a lot of people always (rightfully) talk about how "warm and conflicted" the beast is, but i think one of the biggest things that the film got right which the 2017 version didn't is that the beast is also *really scary.* even watching the film as an adult, that "come into the light scene" is genuinely terrifying and you feel the fear and belle's voice as she realizes what she's about to spend the rest of her life imprisoned with. his human eyes have the capacity to be warm and understanding but also intimidating and horrifying at times, and that's a difficult balance to maintain in the same character. the talk of the gorilla references in particular also reminded me of the bit in that scene where the beast kind of huffs and you see the angry breath coming out of his nostrils. the 2017 film has literally none of that balance or nuance-- the beast basically looks like a teddy bear with horns as opposed to a creature that would genuinely scare someone.
I can't watch some of the 1991 beast scenes bc it triggers my PTSD. I remember being genuinely terrified at his temper

Briane Kay and you know, I find something unfair when the movie was made. What was unfair to me was Howard Ashman and Alan Menken only gave the Beast one singing part. They should have given him more.
