Thank you very much! I wish I was a little more cheerful when putting down the info, I thought about what to say a long time! really nice to hear your words! :)
My dad bought his 2001 f150 back in 2003, it is a Supercrew cab and I believe it's a 5.4, but since then, that truck has never let us down to this day! Very durable truck from that generation!
For whom it may concern. If your looking back anything from 96 to 2004 you can't go wrong with any brand of truck. Mine is little red a 2000 f-150 4.6L 4×4 585000km it's a tired truck I'll give it that but it's always got me home it's pulled just about everything that can be pulled worked the oilfield with a slip tank in back and cost me far less in parts than I ever spent in maintenance I wouldn't sell or trade it for the world. It taught all my kids how to drive and is still here to this day. If you need a truck to work for you this is what you need
The only thing I regret is not holding out for a 4x4! As a matter of fact, the same people I bought mine from, have a 1999 4x4 with 148,000 miles ( almost new! ) with no rust! I seriously thought about trading with them! But since I've has mine, I had so much done to it, that I really don't want to part with it! K&N cold air intake, a new heat exchange, a new windshield, new wheel bearings, a new axle, tinted the windows to match the rear glass, and brand new headlights because the originals were so yellowed with age, that I could drive at night with the brights on, and no one got pissed! Lol!
Lots of places you can get away without 4x4. I do end up using it a fair bit in the winter as we get mean winters up here in Alberta, but in a area without much snow I bet you'd hardly need it, a lot less weight and things to go wrong in a 2wd.
Love this generation F-150!!! As I’m the proud owner of a 2003 SVT Lightning. I get lots of thumbs up, and the truck only has 38,774 miles. Mint condition! 🙂
I own a 2002 F-150 with a 4.6 2 wheel drive 8-foot flatbed. As well as a 2003 f150 lifted four-wheel drive short box with a 4.6. absolutely amazing vehicles I have owned for years and don't ever see myself getting rid of either.
Impressive long tow! How big was your trailer? I think the rear end ratio is the big factor in reasonable towing acceleration for the truck, the 7700 3.73 really helps over the standard trucks 3.55. Newer trucks are really nice, but more, now then ever, value and reliability are sure important. Thanks for watching!
@@Kingsoupturbo only a 21 foot travel trailer. Did a great job towing the mountains of the Black Hills. Most people in RV parks have the bigger newer and much more expensive trucks. Ill keep mine thank you
@@travelingwithrick Black hills certainly have enough grade, and a 21ft trailer is plenty big! Really only the spark plug ejection is the 5.4's fault, newer trucks have even more, complex, issues, or are just painfully expensive, or are setup for comfort ride and not towing or payload like this generation F150 (especially 7700) you can pay for a lot of fuel saving yourself a 1000$ a month truck payment. Happy towing and thanks for the comments!
Wow that is impressive mileage! Lots you can do with that 600$ a month F150 payment the fancy new truck guys are dealing with! (mmm new trucks so nice!!)
I have a 2002 4.6. I just reached 186k miles on it, I bought it almost 2 years ago with 140k and it has been great since then. most I've towed was a 2500lb pop up camper though and it still pulled very well
If a hammer was reborn as a truck, this would be it. It just works without a whimper. It definitely shows you from time to time with crappy details but the drivetrain is solid. Parts are also so cheap, you could buy them without having to get a small loan. They’re also very easy to service as there’s tons of room under the hood. I’ve replaced the entire AC system on my 2000 XLT for less than $500. I can’t imagine what they’d charge for installing that. Great video, thanks for sharing!
You are totally right! other then blowing out sparkplugs, really not many design faults (can't be said for newer F150's!). Parts are so very cheap, and the capability is really not far off something a lot more modern. Mine is starting to rust in the usual places,(I keep patching it up) but especially post covid, with ludicrous new\used truck prices, this gen F150 is going to be around a long time. Nice job on replacing the AC! really need that with any kind of summer, and thanks for watching and the kind words! Have a great summer!
One of those just saved my life tonight! Got in a bad accident with my black 2002 f150 xl extended can had 176,000 miles until tonight lost control hit a concrete poll. Truck saved my life. Miss it more than anything
Wow a concrete poll has zero give! thats really scary holy cow!! glad to hear you're alright! I'd miss a truck that took a hit like that and left me unscathed too!
I have a 97 4.6 v8 triton and a 2003 5.4 v 8 as well. Change oil religiously. Plastic has dry rotted due to tropical weather. Otherwise still on the road
I have the 2001 super cab 2WD with automatic transmission and 4.2L V6. Adequate HP for the general use I make of it and on the highway I have gotten as much as 20mpg. I have towed a trailer behind it and the drags down the MPG dramatically. With cruise control long distance highway driving is a dream. The seats are comfortable and well suited for long hours in the seat. I bought it about 5 years ago and it had only 110K miles on it and now has 163K on it. Problems had been minor things due to age like the fuel pump failed, a front disk break piston failed and the ignition block failed. The ignition block costs $100 and is replaced by backing off two bolts, an easy driveway job. While not real high mileage time does cause deterioration. So I am looking at some steering gear and suspension replacement due to deteriorated bushings, I can hear some clunking. The worst, most difficult thing is the rear oil seal on the crank is leaking. A $40 part that the book says you have to pull the engine. A car guy I know says I could probably just drop the transmission and replace the seal that way, much easier. But I don't have a place where I can do this work so into a shop. I estimate that making these repairs will give me a vehicle that will last for many years as I only drive it about 3,000 miles a year now. It would cost more to replace it than repairing it and then I would have just another used truck. The mechanic who replaced the fuel pump said these things just keep running and I could expect to get 250K miles out of it. So if mileage were the only issue I would have a truck for the next 83 years. 83 years is unlikely but there is still a good chance this truck will out live me.
I have an 03 with a 5.4 Automatic. I find that if I'm on the freeway doing 60 mph I get about twenty one and a half miles to the gallon. At 130,000 miles I replaced my coil packs.
Nice!! I've really only ever gotten 17mpg on mine at highway speed, but I've never driven this thing at sea level either, only 3600ft ++.. Thanks for watching!
If it's running ok these trucks are definitely a buy. I miss my 2000 with the 4.6L so much. 225K on the odometer and while the engine had started the ticking sound it ran great and had zero oil leaks. When I got it I was getting about 12 mpgs but after a tune up replacing all the fluids, spark plugs, cleaning the throttle body etc. I was getting 15 mpgs in the city since.
Have the 2002 4.6 2v and it still runs great. Only 154k miles. I plan to run it another 10 years / 100k miles. No car note for 25 years keeping this truck. New cars and trucks are polluted with sensors and stuff to where it’s harder to Work on them.
+Kyle Hurling I totally agree man. I just posted a video simulator to yours on how these trucks hold up. I still love my 02 f150. all it takes is regular maintenance to get lots of life out of them.
+zig zag Thanks very much! I've driven all sorts of new trucks recently and although they are pretty nice, the cost\benefit ratio compared to the older Ford and what it can do, its hard to beat!
+Kyle Hurling If you compare them to Diesel models they are pretty amazing after 15yrs how little longterm problems they've had, who doesn't like a newer truck? even though they're safer the brand new Aluminum body F150's are still a bit heavier then this Gen, safer, nicer, sure sure, but still, this thing is so much lighter to drive then my 2011 Dodge 2500, I call it sports truck!
+Kingsoupturbo..i have one ...my dad has one..my bother has one...if i had the money i would have 10 of this generation sitting in my yard.....all three trucks are now around or getting close to the 300.000 mark....with no major mechanical issues....
I just restored one from crud to its former glory... spent 8k total for purchase plus repairs plus a ton of improvements, body dmg fixed, new paint job, but still no payments and I have a damn near new truck now. Its my weekend toy and I love it.
Fantastic! the reality is a 10k newer truck is often riddled with issues that aren't every told in the ads. So a totally built perfect truck that is a bit older is really nice~! (also the are so light compared to most modern pickups, hard to beat!)
I have a 2002 Fx4 with 206 k miles on it. We have a furniture store here in Louisiana. My parent's house flooded in Baton Rouge last August. After their remodel I loaded up near a house full of furniture into a bumper pull, enclosed 24 ft trailer and drove 4 hours from Monroe to Baton Rouge. Somewhere north of 8k lbs! Took it out of overdrive and set the cruise at 60 and let it work. No problems! For full disclosure there were zero hills (Louisiana) but I was still proud of Old Blue!
@@dumbwhiteproductions You aren't kidding! Wow it snowed a lot of overnight and cold! I'm heading across the city with my F150 to pick up a motorcycle from a friends house today, deerfoot is going to be sloooooow! Have fun with your truck!
I bought a used 2003 F150XL for $500, a few years ago. And it had four brand new tires. Guy couldn’t sell it, because manual transmission. I’ve put over 80,000 miles on it. So yeah.
same here, I love my 97 Expe 4x4 with 5.4L triton and E40D heavy duty transmission with 170K on it. 7years of owning: takes off from dead stop with no hesitation. ONly down side though: 2 blown out spark plugs which I fixed myself. Upgraded to KO2 33inch tires with daystar spacers in rear. and eliminated air suspensions: stupid nonsense. Strutmasters conversion kit is well-made. Bushwacker fender flares fits my truck perfectly. Important note: vehicle speed sensor(VSS) must be replaced if U notice rough shifting and blinking orange towing light on shifter. Good luck and have fun.
Nice! I just had the plug blowout myself, threaded insert later (and like 6hrs of work) and shes fine! I'm looking to sell this truck and change to a Expedition msyelf coming up! glad yours has been so good to you!
Same thing happened to me on the other F150, its nearly impossible with a proper scan tool to figure out which individual coil is bad, mine would only go bad after an hour of driving, just replace them all, the cost is minor compared to the time required to diagnose, nice job!
@@Kingsoupturbo Unbolt all the coils and pull the each coil away from the spark plug one at a time while the engine is running - (you won't get shocked if you only handle the coil.) When the engine DOESN'T bog down, it's either that coil or that spark plug that's the problem.
Just got an '01 F150 XLT 4x4, 182k miles. It runs and drives like a dream. The 5.4L is awsome, especially up here in the mountains of Northern California.
I just bought one and like it.1999 Ford F-150 4x4 ext cab 4.6 l,,,step side..... I had the front end completely redone under neath, new brake lines, new axels, ball joints, all the stuff needed. Drives tight with new shocks, relined front end. It will be a classic down the road 5 more years. Good video brother.....,! God bless.
Got my 97 w/ 5.4 for $2600 fully loaded minus the bucket seats(get the bench seats) and absolutely adore it, 203k and everything works well. Towed 5000lbs with mine at 5500 ft elevation and had no issues@65 mph, I’m a GM normally but couldn’t pass on the step-side bed, maintenance and the price
Sounds like a deal!! 5000lbs at 5500 feet is no joke! I did a similar tow in the rockie mountains @ 5500lbs too last summer, did really well! a tough truck! (amazing how even with so much tongue weight, the rear barley squats, back when they made trucks, more truckey
anything you did to it to make it last? I picked mine up about a year ago at 108xxx miles and im at about 121xxx miles at the moment. Haven't had to do anything to it yet, but scared to to spark plugs when the time comes again. Any tips?
Nice!! I just bought a one owner.-'old man'' 97 f150 3door .xlt..4x4...its got 150.000 on it and feels and looks tight and new..suspension etc xcellent too..
That was a pretty good review. My wife's 99 Durango had to cross over via the crusher thanks to a flood. We found the same truck, but 2wd and a 4.6. It seemed to have held up well over the years and it drove well. 115k miles on it with a few blemishes, but it still seems reliable.
I just scored a '97 reg cab 8' bed 2wd 4.6 liter with 47K ORIGINAL miles! Previous owner did all kinda goofy custom pinstriping and had a custom interior done, which i hate, but did install a nice tasteful set of aftermarket rims.I peeled off a bunch of stick on goofiness and had to deal with a bad evap system (disconnected it) and a bad vaccuum line(4$ fix). paid 4 grand has 1 spot of surface rust.So happy! 4.6 will run almost forever with proper basic maintenance.Had one @ work with ladder racks tool boxes and bed always full, and a 4x4. The 4.6 was still going strong at 264,000 mi. Only thing that killed it was our facility burning down.Truck burned with it.
wow cool! such low mileage! sounds like the previous owner really took care of it, rare for F150's, they seem to get beaten up often enough. Sounds like you got it all fixed up for cheap, very nice! only thing that can stop a 4.2\4.6\5.4 2v is the building burning down that its parked in!
@@Kingsoupturbo Yup just gotta finish removing hillbilly cosmetic BS. Alredy spent hours with a heat gun. Almost there.Previous owner was 80 yrs old.He bought it in '99 with 15K miles, I attribute bad evap and vaccuum kine to just plain sitting around
@@onemanghetto2429 Nice! I've done the pinstripe removal before too, not so much for looks that I mind, but degrading of the stripes over time. 80yrs old, thats the truck to get!! taken care of, she'll last a long time for you no doubt! score!
Score!!! one of the most reliable and capable years of F150. Tows nearly the same as newer trucks, same payload, good mpg and one other thing, what was it....oh right, ITS PAID FOR! enjoy!
@@Kingsoupturbo Heyyyyy thank you :) :) :) ive got a vacuum leak in the intake area somewhere right now but aside from that and maybe needing spark plugs I love it. Hope you still have the truck you like
@@FCT8306onTwoWheels Nice! that rubber line on the back commonly rots out, good time to do plugs and retorque them before you have a ejection incident! I still have the truck, just fixed up some rust and a few other things to keep it in tip top (mostly) shape!
I actually have one that has the 4.2L v6 with 2wd, 2002 supercab 6.5ft bed. Life threatening in the winter and gets the same mpg as the v8's despite being lighter and having less output. The only reason I got it was because it was meticulously maintained, had only a little under-body rust, and 80,000 miles. It barely tows what I need it to but ultimately works out in the end.
Nice! I saw a video of a guy with a F250 5.4 2v pulling 14,000lbs no real problems just slower, trucks are pretty rad that are new, but holy moses are they expensive! thanks for watching!
@@Kingsoupturbo I absolutely love my ranger but I don’t wanna use it as a truck after it blows up (I wanna coyote swap that little truck lol) Iv got my eyes on my friends old shitbox. Supposedly motor trans and rear end were rebuilt in 2019 so just gotta get the body lookin good. Thanks for the review of the truck
@@randytheracer3664 Rangers are sweet trucks!! Coyote swap would be pretty cool, or a LS, or a 4.6\5.4 or a 3.0/4.0 really! I've learned that just getting a truck working properly, totally stock, can be a challenge on its own, motor swaps can be a real pain (I've done a few on Supras). Great on gas and fun to drive, the 2.3 Ranger is a real treat, thanks again for watching!
They're decent trucks, but like anything else they don't come without a few issues. I purchased a 97, from a one owner older couple who actually ordered it straight from Ford. It was well taken care of but still had issues they decided not to repair since they bought a new one. The regret i had was the date of manufacture, 4/96, Ford made some middle of production changes and a few parts were different and hard to get, so those few things need some modifications to make it work. Like headlights, no one makes them for that production year, the fix is headlights for a later year AND the headlight header also has to be replaced. Also a few other minor things isn't the same either... but overall it's all the same as later years. I probably own one of the cleanest 97 f150's that hasn't had major body work, but starting to show its age here and there. I'm not complaining though, i got the truck pretty dang cheap.
Nice! I ran into a few of those early production trucks in the scrapyard, they're really different then the later ones, interior had similarities to the previous generation F150. Lucky you can get lots of parts for low cost on these babies from salvage yards like entire headlights assemblies! Just be sure to clean out those pockets inside the Bed that accumulate gravel to keep the rust away! Thanks for watching!
@@Kingsoupturbo not sure what pockets you mean?... but it does have a bedliner with zero cracks or holes. I've never pulled it off though, so i have no idea what the bed looks like except from underneath and it looks fairly decent. I've been meaning to pull the liner off to take a peak, just never got around too it. I am pretty sure they always had that liner on it, the previous owners were pretty particular about their stuff.
@@garyr7027 Hey there, under the bed is where gravel collects and it rusts from, right at the rear where the bumper attaches, there are like braces inside, they collect dirt, and in the front of the box, lower part, inside are more braces that catch dirt\water, all the boxes are rotted in my area from this, happened on mine too, blew it out with air and cleaning. Bed liners can collect water, or be totally fine, Depends on what climate you live in if this can be an issue!
@@Kingsoupturbo yes, it is starting to show rust in those areas, something I'm gonna fix when I get time and the weather permits. Some rust on the rocker panels and cab corners too. It's a 97, so it's to be expected, but i have seen much worse on newer trucks.
@@garyr7027 Totally! you'll find, like I did, accumulated gravel and stuff in the pockets, its amazing with such a basic design it lasts as long as it does. The crew cab short bed trucks seem to have a different bed design and I see way less rust on them.
I have a 2002, an a 2000 both v8’s .and I call mine a interstate truck. I like them bc I work between 10:00 a 7:00 am so I put a tuner in so I don’t have the top end governor. I set the cruise a 100 mph drop my load which isn’t heavy, re load and drop that load off and do it all again and it’s never ran hot or had any other problems for that matter.
Thank you, thinking of buying an 02 that was very well kept with only 102k on it. Asking price is 6 K. I can't afford to buy a new truck but at my age I just want one that's going to last me 5 years. It looks almost new.Nice to hear the magic number. How many miles it lasted taken care of.
Thats a tough one, for 6k you could probably get a newer truck, but the mileage is fairly low on this. I'd look at a few different trucks for the money, although these are pretty reliable generation, truthfully the newer F150's and Rams are a fair bit nicer and drive well. If the truck is in very good condition though and well maintained could be a real deal! good luck with your purchases!
I bought a 2003 Ford F-150 FX4 4X4 Supercrew 2 month ago cheap and it’s just super awesome. Truck has hard cover on the short box, has about 242,000 Km and well maintained. Had to get the safety done on it so spent about $1000, but still a nice truck to own and drive. It has a straight twin exhaust and that sweet sound of the V8 sounds even better on it. As poster said, it drives like a truck so don’t expect a crazy acceleration as everything is under 2000RPM, went above 3500rpm few times when pushed hard but it behaves well. I’m in Canada so gas prices are high but I will keep this old granddaddy of trucks longer.
FX4 supercrew is the king daddy of this gen I think! Its more of a low torque engine then horsepower, a solid machine, gas prices are so bad right now, I use my truck sparingly!
I have the exact same truck, 2002 5.4, fx4 in white. Im the second owner, and I bought it in 2016. It's my daily driver and have no plans to get rid of it considering it's only at 133K miles. Nice run down!
jus bought one,,,, the 2003,,,, had the 1999 F250 super duty, with extended bed, camper cover , quad cab, same 5.4,,,, kicking myself in ass since selling, think the reg bed, no camper cover, smaller cab, (kid's grown n out now), will be better mileage, n need truck, firewood, n auto work on side, car can't handle,,,, good job review, N think I'll be happy, too soon tell, 100%. thx share !
Excellent!! If you bought another one, it must have been good! Well kids might be grown but they'll be asking dad for help moving or something with his trusty F150 sooner or later!
For offroading. get the 1998-2000 expedition. The rear cab cover not only supplys space for more occupants, You have weight on your rear tires and they actually have an effect on grip. And its easier to find more powerful expeditions because most models came with the 5.4. Plus it is very comfortable.
Agreed! I'd probably spring for the 03-04 Expy's as well with independent rear suspension and the updated interior but still with the more reliable 2v 5.4 vs the 05+ 3v, I've looked at them lots, you can buy nice condition (nicer then most F150's anyways) trucks with spark plug blowout for a song!
Just picked up a 2003 f150 xl single cab stepside a few weeks back. Unfortunatly been nothing but trouble. Thought I found an awesome deal at $1500. Was told zero issues and that it would pass inspection. Got it home, parked in the garage for a week while I waited to get it registered. I then notice leaks from the axle and engine. Truck is a 4.2l 2wd. Pinion seal leaking as well as rear main. Goes right to the dealer and got the pinion seal and diff fluid done. Was told the rear main isnt bad as of now. Then had an abs light scanned, 3 codes. One says trans slip detected, speed sensor and airbag light inoperable. And then driver rocker is pretty well gone. Was still told it would pass inspection which the dealer said it wont. Finally got it registered yesterday and went for a drive and brake line blows. Im like it never ends. Has 204k miles, still runs and drives well but damn lot of repairs needed for a truck i was told is 100% ready to go. Truck goes to the shop next week for the brake line repair. Im repairing the rocker and should be good for inspection. Wont be a daily, just something to haul motorcycles around as i buy and sell. Hoping it treats me well after these repairs.
Cool review and nostalgic. I had a 97 4.6 4x4 with a lift kit back in the day. It was badass then, but honestly I don't think that body shape aged well. Today, in 2018, I think a 1996 f150 looks way cleaner than a 1997..
It was a controversal pickup truck design going all roundy, they went back to boxy in 2003, but I like the sloped hood, good visability! the pre 97 trucks are nice too!
Mine is an "02 FX-4 5.4 Super Crew, with the Off Road Pkg. At 247K I have had very little problems with it . Fresh Tranny at 224K was only $1700.00 U.S. Still a great looking truck, and if something major happens to the engine, I have a friend who will do a rebuild for less than $3000.00. I love this truck, and am planning on keeping it.
That was a friggin steal... I just paid 8,000$ for my 2002 FX4 5.4 styleside supercab. Now granted, mine does only have 76,000 miles on it and the body looks the part of that low of mileage. Considering people by me are still asking 6-7 grand plus for the same outfitted truck with 250 thousand miles I guess I got an okay deal. Likewise I play on keeping my truck for at-least 10 years.
A fully sorted (97-03)F150 is worth quite a bit of money, all the regular maintain things, new parts, clean body, I think they retain the value very well compared to the newer, nicer, but not as light or reliable (certain years) When you buy a less expensive truck, usually, there is work to be done.
Yeah, Im completely happy with my truck and I feel like it provides nearly everything the newer ones do, especially after installing the android headunit with all the features like nav, and the rear backup cam. Yeah ok, so it might be a little slower off the line, but its a fraction of the price of a newer one, and isnt plagued with problems like the 3 valve 5.4 can be.
I recently had a 06 Ram 5.7 and its a little quicker? but it honestly didn't feel much faster then my truck, I'm sure in towing you'd notice onramp acceleration better, but most newer trucks are a lot heavier, this gen F150 is quite light, so your power to weight is quite good. The value to performance ratio on these babies is pretty hard to beat!
Oh wow, I thought the houses looked familiar. I live in Sandstone in NW Calgary 😂 your truck been okay on rust? I'm looking at this model year range as a basic work truck.
Hey there! mine has been ok, I got it already with 260k on it, it had some rust on lower doors, and the box. The box has these places dirt catches, clogs it up, water then rots it out, very common, rear fenders, by the bumper, lots of them. The Crew cab versions I almost always see with no rust around here. BC has some really nice rust free trucks, I"d look on marketplace\kijiji for a rust free truck Vernon\kamloops etc, they're very reliable and extremly cheap parts, you can find a rust free in town, but the stone chips from the highway take their toll (just like all the dodge rams you see for sale). Also consider at rear wheel drive only truck, I've seen them very cheap and in good condition (as they don't get driven in winter often) a nice set of studded snow tires, some weight and you'd be fine almost every day. Best of look in your search!
@@Kingsoupturbo awesome thank you! That's especially good to hear on the 2x4 being a decent option. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I find something workable!
@@andyloucks I'd look for Dodge Rams, Dakota\ Chevy 1500's, as well, look at a bunch of trucks, and the well cared for one will be a real standout. A real older gentleman truck is what you're targeting. the trick is finding something that has been maintained and doesn't need tons of ball joints, brakes tie rods, shocks, etc. Chinese tires are a killer value, there are a bunch of warehouses in the city here stacked with 1000's of them as well. People really use up pickup trucks until there is nothing left, find that one that has something left! let me know how it goes!
My 2003 F150 has 360k and still running strong. It got hit by an 18 wheeler in the front passenger side (the 18 wheeler changed into my lane at 75mph on the highway) and other than the fender and ball joint being replaced everything is amazing.
I've got a 99' F150 4x4 XLT with 4.6, had the truck going on 4yrs now with no problems! an let me tell u, its 1 hell of a truck, with a manual transmission, dat 4th-door. I did every upgrade u can think of to this truck; lift, bigger wheels & tires, Nerf bars, even the motor got a lil upgrade boost, not to mention the truck is oxford white, but jus like any Ford Guy out dar, u maintain ur FORD TRUCK Right and it will last you a long time!!!
You got it! happened to me on this one, I guess over 100,000 miles or so they slowly work their way out, need to retorque on occasion, other then that, reliable truck.
Thank you for taking about the engine, mileage and transmission and not just the the features. I'm looking at an '01 F150 4dr SuperCrew Lariat 4WD for my sons first vehicle and i'm far more concerned with how well it runs with high mileage on it and how easy it is to repair.
Thanks! I will admit the body on frame design of the truck, its a tighter fit for repairs then you'd think, I'd say a Civic\Accord is easier to repair as its easier to get at things (maybe not a v6 Accord ). However parts are cheap, mostly its quite reliable (other then spark plugs ejecting sometimes) service history, something maybe not used for work or farm duty, and you can find a fine truck, reliable for superb money!
I have a 1998 Triton 5.4L these are one of the best gas engines Ford produced. They spit plugs, first job is to torque the plugs to just over 20 lb/ft when you get it home.
My beater 2001 is a 4.6 2wd and it has 293,000 miles on it (that's 471,000 KM) still fires right up and drives great. Burns about half a quart of oil between oil changes but that's it.
I’ve come across a 97 F-150 4.6 It’s going for 3500 with 197k miles. It’s super clean for the time. I had a 2008 F-150 4.6 v8 that got totaled when some kid pulled out in front of me. My truck crushed his corolla but because both airbags deployed it was deemed a loss. Sold it to my brother in law for 3000 then collected 6800 from insurance. I’m most likely gonna pull the trigger on the 97. I’m pretty confident in it
mines an 01 4.2 rear wheel drive bought it for 900 canadian i like it accept an annoying vaccuum leak im trying to track down. so i have to put premium gas in until i fix it so it doesnt ping but its a smooth as ride and its deffinitley enough truck. deffinitley this year ill be taking the bed off and knocking off the rust and undercoating it so i can save it from rotting out
Undercoat is key! Vacuum leaks I looked for too, intake manifold is a good suspect, there are lots of little lines including the notorious one that goes to the back of the manifold its all over the F150 forums, always rots out, easy fix if thats your one! I also had the vacuum line to the A/C controller rot out and leak! best of luck !
He never mentioned if the motor was the 2 valve or 3 valve version. Read some horror stories about the 3 valve, not sure if the 2 valve had the same issues,
Hey there, 2 valve in the pre-03+ trucks, pretty reliable other then the occasional spark plug eject and some small head gasket leaks with high mileage. The 3v motors are their own basket of crazyness, a lot of conflicting information out there and the youtube channels popular with kids bash the 3v pretty bad (for good reason likely) thanks for watching!
i have a 1997 and it's got a floor shifter for 4WD, but it's an automatic transmission. everyone's telling me that that's not supposed to be there, but i got a Chilton book that says different
I saw some very early F150's in the scrapyard that were very different then the later ones, interesting! Found a picture of one! gtcarlot.com/data/Ford/F150/1997/1706254/Interior-77775187.html
I have a 99 2 door F 150 with 236,000 miles. It is a great truck. It has a 4.2 engine. I get 18 in town and 24 on hiway at 55 miles and hour. I love this truck. Doesn't use oil and antifreeze. 5 speed transmission. I will drive it till the wheels fall off.
awesome review my friend..just bought an 02 regular cab 2x4 4.2...rust is cancer;mine isn't bad but here on the east coast the winters are horrible, salt is thick and the damn roads are cowpaths to begin with.. ingredients for less of a paycheck for sure😝cheers from nb
Thanks kindly!! Oh man ontario was like that too, so much salt, brutal, Alberta isn't as bad but still rust finds its way. I"ve had to do a bunch of metal patches on mine and the Hail damage keeps coming back to haunt me, mechanically a nice truck and parts are getting cheaper each year! Thanks for watching!
+MattBraySails Nice!! newer trucks are really nice, no doubt, but value for money on these trucks, for their capability, its a good thing to have, that being said if you drive a truck all day, newer ones are nice, although I read about the 05-08 F150's and man did they have a lot of problems compared to this Gen! Enjoy sir!
+Kingsoupturbo I'm in talks with someone about buying their 2001 F-150 crew cab. It is a 5.4 V8 and only 59,000 miles on it. It is an 8 cylinder and she is a beauty and she runs wonderful to. Any more info you can tell me about the 2001 model? like any problems bound to happen?
Thanks Shane! wow that is super low KM! the 2001 was pretty Similar to the end of the run as I've read, there are few problems with the 2valve 5.4 engines, some eject spark plugs but I haven't had that problem. I don't think there is much else to tell really! they had lots of problems with the next generation F150\F250 but part of the reason this particular Gen is pretty good is the lack of issues! good look on your purchase! great value for money I think!
I just remembered the exhaust manifold problem, after some time the nuts and studs rust out and can snap off on the manifolds and it leaks, I just fixed mine after it had been leaking for 2 years, so much nicer now. I've heard some can leak water on the rear window seal as well, check the Tailgate Key works and the cruise works and the climate control stuff lights up (mine doesn't, clock spring in the wheel apparently causes this)
Recently found a 03 lariat edition with 154,000 miles for 6,999 thinking of getting something as my daily. Clean title and clean interior with only 3 owners. Is it a good deal? Also serviced very well and verified by car fax. No accidents
thats a tough one! for 7000 USD you are looking at a newer truck as well in that range, I'm sure you've looked around but I'd keep my eye open for a 09+ truck at that money, I'd think a super clean 03 should realistically be around 3500$ USD given the age, but depends on where you are and what the market is like! best of luck on your search! (personally I'd look for a 09+ dodge ram, just watch out for the Hemi-tick issues, the 09+ 5.4 F150's are nice too and reliable!)
Kingsoupturbo I’m here currently in San Diego California, and most trucks 03 and up go for 7-14k I’ve looked for decent hemi’s and F-150 but the price doesn’t drop from 12k for 05-10 lol. The 03 looks good, I got the car fax and it was well maintenance and no accidents. Gonna look at it this week. So we’ll if I can negotiate the price. But thank you so much for the feedback and any help would mean a lot!
@@manofGod21 Oh wow!! that is big money and I've heard that California has big money for trucks, up here in Alberta they are a lot less expensive, for the last 4 years as our economy plunged all the used trucks were being sold heading south. They're good trucks, reliable and the parts are Super cheap, good luck checking it out, I bet its negotiable for sure, bang em down in price!!!
My Daily Driver, 1998 XLT 4.6L Supercab 3 door (the drivers side 4th door wasn't added until later years) 2WD. Dead nuts reliable. Does highway cruising excellently and get's killer gas mileage...the shocker...534,000Km on the odometer and climbing. Still looks decent inside and out . Love it!
wow!!! thats awesome mileage!! I didn't know that about the supercab in prevoius years! I saw a very early 97 in the junkyard and it was a lot different then the 02 inside. I bet it gets good mpg with the reduced weight, fantastic!
@@Kingsoupturbo actually the SuperCab was an option even in '97 as the three door as well. Where I work had one, was a'97 Supercab V6 2WD with the 6 and half foot bed. I actually drove that one as a daily for a while until the engine went. I then picked up my '98 with the 4.6 that I drive today from a company based in Surrey BC that used it to go between here and Calgary a lot so it's got a ton of highway Kilometres, my current commute is from Abbotsford to Vancouver BC daily so I keep piling the mileage on her and I've had it as far east as Kenora last summer. Amazingly comfy highway cruiser. I cal it my Crown Vic with a pick up bed!
@@nbrowser That explains the huge mileage! running the coquihalla to calgary is a long trip! lonnnng trip! Good commuter for those highways which are teeming with furious commuters, you can take it easy in the older truck! nice! Mine is a little rough riding in the rear, it likes 500lbs + to smooth it out! Its nice to have an older truck in a sea of leased Mercedes\Audi's I bet, 900$ a month or nothing! thats a win!
i had a 2000 F150 same type of engine the 5.4 ran it for about 260.000 miles...it was a great truck i am looking to get another one similar to it soon!
I had a 2003 Ford f 150 54 for 12 years love it but after time putting money in to it and the body rusty out had to get rid of it I have a 2012 Ford f 150 xlt motor 3.7 and 300 hours power and I love it
Impressive mileage! and a limited slip installed, nice job! I had to do rust repair on my rockers too, seems to rust in the same places on all the trucks!
I love the body style and interiors of these trucks I have a 97 f150 4.2 SPI it’s the xl base model and I love it so far it’s got some rust but i only paid 800 so I’m not complaining
thats a good price! If the rust hasn't penetrated the Metal, I recommend por15 and paint over it, that stuff is magic, really holds the rust down! enjoy the truck!
I just did a whole bunch of rocker work on this truck a month ago or so, its not the funnest job but a bit of sheet metal, some rust converter, a bit of sweat and time and good to go for many years! But sounds like a solid truck other then that, 4.2 is a really nice motor
I have a 99 f 150 super cab that i paid 1,000 for and added a lift kit, nerf bars, hid lights front and back, and mud tires. I get compliments all the time. And i have the 4.6 engine its not fast but its a regular truck you know. I drove a 06 hemi dodge and it had more power but i like fords trucks better. The only thing i don't like is my interior compared to the 04 and up trucks.
very nice! sounds like a deal! speed is relative in older trucks really, 4.6 has lots of juice and tons of torque. The next gen truck was a big step up in interior modernization for sure and ride quality but also cost!
You don't know how much people enjoy a nice straightforward review like this one. All the info people need, nothing more. No nonsense. Excellent job.
Thank you very much! I wish I was a little more cheerful when putting down the info, I thought about what to say a long time! really nice to hear your words! :)
I was thinking the same thing, informational honest and to the point he did really good
My dad bought his 2001 f150 back in 2003, it is a Supercrew cab and I believe it's a 5.4, but since then, that truck has never let us down to this day! Very durable truck from that generation!
One of the best trucks of the generation
@JK LOL….OK….TROLL….
Coming to you from the cold expanse of northern alberta
600,000km working in the frozen wastes of northern Alberta (been up there many times! its ludicrous in the winter) gets my seal of approval!!
No 2004 ford f150 is the biggest peace of shit they ever made 2015 is the best year for the Ford f 150.
My 1999 has over 248,000 miles on it,and still going strong!! I love that old heap!
That is some damn impressive mileage, awesome! I think there was a reason they were selling 800,000 of these a year, a good run of these trucks!
I do end up using it a fair bit in the winter as we get mean winters up here in Alberta, but in a area without much snow I bet you'd hardly need it, a lot less weight and things to go wrong in a 2wd.
you ever have a problem with a spark plug blowing out?I was reading that these trucks blow plugs and then you have issues.
cc ccc that started in 2004
Love this generation F-150!!! As I’m the proud owner of a 2003 SVT Lightning. I get lots of thumbs up, and the truck only has 38,774 miles. Mint condition! 🙂
Wow very nice! that is some super low mileage, the fanciest of all the models of this generation! nice! thanks for watching!
I own a 2002 F-150 with a 4.6 2 wheel drive 8-foot flatbed. As well as a 2003 f150 lifted four-wheel drive short box with a 4.6. absolutely amazing vehicles I have owned for years and don't ever see myself getting rid of either.
"Good for the dogs and sister in laws in the back" I LOVE IT
Toilet Bowl Shawty was laughing at that my self lol.
That’s why I love having a regular cab long bed. Enough space for me and my stuff in the cab and everyone else in the bed.
Just put 5000 miles towing an RV from Florida to south Dakota. No problems. 2000 f150 7700 series. 190k. Good review sir.
I got a 97 single cab 2wd with the 4.2 v6 and the 5 speed stick. it's a lot of fun taking it on a rip through the back roads here in the prairies.
I bet! 5speed must be excellent! Winter fun patrol as well!
My 02 4.6 just rolled 252k today, factory engine/trans running great no issues
Wow that is impressive mileage! Lots you can do with that 600$ a month F150 payment the fancy new truck guys are dealing with! (mmm new trucks so nice!!)

Damon Basaraba you know what kind of weird I just got my first truck its a white 2nd ford F150 single cab short bed really cool truck.
Great review. Just bought one. 03 5.4 in mint condition. I love it. So much.
Nice!! I'm jealous I bet they are totally rust free!
No rust as I dont live where there is snow or salt on the roads .
I have 2000 w 226k miles. Rust bucket but I still like it
I have the 2001 super cab 2WD with automatic transmission and 4.2L V6.
I have the same motor truck nice ride

Excellent presentation! I own a 2002 as well, and you are right those trucks are work horses and they last forever if you maintain them properly!
+zig zag Trucks were built to last back then, now they're built to lease...

Manual transmission for the win!!!
same here, I love my 97 Expe 4x4 with 5.4L triton and E40D heavy duty transmission with 170K on it.
My 02 5.4 had coils go out 1 then 2 then another ugh. Bought a MSD pack and just replaced them all. No issues since.
Same thing happened to me on the other F150, its nearly impossible with a proper scan tool to figure out which individual coil is bad, mine would only go bad after an hour of driving, just replace them all, the cost is minor compared to the time required to diagnose, nice job!
I actually got my 2001 F150 because it had a "blown" engine. Replaced the slark plugs and 8 used coils, what a score.
@@Kingsoupturbo Unbolt all the coils and pull the each coil away from the spark plug one at a time while the engine is running - (you won't get shocked if you only handle the coil.) When the engine DOESN'T bog down, it's either that coil or that spark plug that's the problem.

I have a 2002 crewcab 5.4 with only 103,000 had the truck for 6 years now still like new!
i had a 2000 f150 with the 5.4.... ran till 235,000 miles... amazing trucks
Just purchaced a red 1997 ford f150 xl work truck. 248,000 miles and still cranks and fires drives like a dream
awesome!!!
80yrs old, thats the truck to get!! taken care of, she'll last a long time for you no doubt! score!
Got my dad's old 97' F-150 4x4 with the 4.6. We've had it for 15 years got it used and it is a tank!
Score!!! one of the most reliable and capable years of F150. Tows nearly the same as newer trucks, same payload, good mpg and one other thing, what was it....oh right, ITS PAID FOR! enjoy!
got an 03 F150 Lariat Supercrew and I love it.
The nicest of all the versions of this truck, i wish I had one too!
Sounds like a good reason to get it! maybe studded tires and some bed weight would help in winter?
2003 4.2 L with 110000 miles still going strong
I got a 2000 4.2 with 80k miles
Awesome you answered all my questions
5:59 yes it’s definitely enough Iv pulled a car with my 2.3 ranger and it puts hardly 100 to the wheels
I own one of these trucks with the 2v 5.4 4wd, it has 320k miles, great running trucks.
Just bought and am slowly fixing up a 2001 f150 5.4 triton, crew cab xlt..
Hoping it's a good investment
Low cost of vehicle ownership is always a good investment!
I've got a 99 5.4,4wd. 245k. Runs and drives great!
@@Kingsoupturbo LOL,,,, TRUTH !!!
my 2003 has 240,000 miles on it and still going strong with no sign of stopping.
+Master of The things nice!! huge mileage!
Wht motor in the 03? 5.4 or 4.3??
We own a ''97'' and its been a real good truck for us ... No complaints
Hoping it treats me well after these repairs.
my dad has a 01 King Ranch 4x4 with 184,000 miles. not as much as some of the people in the comments but this generation is seriously underrated
Still a lot of miles! the King Ranch is a pretty nice package inside, there are like 8 different interior configurations these came with!
Jeff Hinkley I 98 Ford F150 no reverse any ideas what's with trans
Bought a 2003 reg cab, 8' long box, V6, 60,000 miles (98 000 km). Bought it for $4000 (CAD) with minimal rust. Excited to get it on the road.
Good review man. I just got a 2001 f150 7700 xl 5.4 2wd for work and its a very good truck.
I bought a 1998 f150 XLT 5.4 v8 in good shape, for only $500, it runs great and the interior is in great shape

I have the 4.2 v6 5spd its been a solid truck.iv done the maintenance and it runs great
My 2003 F150 has 360k and still running strong.

Nice truck!!! I have a 99 f250 light duty 7 lug with 80500 original miles. I love it
Very nice!! such low mileage, thanks for the compliment! I had a F250 7700 myself for a while, its in another video, both trucks were great!
These are the ones that launch spark plugs, the 2 valve motors, the 3 valve motors had 2 piece spark plugs that break
You got it! happened to me on this one, I guess over 100,000 miles or so they slowly work their way out, need to retorque on occasion, other then that, reliable truck.
Dearyvette what did you finally end up getting your son?
What he said⬆️ we need to know
I have a 1998 Triton 5.4L these are one of the best gas engines Ford produced.
That is a helluva lotta of mileage! talk about value for money!
mustanguy102 mine is good on oil
mustanguy102 Damn mine doesn't drink that much oil and it run very great.
The 4.6 is waaaayy more reliable than the 5.4. Other than that, you are entirely right about these!
I think you are thinking of the 3 valve 5.4 which was introduced in 04
I’ve come across a 97 F-150 4.6
It’s going for 3500 with 197k miles.

+Kingsoupturbo Also, loved the video. I tip my hat off to you sir.
I've heard some can leak water on the rear window seal as well, check the Tailgate Key works and the cruise works and the climate control stuff lights up (mine doesn't, clock spring in the wheel apparently causes this)

thats a tough one! for 7000 USD you are looking at a newer truck as well in that range, I'm sure you've looked around but I'd keep my eye open for a 09+ truck at that money, I'd think a super clean 03 should realistically be around 3500$ USD given the age, but depends on where you are and what the market is like! best of luck on your search! Its supposed to be the most reliable of all the motors Ford put in the truck! true of the 04-08 4.6's as well!
Kingsoupturbo yeah unfortunately the rust is pretty bad around the Rockers, and cab clean paint tho
I have the 02 4.6 with 257k put a cold air intake, headers and new muffler. And she is pretty quick.
@@bigjjames9362 Nice!! I noticed a reasonable improvement in throttle response with similar modifications!
I've owned 2 of the 10th gen. Really good trucks for the $$. Great review. Thanks
