    You know one man's junk is another man's treasure. Gina will appreciate not having the messes an outdoor kitchen will have in her lovely indoor kitchen. Love those piggies!!! Too cute for words, I say. Merry, Merry:):):)

    That’s actually genius repurposing the sliding glass windows, I have a bunch I saved from a home remodel, even have 1 with a missing pane that broke out. Nice planning for a multifunction place. It’s a kitchen, it’s a shed, it’s a greenhouse, it’s a place to park the tractor, emergency warming room; extra space for canning or guests, another bathroom. Mostly all made from repurposed materials and it looks nice. I like that you made the old windows slide in pocket doors, very nice.

    This was a very smart build. A very nicely done one as well. Kitchens have only been routinely built 'in the house' in the last hundred years or so. The vast majority of house fires start in the kitchen. Next is wood burning appliances. ALL of mine are 'remote'. No way would I risk burning up my prized/irreplaceable possessions, (much less myself), to save a few steps. 'Modern homesteading' is one thing, but foolish risks are quite another.

    Some sort of decorative large stickers on those front glass doors would be a good thing so somebody doesn't just try to walk through them. This has happened many times through the years nationwide and it would be a good safety feature. It happened to an associates three year old son and it wasn't a pretty site. I love the outdoor kitchen and all that you have done to it for sure. God bless.

    I like your outdoor kitchen- what fun!
    I also have some pigs and am in a similar climate.
    You may have this in another video, but I saw a fairly neat pig warming idea on victorian farm, which is on PBS en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Farm
    Essentially they dig a deep hole under the pig hut, place old bottles upside down to fill the flat bottomed hole, then concrete over the bottles. The bottles transmit the heat up to the upper area efficiently and then warm the slab above them.
    They did this in England so the warmth is closer to the top of the soil, but I figured that if one used lengths of plastic piping, deeper than our permafrost, then covered it over with cement that one would have a lovely warmer spot for the piggies in the winter.
    Come to think of it it may have been on the Edwardian Farm version of this show... can't be sure.
    Either way, I enjoy your channel!
    Best
    James

    • @singleman1986
      @singleman1986 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AL....Ummmm...the remote kitchen and outhouse should be the FIRST things built on a new homestead. One can always poke a temporary bunk in a corner. The way modern constructors build a house is exactly backwards. JMHO.

  • @madampolo
    @madampolo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe I commented on the preceding video that it looked like you didn't put in enough studs for the roof load. I heard you say in this video it was pier and beam construction, and I see that now. I didn't realize you had an attic and was confused when you said you were going to put in a hatch. I thought that strange to have a hatch through your roof. The one thing that I thought was good that you did is to put up the galvanized siding for the walls. I thought your stove was way too close to the walls once you turned it kitty-cornered. The galvanized siding solved that. Your homestead overall is wonderful, except for terrible winters with snow and temps below zero!

    I am thinking a sisal/jute mat just inside the doors would work nicely for removing snow in the winter and dirt from your shoes in the warmer months. It would save you a lot of sweeping to get rid of the grit and stuff that sticks to your feet. Have you thought about solar to run lights inside the kitchen? It looks great!

    I would think it would be good to install the top of the stove, You could store plates and cups which would automatically be warmed and keep some side dishes or pies warm while other things are cooking. Will you run a water line and valve to the outhouse for the sink when you get the rain catchment installed?

    • @LumnahAcres

    Wow you did get some snow, it looks beautiful. Thank you for the tour of the ODK, it is such a well planned and functional structure, great for socializing, harvesting chores, small build projects, and very versatile for the seasons. A water catchment system is a great idea! Building it on the backside of the ODK is great placement, building a racking system for the IBC totes to get them high enough for gravity water feed is a great idea also. Lumnah Acres is a real learning channel and inspiration for the Modern Steader! Hey you got to 15K subscribers!! Congratulations!! God Bless
