Erin...it was after watching this video that I decided to plant/grow Dahlias for the first time. Planted the tubers this Spring and now they are blooming along the perimeter of our vegetable garden and so I wanted to say thanks for the encouragement and insight into growing them. I was dragging my wife and mother-in-law outside after dinner the other night to see them and they couldn't believe how beautiful they are. My wife has already asked if we can expand them for next year and we definitely will. Thanks for all you do to challenge and encourage gardeners to try new things!

Your "Dahlia problem" is my luxury!!! Ha!
I say - keep it up!
What a wonderful color explosion for me to watch on this rainy day!!!
    Thanks for sharing!! ♡♡♡

Neem oil works great on spider mites. Use the concentrate, not the ready mixed (aka, over diluted) spray bottles. I have won many a battle against those little demons with neem oil. And of course the Dahlia Society would tell you to rip yours out: you'll have to buy replacements, which is good for the dahlia industry. Spider mites are only cosmetic; they don't affect the tubers at all. At the end of the season, prune them back and hit them hard with the neem. Next season, when they start to put on new growth, neem them again at the first sign of damage.

    • @Thorn99855

oh, so many gorgeous dahlias! I'd love to see a video of how you get them up out of the soil, preparation for storing, and how you store them, with pictures if that would be possible. A lot of people talk about it, but doesn't show (and I'm a very visual learner), so I'd really appreciate it. Also, including anything you do for them throughout the winter (if there is anything).
Thank you for a wonderful video!

This was my first year growing Dahlia's and I just picked up a bag from Walmart...but man a great flower! The blooms are huge, they last a long time and I have already had so many blooms and lots more to come. I want to thank you for the tip about starting them early in pots and I'm so glad I did. I bought one later and just planted it straight in the garden and I haven't had one bloom in it where as rhe others have been blooming for over a month! And the other trick I learned from you is to cut off the middle stem when the plant is about a foot tall to create alot of blooms. I was hesitant to do it but I am so glad I did!! Thankyou for the advice! Now I will have to watch your video on storing them....😊

I planted some that were already blooming this year and they fried in my hot sun even though they are on drip. In East Tennessee and mine have been gorgeous recently, 2nd week of October. Tried a mix of six in a tall cattle trough and was so pleased with the different shapes and colors. Those in the ground have done well too. No issue with bugs and no special treatment except organic fertilizer. I’ll be digging up to save for next year and add some more. I used to get Red Spider Mite on my Brugmansias when I was living in a subtropical city. The advice I got was to wet the leaves as often as possible & that is supposed to discourage them. It worked to reduce them & I believe it discourages them if you can start wetting foliage before they become a problem.

Erin, my little patch of dwarf Dahlias I started from seed got spider mites too!! It was a first for me. We were in the middle of wheat harvest so they got a little carried away. One plant I cut back pretty severe,, the others I left and have since sprayed twice with Eight from Bonide. Spraying from the underside up is sooo fun, but it has made a remarkable difference. They are bouncing back pretty good👍🏻👍🏻

Hello! I grew my first dahlias this year. HS KISS, American Dawn, Lilac Time, and Labyrinth. I’ve had a time. Labyrinth got frost bite on one of them(I bought 3 of each), then spider mites, then eventually it wouldn’t grow past 5 inches, so I dug it up and the tuber was rotted. All of them the leaves look bad like your labyrinth. Some better some worse. A lot of mottling on the leaves of all of them. I keep pulling off the bad leaves. American Dawn has bloomed the best. HS KISS is picking up. I had 5 blooms at once the other day. Lilac Time has a lot of buds but I’ve only had 1-2 blooms at a time. Labyrinth-the one I was most excited about-hasn’t bloomed at all. All 3 tubers have had problems-and I only have 2 left. One is drooping really bad since I staked it. The other has a couple of buds. I staked really late. Live and learn 😂. Anyway, since I suspect they all have had spider mites and probably other aphids, is it safe to keep the tubers? Or should I toss them. I almost decided to not do dahlias again, but then thought, I have put so much time in them. I suspect a lot of my problems are from not staking them properly. And I may plant them in more sun. They only get sun until about 1:00.

Great video and I love your colour choices - probably because they are so similar to my own favourites with the apricot/pink/cream shades! Until this year I had only grown one dahlia - Cafe au Lait - but that plant sparked off a new passion. Oh dear, as if orchids weren't enough! I did go a bit mad this spring and then wondered where on earth to put them all, so they all went into pots and tubs. Penhill Watermelon turned out beautiful, but not exactly the colours I was expecting as it was deep orange centres shading to golden yellow, like fire; and Table Dancer's rich purple flowers with white ends turned out to be beautiful, but smaller, acid yellow/limey green near the centres fading to a very, very, pale pearly-pink-white flower. I have no idea what they actually are but if I could bottle them I would! I can't feel disappointed because they were lovely (and I'd actually changed my mind about getting Table Dancer). Your video explains a lot about what happened to my dahlias this year. Red spider mite on my Cafe au Lait; weather so hot, with no rain for months, and not enough hours in the day to water everything. I also made the mistake of putting Cafe au Lait in full sun - I won't be doing that again. Someone suggested I try Spartacus if I could get hold of it. Well, I found one, and although it's not usually my sort of colour (nor are yellow and orange) I love the stunning red and caramel flowers (not much caramel on mine but the red is a deep red velvet and just... Oooooh!). The first flower was over 10 inches across. I also love the gorgeous pink and cream fimbriated flowers of Nadia Ruth. Oh, in the Penhill series there are also Penhill Dark Monarch - I'm waiting for the flowers to open on mine (hopefully before the frost hits); Penhill Lemon Queen and Penhill Autumn Shade, that I know of. Islander and Labyrinth are both on my wish list but were sold out everywhere, so hopefully next year, and thanks to you Breakout is now also on the list. I really, really, need a bigger garden.

Excellent presentation... I just loved watching it... I had to do it twice... Never get enough... Mix in some other type for example collarette, waterlilly, anemone... I love your HS dahlias... I also love the bicolor ones... Especially crichton honey(hope I got the name right)... If you remember where you ordered them?!...thank you... You made my day!!!... Thank you once again...

Your dahlias are gorgeous! I love dahlias all shapes and sizes also. I planted three varities this year and two of three are like yours probably 7 to 8 feet high. Another did not get very tall but I think I planted them to close together. Something is eating the leaves on mine also and I think it's probably more than just one type of insect. Thank you for the dahlia tour. I find the information you provide is always very helpful.

Thank you for this. I love dahlia walk throughs, or review videos! I've ordered a lot of tubers for my first year, recently!

My Dahlia has a lot of buds. I water them every other day. They don’t like heat from the AC as it burn their leaves. I staked mine and tied them with velcro ties to secure them.

I'm so glad you have the Penthill Watermelon--I've been wanting to try it, but was unsure about size, etc.
WOW--it is impressive. It will be added to my garden next year. So so lovely.
Sorry about your Cafe Au Lait. I've had a LOT of mislabled items this year--though all in the vegetable garden.
    It happens, but so disappointing.

Just love your beautiful dahlias, Erin! I started mine early in pots (per your video) and they have done really well this year. Except for all the earwigs 😠 I have to go out & check every flower 3 times a day & trap them with my jar of soapy water. Those beautiful blooms are worth it though. Great video!

I grow Dahlia in central Florida, they bloom in winter but flowers are just 1 layer and much smaller than they are supposed to be in northern zones

Hi Erin, I joined your channel this spring and have been watching your videos. I was really looking forward to the dahlia tour. One thing I was hoping you would cover is what you use to stake them. Is there another video you have that covers this?

Three years ago, I had the problem with Dahlias not being what the label said. And I also garden in flip flops and we do have poisonous snakes here in NC, but I do try to watch out for them.

Last summer, I planted a mix of dahlias. I could not believe how beautiful and plentiful they were. My Facebook garden page is filled with these beauties. I am located in Boston. Next summer, I will have a mix of cafe au lait collection and dinnerplate mix. They are easy to grow. You can multiply with the tubers they produce.

Such stunning plants!!! I could look at them all day long...
Thanks to you, I bought a lot of dahlias this spring, unfortunately only a few of them came up (not enough attention at the beginning? Maybe because I can only garden in containers?), but those that did, were amazing and I'll definitely plant more next year and maybe some will come up again for me (I won't store them, I'm in a hot zone).
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!! 😊

I have never grown Dahlia's before so your tour was an eye opening for me so I'll try a few next year. But will ask do I have to dig them in the fall as I am zone 8b and I'm 80 years old and I have gardened for the past 40 years as my work is in plants and shrubs, and tree's as a landscaper.
