This is the story of the Powder Metal Gearbox Initiative, a major collaborative industry development project with the prime objective to prove the concept, potential benefits and implementation readiness of Powder Metal gear technology in modern automotive transmissions.
Initiated and coordinated by Höganäs, the world’s leading manufacturer of iron and metal powders, and twelve leading technology partners, the consortium objective has been met: the world’s first 6-speed manual transmission with Powder Metal gear technology is up and running.
By having redesigned and prototyped different gears off-production tooling to optimised Powder Metal gear designs, PMGI has demonstrated the functionality and the full potential of stress, weight and inertia reductions while meeting typical OEM duty life cycle and durability requirements.
