to lose market share year on year while they release car after car which is prohibitively priced.
EVs are expensive to make - people won't buy an expensive small car in sufficient numbers. That's why you are getting lots of expensive SUVs (middle-class buyers) VW are hoping that by 2026/27 costs will have come down, otherwise they are going to lose a shed load of money.
@@louishiggins8881 that's not how it works though which is why we expect they'll go bust. Prices don't just come down over time. Finally a good-looking ID. The tinted windows and perfect lighting in the studio make it look clean like a 3D-model. The only downside is that start-date of 2025.
Oh man, I do love me a hot hatch; make it an EV hot hatch and I'm just beside myself. VW needs to make this ASAP and bring it to the US this time!
Would you buy it without a tax credit, at likely 40k+(based on current gti prices) and with 220 or less epa miles of range though?
The autofuegel channel guy said his sources qouted about 220-240 miles wltp, minus another 10-15% off that for the epa range.
@@4literv6 That range is a bit rough, and $40k seems a bit high based on the EUR price. If it were in the low $30k range I'd consider it even with 200 miles of range.
@@human_brian it'll be built in Spain though, so ad import tariffs and currency conversion rates.
Plus look at current ice gti prices in the U.S. most near me in ATL are 35-40k+ depending on options without dealer markups.
Some even more than that. It's a low volume cult following in good times type of car.
So far evs have carried a 10-20% price premium over a similarly specced out ice model even within the same manufacturer lineup.
But maybe by late 2026 or early 2027 vw can pleasantly surprise on the price? 🤔
Finally a good looking ID. ...Pretty!
Finally!!!! VW has remembered its roots in the past and all the greatness it brought the world! Here comes the electric hot hatch segment full on! Bravo VW, Bravo!!!!
Wait until 2028 for a FWD warm e-hatch? I already drive a Golf GTI and have waited years for VW to come out with an electric version. As luck would have it, MG just launched the MG4 Xpower so I’ve ordered that. Goodbye VW.
This is exactly what I have been waiting for
The ID.2all looks so damn good, I love it! I guess it's supposed to be an electric polo, but it definitely reminds me of my '97 Golf IV. In fact, I have this book about the Golf IV and the concept drawings of it in 1997 kinda look like the ID.2all 🤔 It's like they dreamt big in 1997 and have finally achieved their desired design xD
It needs to be 500hp to complete with mg4 xpower its more likely 300hp but its prettier than the mg and probably lighter so we will see.
By the time this comes out 5 Chinese companies will have made it obsolete. I'm really getting tired of these concepts that are "planned" for the "future". It all feels like a bunch of legacy companies finding themselves behind trying to play catch up and having to rely on publicity stunts.
Hey now this will have Chinese built batteries powering it don't ya know. 👍🏻😀
I hope the ID 2 and this concept make it to the states, with a sticker price not so bloated from the voyage across the pond.
Tesla's 25,000 $ model coming year 2025 from GigaMexico
By the time this is being build, if it ever gets build, Tesla will have a Model 2 or 1, simply Tesla, on the market. VW is so far behind and looses so much money, it will be interesting to see whats left in 2027 or better 2030 when this is suppose to come.
Oh yeah, thats gorgeous, i could get excited for that.
Always enjoy your reviews Jack. As a long time VW fan, I'm so here for this!
If they sell it looking just like this then it's a guaranteed winner!!
4:15 Those wheels touch on the original, super cool, Pirelli P-slot look.
Germany auto OEMs have still been slowing down their EV efforts across the board - hopefully this doesn't get caught up in it. I think it'll struggle to compete with the MG4 X-power too.
Certainly on performance but not on price if it's truly sub £25k
@@jeremyradford5103I'll bet my shoes this car won't be 25k.
@esm7708 Unless they build it in China. The standard range MG4 is just under 27k, but the X-power is 36k, so we'll have to wait and see. Who knows what battery prices will be in 2-3 years!?
@@jeremyradford5103 I suppose the problem is you can get an MG today and by the time the VW comes it will be out of date. Just like the ID3.
Amazing, to me a child of the 80’s it definitely looks like a golf to me.
Love the Fire Engine 🚒 Red colour.
It’s definitely what’s needed affordable cars
As a former gti 6spd owner, this might be the most interesting and desirable EV I've seen yet. I hope these get to the US sometime in the next decade. Looking at you, VW.
Great CG work here!!
This GTI looks achingly good. Front end design and stance is just awesome.
the old skool skin clocks would be a very cool touch, really hope vw pulls this off, as a former vw owner and enthusiast from a mk2 until after the mk5 i really lost the vw bug and the whole platfrom just lost its way in my opinion, wouldnt even consider a new vw now, but the gti ev for the company car list would sway me for sure.
Looks great but i doubt it will be anywhere near 25k, look that good when it arrives and be all that quick
German concept in 2023: "this is a sneak preview of the future spirit of our legacy hot hatch brand"
American reality in 2027: "you get to choose from Taos, Tiguan, and Atlas because you're boring losers"
Looks great!! Just need these from VW now, not in 2-3 years 😢
I really love the looks just hope VW sort out any software problems before it arrives as it’s a really lovely car in red.
I hope this will be awd around 600 horsepower
that thing looks sick!! 🔥🔥🚒
We bought a citroen c4 1.6hdi grand Picasso.
I've got back to diesel guys. No more huge loans and endless worries! We just drove to Poland and it was easy.
I want one. Hopefully they bring it to the USA
Does it have tow capacity?
Looks like that have nailed the design. Much better that previous 2 versions
I love the design approach with this one!
Hey Jack. Love your work 👍
MG4 is the best car on the market in it's price point
VW: Hold my beer
Exciting - for all the young and older kids! Looks really good.
What do I think? I fricking love it! I just bought a brand new 2023 GTI MK8 and now I can't wait for this car to come out.
Does it come with a Check Engine light on?
So it’ll be $60k OTD when it’s actually possible to get one?
That’s a very nice looking car! Hopefully that version won’t be too expensive! 🤞
This has yo be the best looking EV i've ever seen
Has lots of potential, i just can't see VW not screwing it up at this point sadly.
Why is an electric care being called GTI? What is being injected here?
As someone who's owned a MK4 GTI VR6 and a MK7 Golf R. I really hope this and a R variant comes to the states.
Damn, I was hoping it was RWD, like many of its rivals. That's how you convert a Jeremy Clarkson to electric motoring: RWD hatchbacks.
This is exactly what we need to see more of.
Finally they do what they are good at. Hope they do the software and pricing right :)
Hope it comes to North America and it is affordable. VW Buzz let me down by being way too expensive.
@@jonevansauthor - I love the Buzz. Almost everything about it... a perfect replacement for my 15-year-old Honda Element. But the price was crazy.
@@jonevansauthor - The original VW bus was budget-priced. The Buzz was not budget-priced. Did you want the Buzz to have an air-cooled engine?
@@Zoyx doesn't need to have an air cooled antiquated ICE engine to be lower price than it is. By a substantial margin. It's just supposed to be a box on wheels with a low power engine.
Fact. VW put no engineering or production effort into this. None at all. It's a joke.
Audi 80 GTE was 1976. I had one with GTI engine rhd. Great car. Three years before GTI 1979 rhd. One in the shed.
So I can't really understand, the ID.2 is it basically the electric Polo, and the ID.3 the electric Golf? Or is the ID.2 the new Golf and the ID.3 a bigger size? It's difficult to judge the size of the thing next to Jack because he's huge
Your right it's polo size (which is now the size of an older golf)
@@timscott3027 😢
Jack smashing another vid out of the park as per usual... :)
Great to see this. This is what electric cars needed. I hope the drivetrain and handling live up to the looks!
Well it's all very nice but when can I walk in to a dealership and order one of these?
That's why you are getting lots of expensive SUVs (middle-class buyers)
VW are hoping that by 2026/27 costs will have come down, otherwise they are going to lose a shed load of money.
@@louishiggins8881 that's not how it works though which is why we expect they'll go bust. Prices don't just come down over time. Tesla's new model has 50% changed parts, and that's in large part due to finding smarter ways to achieve the result and save costs.
They need better designs to improve their manufacturing, including better designed factories.
This car looks really promising
The retro-dash already sold me. I like this. Just Sportsvan-ify this and I'll be really happy.
Rear wheel drive would be a better choice for an electric GTI. Hopefully something similar to this comes to Canada.
So well said! Agree with everything! Looks awesome! Finally an EV that doesn't look horrendous! Excited to see what they will do with the ID.1 aswell!
That is the first good looking electric car i've seen. A proper Golf.
The first time I might be interested to buy a VW. Beautiful little car for everyday use and presumably pretty fast with the GTi badge.
I have a GTI 7 … this Id gti electric is the first electric concept car that’s appealed to me looks great in the red / black Might even be affordable!
Looks amazing, very excited to see this coming, design language looks right, it’ll all be about power and range for me.
