    I am mesmerized 😍
    The Dahlias you chose exactly match my preferred color palette, it's actually how I envisioned my garden when I bought Dahlia tubers for the first year this spring (though not quite so numerous, I have a much smaller yard).
    Instead, I got a spindly looking, powdery mildew infested mess, I had a few casualties, and I have yet to see the blooms from the Penhill varieties (bummer) and another dinnerplate, which I might have placed in too much shade (a spruce in the area cast a much larger shadow this year than ever before, last year that was a full sun location!). I will hold this video as my Dahlia goal for next year (yes, I will be trying again!) but who knows, I am in Italy and our summers are scorching hot and dry, so maybe that's never in the cards for me, but I will keep trying!
    Thank you for sharing, your varieties are just stunning 😍

    Amazing, all of them! This is my first year growing from tubers, thanks to you. I’m taking notes for next year already. Which need taller stakes, which need more room and which I want to buy. One thing I’ve noticed is some of mine have incredibly short stems. Like , I talking 2-3 inch stems. I had one plant that I bought last year that over wintered in the ground fine and bloomed great early on. A really short variety but I don’t know what it was. But it got horrible spider mights. I tried treating several times and then recently cut it all the way back. They were on my cosmos and I just yanked those out. God, I hate them. I’m going to look into thrips because I have one with odd looking foliage. Thanks for the tour!

It is cooling off quickly here and acting like Fall is just around the corner and All the Dahlias will be going to bed for the winter. My dear, l feel so much better, after watching your video. Yes, you are so right, this just wasn't very good year for dahlias. I live in SoCal, but same story. Not a lot of flowers, half of my dahlias just coming to bloom now, lost a lot of them to spider mites 😢. There was nothing l didn't try,...no use. Just like you l couldn't throw them away . What I did is, I cut off the damage plants almost to the ground - and now more than half of them gave me a new young plans, looking very healthy. I am not hoping to get from them flowers this year of course, but will be very happy if I could save them. Thank you for sharing with us. Good luck with your beautiful garden and everything else

    You crack mne up geeking out over flower forms.😄 can one have too many ball Dahlias ever? I'm not far from Swan Island Dahlias here in Oregon and it's so amazing all the different flower forms and colors these plants come in. I love the ball type as well. Had a delughtful one years ago that was a yellow tipped with raspberry red "Little Bees Wings" the Old House Gardens sells still. I see They have Cafe' aulait too...no kidding yours is not the color you expected. I've not been much on big flowers but Break out is gorgeous. I grew some of the HS series a couple years ago. Really enjoy the foliage color and how it plays off the flower colors. Enjoyed the tour.

    Greetings from the UK 🌹🌹🌹 Every year I look forward to your dahlia videos. You have a lovely garden, Erin 💕 I bought Belle of Barmera last November. It has bloomed yesterday ( not fully though ) Its magenta throughout and doesn't look anything like the pictures on Sarah Raven's website... such a let down 😢 Bought Labyrinth and Penhill Dark Monarch after watching your videos and am quite happy with my purchase. The multicoloured tone makes it so awesome 😍😍 Planning on buying Firepot or Great Silence or American Dawn this November. Let's see...

    Your passion for dahlias is obvious, Erin, and rightly so! They are just beautiful; perhaps THE most beautiful flowers I've ever seen, and such variety, too! Unfortunately I'll have to live vicariously through you because I don't have the time it would take to grow them (zone 4) and I just couldn't treat them as annuals for what they cost. I was curious about them so I did a little research and learned a lot from the Farmers Almanac website. It said you could even eat the flowers and tubers, and that the tubers taste somewhere between a potato and a radish! Although, why not eat potatoes and radishes and keep those beautiful blooms where they belong, in a vase on your table, amIright?! Lol! =D

The other two varieties I ordered online and they are FINALLY blooming however they look nothing like what I ordered 🤷🏼‍♀️. So I would love recommendations on where to order and when to order. Spider mites: I have used a soapy water spray with some success with my house plants. Ya gotta drench both sides of the leaves and repeat once a week...

    I'm feeling a bit better about having to leave my dahlias behind when I moved two weeks ago, knowing this was a poop year for Dahlias means I didn't miss much. I kept stressing that I was going to miss the best of them because they just didn't take off while I was there. Of course this is a seriously dangerous video for me to watch, having already ordered more dahlias than I have room for, it looks like I need to add Breakout, and Crighton Honey, and HS Date, Peachy-Salmon Dinnerplate, Bacardi, Maya....UPDATE: I just had to come back and finish watching because my husband came downstairs and saw I was watching this video and this scene played out: HIM: Oh is that Erin? What's she doingwaitisthatagardentour??? NOPE NO NO MA'AM TURN IT OFF!!!! Me: What? What are you freaking out about? HIM: Every time she does a garden tour you buy things! You cannot watch her videos with tours anymore! Just the information ones. ME: Uhhhh, okaaaaaay (pffft, tours ARE information. Information on what fabulous new plant/tool/item I need to buy). Obvs. my husband was just joking around with me, he would never forbid me to do anything, but he did distract me with appliance shopping for the kitchen remodel so I did have to come back and finish watching.

    Erin, do you think the color variance has to do with fertilizer? In the watermelon dalia?

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juli Polito Color variance usually has more to do with light and temperature. Unlike some hydrangeas, color is not affected by soil acidity. Some varieties are more prone to color variation than others.

    Do you deal with earwigs in your dahlias and if so, how do you combat them?

    Erin I am so peeved!!! Not at you girl!😅 I am probably the one that told any questions on Dahlias to ask the Dahlia Society & then to hear that they told you to pull up your Dahlias just about did me in!!!😲😡😩 I have never heard of anyone belonging to the Dahlia Society that I have ever known yanking out multiple plants to avoid an outbreak!🙄
    I have been dealing w/ some health issues w/ my Mom so just now have only had a chance to sit down & watch this (almost 11pm on the West Coast) so I am going to call some people I know that are still w/ the local chapter we were w/ (Lane County Dahlia Society - Eugene, Oregon [the one my grandparents founded! I know, that was a little braggy!!😁]) and ask what it is that they use. My grandparents & Dad have all passed & my Mom's memory is not what it used to be so she couldn't remember what it was they used when we would get spidermites (& I've just been out of it for too many years😬😒). I do know that I have used Rose RX on some other plants (not Dahlias, not even roses) this year w/ spidermite issues & it seemed to knock it out so you might try that until I get back to you.
    But as to pull up your Dahlias, please don't as 1) spidermites though might make your plant look gross & cause all the leaves to fall off, will not kill a plant. So yes you should treat the plants & take preventive care to neighboring plants (including all plants/annuals planted in that area) to prevent it from spreading, but you don't need to kill a plant or remove it in doings so. Especially being that spidermites do not affect tubers, which brings me to point 2) Your Dahlia tubers will not have had enough time to develop to maturity under ground yet. So that, combined w/ the fact that the weather is still to warm will most certainly guarantee you will not have any tuber from this Dahlia. Lack of undeveloped tubers that will most assuredly rot bacause they do not have the proper temps to be stored in.

      Ramibu 2 No worries , friend. The dahlia society has always been my first stop for dahlia-specific info for specific issues. They have lots of other recommendations as well but recommended that the easiest way to deal with the problem organically (which is all I’m interested in) this late in the season is to pull the plants to stop them from infecting other plants. And I’m OK with losing these tubers if need be as I have oodles of other Labyrinths.

      @@TheImpatientGardener ok!😁 Haven't had a chance to call today yet anyway (as well, I'm sure these old time gardeners ways were not organic!😅). The Rose RX is a Fungicide/Miticide/Insecticide & Organic (that's why I was using it!). I do know that one of the other methods we also used was to powder a plant & the ground w/ Sulfar (which I believe you can also find in spray form) to suffocate them (especially on the soil so they didn't keep moving up plants). I'm sure DE would probably do the trick too - & both of those are Organic.
      Btw....one reason we always had Sulfar on hand - a trick my Dad used (which I'm sure he got from his parents) was after his tubers had been cut & cured, would dip them in the bag of sulfar. A light coating of Sulfar would help protect the tubers over Winter from getting moldy of any kind or fungus (which would rot them). However, I know you don't cut your tubers before storing for Winter, so this might not be beneficial to you?!🤷‍♀️

      Ramibu 2 Thank you! I’ve read about the sulfur but never used it.

    Hello 💜 How many inches from the wall do you plant the tubers??

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm ... it's pretty close. Probably closer than I should be but you can see I really shoehorn them in there. 8 inches maybe?
