    You HAVE to visit the American History museum!! They have Archie Bunkers chair, Lucy's polka-dot dress, Louis Armstrongs trumpet, lots of great stuff!!
    Also the National Archive museum is great too! They have the actual Declaration of Independence!

    I had an art teacher take us to the Natural History Museum on a field trip, and our assignment was to pick 5 things from any section to draw. I chose a gemstone, a snake skeleton, a dinosaur, a tarantula, and an owl. Best teacher ever and I miss her so much.
    You should totally go to the Spy Museum if it's open. Lots of really cool stuff there.

      Your choice of items to draw reminds me a little of a greeting card I gave to a girlfriend in high school. It said on the front, "I've made up my mind, I want you I need you it has to be you you you!" and on the inside it said, "If I can't have you I want an owl or a dirigible."

    Felt so homesick during your tour! I worked in that building for twenty years and would go wandering about looking at exhibits in detail every time I came in early for work. Watched the fish and brittle stars in that little reef aquarium. Looked on as one of the entomologists opened the hatch near the top and reached his arm down into one of the insect "rooms" to drop in some food. Wandered at leisure through the gems & minerals area (I was never that impressed by the Hope Diamond -- but the Dom Pedro Aquamarine is an absolute stunner -- I'm sorry you didn't give us a glimpse of that one as well). Roamed through that Objects of Wonder exhibit for hours, cumulatively speaking. By the time I'd seen or at least strolled past every item on display, something would have changed or been added somewhere. It is, I maintain, literally impossible to see every exhibit in every Smithsonian museum (there are several off the Mall, including the Postal Museum near Union Station, the Anacostia Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery / National Museum of American Art, not to mention the Cooper Hewitt up in New York City) in one's lifetime.
    Just two tidbits: that elephant in the Rotunda is affectionately called Henry. If you noticed the little taxidermied field mouse next to the deer in the Mammals hall, and the donor's name, Thomas Shaw -- that was actually Tommy, who caught and killed the mouse; he was the cat of one of the librarians in the Natural History branch of the Smithsonian Libraries. And the epidemic exhibit was up long before COVID -- only the COVID panel is new.
    Such wonderful memories. I miss the place dearly.

      It’s been awhile since I’ve been to the Natural History Museum, but I have a VERY clear memory of that epidemic exhibit. It was super dark and eerily quiet, except for the occasional hacking cough sound effect coming through the speakers. Like I said, it’s been years, so I may be remembering it wrong , but man that was an unsettling room!

    A funny story about the two dinosaurs Battle of the ages. About 67 million years ago, two iconic dinosaurs, a Triceratops horridus and a Tyrannosaurus rex, died and were quickly buried together side by side in a single grave. And both of them bear battle scars. So it was assumed that they had a battle but it's really not known if they actually did. Sorry the paleontologist in me pops out every now and then

    • @DGaryGrady
      @DGaryGrady 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good point! For all we know they were best buddies happy to be together forever, By the way, now that we know that a lot of dinosaurs, especially theropods, had feathers, it occurs to me that movies may have their vocalizations all wrong. In profile a Tyrannosaurus looks rather like a modern psittacine, or basically like a parrot especially in the shape of its head. So maybe instead of roaring like a lion they squawked and could be taught to say things like, "Awk! Rexy wanna herbivore!"

      Look at Jacob's older stuff too. It's a shame my single favorite video is only visible to his Patreon supporters. It runs just 2 minutes and in it he goes to see the film "It, Chapter 2" in a strange movie theater accessed via an underground hallway that's decorated to look spooky, and as he walks along filming he's suddenly scared into a horrified scream by the appearance of what proves to be a very cute female version of Pennywise, who gives him a peppermint. That's the video in which he reveals a very important tip about visiting haunted house or the like. "Remember," he says, "they can't jump scare you in the restroom."

    My first time (well second time, but I was baby and don’t remember it) in D.C was back in summer of 2015. I remember one of the African American museums was still under construction so we weren’t able to visit it but we did got to the museums of natural history, air & space, and the Native American museum while stopping at each of the monuments along the way. It was pretty fun, we went to the Hard Rock for lunch. Would like to go back to finally see the other museum and see any potential new exhibits as well. I think we did visit a couple of other museums but I don’t remember which ones. I also remember visiting the shrine and walking past the White House. Then we went to George Washington’s home, which is Mount Vernon. Then we just visited family friends in Maryland.
