I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a th-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

If you "smoke" your aluminum mold it will release easier. To do this just light a candle and hold the mold upside down over the candle the smoke from the candle will coat the mold and make the lead release easier. Take it from a old muzzleloader!

A lot of ppl told me that last video too lol . And that's a good idea . I figured the way it was shaped it would release ok .

I pour a lot of lead, from splitshots to jigs and never needed to "smoke" any of my molds.Get them hot 1st, and keep them hot.I'll pour 10-15 pours before starting my pours for keepers. If I get up and walk away to do something I'll pour it and let it sit on top of the pot till I get back, then I'll pour a few more till it's hot again.Never had a problem with them sticking or only partially forming doing this.

@@FishinNStuff You can make pyramid sinkers easily with just a coffee can and moist sand.fill the can with the moist sand and push the sinker into it and remove. Now you have the right cavity to pour your new pyramid.

Couple of ideas . As others mentioned, use a lit candle to "smoke" the inside of the mold with soot to help it release. 2. Use 14 gauge copper wire and make your own clips. I make them in an omega shape and they never come out. 3. Try rock hard putty to make a casting of the actual pyramid sinkers. You have to take a file and take off the embossed number and make sure it is pretty true before you put it in the putty. grease the weight or candle it to get it to pop out of the putty once it sets up. I use a scribe to put the number back on the weight after casting.
BTW the silicone mold was a great idea. I'm going to try that.

Tire shops used to be my main lead supply but every shop now has people asking for lead. I was a trap and skeet shooter so I have sacks of bird shot I had on hand and use it these days. Gun clubs often sell used shot for a low price, it's reclaimed.
I bought a round or cannonball type mold in 8 and 10 OZ for deep water fishing. If I put the brass Eye on the narrow end of the step drill mold the weight would be perfect for deep water Ling Cod fishing. Even the wooden mold would work. We don't care about pretty!!

that dross you are skimming off is mostly the additives for hardness. If you put a small amount of wax to the hot lead stir it in and light the smoke that comes off and all that will be left in the lead is a small amount of ash to skim off. makes the lead pour better edges on what ever you are pouring.

One thing about the wood mold is if you burn the mold 1st, it'll release easier. One thing about your mod, the unfortunate thing is is that these will roll where a pyramid won't. Great idea tho Rod!

With the the wood you start smaller and they get a little bigger but once it is charred the carbon slows the burn. I take a pyramid sinker and a bucket of fine sand with a little motor oil mixed in and stick the weight in 5 or 6 places with toothpicks holding the eyes in the middle. Reform holes each cast. Love cheap weight ideas thanks.

@@thesiq9764 I just made a mold for stick weights for anything from perch/gills to larger fish. The trick is to use two blocks of aluminum, drill the size you want down the middle of the seam between the blocks. You will need to put some locating pins in the blocks to locate them the same every time. Have been making lots of the smaller ones for perch. They can be painted, covered with shrink tubing of left plain.

Same style as this, just use a drill bit the diameter you want and drill it as deep as you need. Then drill a small hole through that the same size as a metal coat hanger. Insert the coat hanger through the hole, coat the mold and wire with a light coat of oil. Pour your lead into the mold and let it cool, then slide the coat hanger out of the weight. You will be left with a good bullet weight in the end. You can use wood for your mold and make many of them in the block of wood, just repeat the previous directions on every hole. Final step, enjoy your new weights and catch some fish👊

A few concerns to note about the lead safety comments. The respirator needs to have P-100 filters to be effective, and you must be clean shaven when wearing a respirator. It only takes 24 hours of beard growth to break the seal of a respirator rendering it ineffective. children should not be in the area when melting lead because their bodies absorb dramatically higher amounts of lead then adults do. Melting lead at home should always be done outdoors, because the vapours from melted lead can stay airborne for several hours and will contaminate all surfaces in the room where the lead is being melted.

My guess is, the wooden mold will get better by time and repeated use. The layer of charcoal will act as a protective layer/insulator which will make the mold smoother and reduce further burning provided that it's not removed or worn out. The wooden mold is also cheaper and can be made from any scrap wood for virtually nothing. Good video, thanks for the idea.

You can save a little more money by making your own wire rings by using pliers to shape scrap wire you have laying around or even find on the streets. Like paper clips or even copper wire if concerned with rust. Instead of buying brass rings.

You got that idea from that old Devo music video, didn't ya? I know you did cuz those sinkers look exactly like the hats they had on in that music video. Don't even try to tell me you didn't. Copycat! Oh yeah, by the way. I made some DIY slinky weights finally. I had a bunch of pellets that didn't shoot worth a darn in my air rifle so I used those and heatshrink. I think they came out pretty good and I've still got a bunch more pellets I can use. Obviously I wouldn't buy pellets just for the purpose of making slinky weights, but since I had them already and wouldn't be shooting them due to terrible accuracy I figured I might as well find a way to make them useful.

Why not making a plaster mold from the original pyramid sinker and make at least a dozen of them exactly as the original one? 😊
Another easier option is pressing the original pyramid sinker in a box of casting sand and then poring into them!.... I guess that would be probably the easiest and cheapest way.
I hope these would help and be useful.
Btw, the correlation between size to weight (for any specific weight) of steel to lead is slightly less than 2, rather.

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Your right about the lead weight I think is was mixed up thinking about tungsten , lead and steel . Ive done the sand molds and ive been thinking about using plaster. But none of em will out perform Aluminum except maybe steel

Try sand casting. Just push the point of the sinker into some tightly packed slightly damp sand, in a small box or even a plastic container. Remove the shaping tip carefully, and pour in your hot lead slowly. Add the wire stirrup before the lead solidifies. The sinker might be a bit gritty on the outside, but do the fish really care? Nah... they love it!
