    Neem oil works great on spider mites. Use the concentrate, not the ready mixed (aka, over diluted) spray bottles. I have won many a battle against those little demons with neem oil. And of course the Dahlia Society would tell you to rip yours out: you'll have to buy replacements, which is good for the dahlia industry. Spider mites are only cosmetic; they don't affect the tubers at all. At the end of the season, prune them back and hit them hard with the neem. Next season, when they start to put on new growth, neem them again at the first sign of damage.

    I love the ball dahlias! Keep buying them! I’ve tried growing dahlias for the past several years and have never had a fabulous experience. I planted some that were already blooming this year and they fried in my hot sun even though they are on drip. I also have a really hard time getting anything that says, “dinner plate” size to bloom bigger than 3 or 4 inches. I think I need to keep working on it. Thanks for your inspiration!

    In East Tennessee and mine have been gorgeous recently, 2nd week of October. Tried a mix of six in a tall cattle trough and was so pleased with the different shapes and colors. Those in the ground have done well too. No issue with bugs and no special treatment except organic fertilizer. I’ll be digging up to save for next year and add some more. Thank you for showing us your gardens - they are truly beautiful and show the results of your passion.

    I have had a super bad spider mites problem this year. Spraying with neem based products does help but is not perfect. My Labyrinth all came up White, which tells me I was not sent Labyrinth. My Belle of Barmera and Islander are just gorgeous and most of my dahlias have done beautifully even though I had to plant them in containers this year. Loved your tour and next year I am going to plant more ball dahlias for sure.

    Erin...it was after watching this video that I decided to plant/grow Dahlias for the first time. Planted the tubers this Spring and now they are blooming along the perimeter of our vegetable garden and so I wanted to say thanks for the encouragement and insight into growing them. I was dragging my wife and mother-in-law outside after dinner the other night to see them and they couldn't believe how beautiful they are. My wife has already asked if we can expand them for next year and we definitely will. Thanks for all you do to challenge and encourage gardeners to try new things!

A lot of people talk about it, but doesn't show (and I'm a very visual learner), so I'd really appreciate it. Also, including anything you do for them throughout the winter (if there is anything).

    Hello! I grew my first dahlias this year. HS KISS, American Dawn, Lilac Time, and Labyrinth. I’ve had a time. Labyrinth got frost bite on one of them(I bought 3 of each), then spider mites, then eventually it wouldn’t grow past 5 inches, so I dug it up and the tuber was rotted. All of them the leaves look bad like your labyrinth. Some better some worse. A lot of mottling on the leaves of all of them. I keep pulling off the bad leaves. American Dawn has bloomed the best. HS KISS is picking up. I had 5 blooms at once the other day. Lilac Time has a lot of buds but I’ve only had 1-2 blooms at a time. Labyrinth-the one I was most excited about-hasn’t bloomed at all. All 3 tubers have had problems-and I only have 2 left. One is drooping really bad since I staked it. The other has a couple of buds. I staked really late. Live and learn 😂. Anyway, since I suspect they all have had spider mites and probably other aphids, is it safe to keep the tubers? Or should I toss them. I almost decided to not do dahlias again, but then thought, I have put so much time in them. I suspect a lot of my problems are from not staking them properly. And I may plant them in more sun. They only get sun until about 1:00.

    This was my first year growing Dahlia's and I just picked up a bag from Walmart...but man a great flower! The blooms are huge, they last a long time and I have already had so many blooms and lots more to come. I want to thank you for the tip about starting them early in pots and I'm so glad I did. I bought one later and just planted it straight in the garden and I haven't had one bloom in it where as rhe others have been blooming for over a month! And the other trick I learned from you is to cut off the middle stem when the plant is about a foot tall to create alot of blooms. I was hesitant to do it but I am so glad I did!! Thankyou for the advice! Now I will have to watch your video on storing them....😊

      I epuld look for reputable buyers in your local area. For example, if you lived in Oregon I would tell you to go Swans. Another good resource is to look for your local Dahlia Society (even though I am steamed at what the American Dahlia Society told Erin right now - your local club should be a lot more helpful to you.😅 Unfortunately, I am guessing that many of them are not going to have shows this month for visitors to go & view the different Dahlias.☹ They should still have websites or way of getting ahold of Dahlia club members for answering questions).

    Spider Mites - bastards!!!! I'm in Oz and have had a problem with them since the fires - they love drought conditions and thrive in them. I had to replant all of my house/container plants and keep the soil well watered and apply lots of Seasol to condition the soil and Echo Oil in a diluted form (you have to have the right quantity) and continue to spray the plants. My Hoyas have been particularly affected. I'm growing Dahlia's now in containers on the deck and will keep an eye on the soil and foliage as I go But as the new growth with my plants is coming through (as it's now growing season) I'm noticing a huge improvement. I am also going to be introducing natural predators this year. We are coming into a La Nina weather pattern in Oz now so I'm hoping that will assist in eradicating them at least for this season.

    My first year for Dahlias. I'm zone 8a in central Texas and now I'm addicted! You have the most gorgeous Dahlias. I'm so envious but challenged as well. Thank you so much for the tour. 🥰👍

      How did your dahlias do? I’m also in central Texas and am trying them this year and am terrified the heat will kill them before they bloom!

I will definitely be planting so many more next year... and saving what I’ve got this year, thanks to you! Thanks for the inspiration!!

    My first year growing Dahlias. 3 different kinds. Dinner plate was one, yellow and it was outstanding! Just gorgeous, all of them. Hope i can store these and have them again next summer. They seemed to love the spot I choose for them.

    Just love your beautiful dahlias, Erin! I started mine early in pots (per your video) and they have done really well this year. Except for all the earwigs 😠 I have to go out & check every flower 3 times a day & trap them with my jar of soapy water. Those beautiful blooms are worth it though. Great video!

    I tried Labyrinth for this first time and couldn't figure out why the leaves started looking odd. Turns out they have spider mites, too. Thank you for this video and helping me solve the issue. Question: If I pulled the dahlia could I still winter over the tuber? Or would I need to toss the whole plant to stop the spread? Thanks again!!

    • @197megha
      @197megha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same problem too, but I don't think that you should dispose the tuber..

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Josey Suiter I think if I decide to get rid of it I will cut it off so there is just stem and let that stay until it’s the propeller time to dig. No idea if that’s the right call but I think might lose the tuber otherwise.

    WOW! So beautiful. So many of the ones you’ve grown I already ordered for next year... now I need to add a few more 😍. I’ve got some dahlia goals! Our dahlias were horrible this year. Super leggy, small leaves, spider mites, and leaf miners! Also, dry and hot where I live and I know that played a role in the problems too. We’ll try again next year!

    I have never grown Dahlia's before so your tour was an eye opening for me so I'll try a few next year. But will ask do I have to dig them in the fall as I am zone 8b and I'm 80 years old and I have gardened for the past 40 years as my work is in plants and shrubs, and tree's as a landscaper.
