I remember when Mr Modi had launched the toilets building scheme as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, not only opposition leaders but so-called experts and journalists had ridiculed it and some had mockingly reported that the newly built toilets are being used as store rooms, cattle sheds, or for anti-social activities. They would also write how lack of water had made them ineffective, while totally ignoring the improvement at the ground level.
Now Mr Gupta needed a certificate from a foreign publication to discover the benefits that have flown from it. Reduction in infant mortality rates is only one facet of the manifold benefits. There are many others. I request Mr Gupta to send his reporters to visit distant parts of the country and send dispatches, instead of waiting for another publication to write about them.

Massive achievement for India. I remember how uncomfortable it used to be to reach our village in the evening or at night. Roads used to be crowded with women, and open defecation was not only a health issue but also a matter of social disempowerment. In the long run, an ordinary person will always choose freedom over a lot of money without social freedom. I believe SBM has given social freedom to our people, especially women. The current government may have differences of opinion with some, but the uniformity of plans and schemes is completely irrespective of a person's background. One can call for a caste census to show temporary adventurism, but what after that? Do they have a plan to accommodate those left out in Socio-economic empowerment? It's a big no (based on historical data of 60 years). In the end, political or economic empowerment alone, or even both, are meaningless without social empowerment, and schemes like SBM are achieving that.
