Is Narayana Murthy right in asking youngsters to work 70 hours a week?| The Hindu

  • Should youngsters throw themselves at work and notch up 70 or more hours every week? An IT industry icon, Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, certainly seems to favour the idea.
In China, the controversial 996 culture is prevalent, endorsed by the likes of Alibaba founder Jack Ma. In 2019, he said that if we love our jobs, 996 is not a problem. If you don’t, then every minute is a torture. He was referring to the work culture of 12-hour workdays - or 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week; which comes to 72 hours per week.
A CNN article from the time quotes him as saying: “The real 996 is not simply overtime work.” He is further reported to have said that everyone had the right to choose their own lifestyle but those who work shorter hours “won’t taste the happiness and rewards of hard work.”
There has been mixed response to Mr Murthy's comment. Some have questioned the wisdom in this while others, such as Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal said he’d agree with Mr. Murthy. JSW Group’s Sajjan Jindal too said he agreed with Murthy. “It’s not about burnout; it’s about dedication.” He also points out that a 5-day work week culture is not what a rapidly-developing nation such as India needs.
But does logging in all those extra hours benefit everyone? Maybe. Maybe not. How could working overtime impact your health?

I work on a ship where the crew are, most of the times, expected to work even 20 hrs* on some days continuously while the overtime remains fixed. Nowadays, with more regulations in place, this is becoming less common, but it still happens.
People endure all this because of the salary one gets paid while onboard vs. comparing himself at a land based job, which would usually yield a fraction of that. And mind you, this lifestyle as a young mariner is bearable, but as they get to 40s, they start quitting and looking for shore opportunities.
Adding to this, there are lesser and lesser students choosing a life at sea, as people see the social isolation and unaccounted working hours/long employment contracts/multi cultural food a major deterrent.
The point is this...Salary is important, but at the end of the day, the body/mind is not designed to look at a screen for 12 hrs a day or work in high concentration environment for 15 hrs..
No animal works as hard for food and shelter than a human.

    Sir,
Work-life balance is important, otherwise, it could be dangerous. More importantly, whether you are enjoying your work or not. Thirdly, every individual has his capacity, one can work for 12 hours without a problem but another can not. Lastly, stress can cause a permanent problem for an individual, therefore, companies can give freedom to their employees to choose working hours according to their capacity.

Pay for the additional hours. So people who want that can choose it can do it and get paid more and people who don't want it need not to. Most of our IT jobs are outsourced jobs. Working 10-12 hours on those jobs without any additional pay is just giving them cheap human resources for exploitation. But if you are an entrepreneur then yeah this can be definitely promoted. The govt should provide all the resources and support them to put in the max work hours. We need more entrepreneurs in our country not workhorses.

Mr Murthy for more or less, is a part of the so-called analog world within the digital world. When he was young, he did not have the support today's workforce has, whether online or offline, to efficiently do their work. Unlike Mr Murthy, who may have been required to go to the books for any problem, thus adding up the hours, today's generation can solve the problem with just one click online with the help of forums and all. Thus reducing the equivalent work done drastically in terms of hours put.
His 8 to 10 hours per day are no more than half of that today if you consider the same amount of work.
His company may have evolved with time, but it seems, his ideals have not. He needs to work on that. And nobody would work for someone else for that much time. He worked for himself, not for other companies. He carried the risk of promoter. His employees do not carry any such risk. Big difference.

For murthy, even that interview would be considered work. But for a normal employee a regular "forced" chat with his manager in corridor would not be considered work. But for executive leadership that time would be considered work.

First, let government employees work for 10 hrs a day, 6 days a week. They work for 2- 3hrs a day at their wish and will and various legal and illegal incentives. Anything more than 60 hrs a week is impossible, that ,too, depends on person's fondness, abilities and wish to excel on the subject, else you have th accept lesser pay, lesser work- happiness in your lesser means.

    (WORK - LIFE) Balance Debate-
    Explanation -
    1. One rule can't be applied to all as every individual is different with capabilities, dreams and nature.
    2. There are people who are extraordinary and ambitious like Narayan Murthy.. which may account only 5% of total population..
    3. So what about other 95% population who are very ordinary in capabilities and ambition..?
    4. What about per capita income and purchasing power..?
    5. If all people will focus on one job then what about other industries.. ?how other industries will get customers from..?
    6. Work life balance will balance all industries.
    Conclusion -
    1. Narayan Murthy philosophy is good but is only applicable for few people and not for the most of the population as it will create imbalance in society..
    2. Instead work life balance will improve per capita income and purchasing power of an employee which can become a customer for other industries..
    3. So work life balance philosophy will help accelerate economy of the nation..
    Indian constitution says
    सत्यमेव जयते..
So am I telling the truth..?
    Sincere thoughts by

Most of the people who earn a living by doing a job are stressed because it's a job they don't like.
Mr Narayan Murthy is there because he followed his passion to build Infosys. In fact someone like Mr Murthy would clock 100 hours a week or even more. Someone like Murthy's mindset would expect everyone to do the same. But the world where job is just to earn your living. A statement like this could make a negative impact.
And a video like this is bound to happen. 😊

Not a Big Deal. Who ever criticizing the 70 Hours Work pressure sitting inside their AC offices, should immediately rush to the front desk and ask their SECURITY person how much time they work per day. Most of the answer would be 12 Hours and that also without a week-off!! So nothing will happen, only the company will get more productivity and you will get good sleep at night.

Answer to your question - If no cortisol is produced, it will lead to auto-immune disorder. It will lead to too much salt cravings. no sleep, fatigue , weight loss etc. So, it's important to have adequate amount of cortisol as it does help in many ways. Too high cortisol is not good, just the right amount to get the benefits it provides.
