- Has your overhead console display stopped working in your 1997 to 2003 F150? You can fix it with a quick solder job. Good luck and let me know how it works out for yourself.
I show you step by step...Cobra Burn Out style!!
THANKS! I fixed my 2001 in about 20 minutes and my soldering skills are crap. Hats off to folks like you who take the time to pass along great info like this in simple and straightforward videos.
Awesome!! I like hearing the success stories!
THIS WORKS!!! Thanks for the video. I had never soldered anything before, but even I was able to fix mine in about 20 minutes. One tip I could share would be don't overheat the ends of the resistors, or they will come right off..... and they are tiny! I was able to re-position it with tweezers, and redo it, and it still worked like a charm.
Excellent!
Thanks soooo much! Went and bought a soldering iron and some rosin core solder at HD. Fixed the console for $25! Wife thinks I'm a hero/great again; she thinks it's her truck! Happy wife, happy life!
And happy. Cuchi cuchi
Probably the best how to video....mine was out for over half a year till I saw this. Works great now!!
Just fixed mine today, had the truck a few years and never noticed it was there until recently installing a stereo with a flash light, looked up and I saw the dark screen behind the tinted plastic. Took it apart to see if it was something obvious but looked good. Jumped on google and found your fix, took a closer look and sure enough those 510 resisters needed soldered. Had everything needed to touch them up and now its back in action. Old plastic was braking so I used the same soldering iron and a zip tie plastic to plastic weld the broken bits that the unit mounts to all back in place. Loved the video, thanks man, stay jazzed up, praise God!
Awesome! I love hearing the success stories
Good $hit bud! And praise God! Amen!!
Son purchased a used 2003 F150 last year, the console didn't work. Today, almost eight years after this video was posted, your instructions worked perfectly! Thank you. All this in spite of mediocre soldering skills! Thx again -
Great to hear! I can barely solder myself but mine is still working to this day after the repair.
Followed the instructions and it worked out great! Easy and inexpensive fix plus the satisfaction of doing it myself.
Awesome! Its good to hear the success stories on this little fix. Thanks
I can’t thank you enough for your Amazing video. I purchased myself a $4.15 soldering iron, rosin, flux, tip cleaning supplies. Merely $26.78 you allowed me to fix my temp/compass console w/zero issues. Works like a champ. Feels great after 4yrs of being w/o. Thanks again 👍🏻
Nice work! I like hearing the success stories on this one.
Fixed the console on my 2000 F150 XLT today using this video as my only information source. The display has been out for over a year but now works perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to develop this video -- very useful and helpful.
Awesome! I like hearing the success stories of people fixing theirs.
This video is awesome! I took mine out and had it back in within 20 minutes. The exact same resistor was loose. Put it back together and I'm my daughter's hero for fixing her truck. Thank you so much!
Great to hear!
So glad I found this video. I had taken my 2003 F150 to Ford and they said nothing could be done. Found your video and fixed it myself. Thank you for taking the time and effort to create this.
Awesome, I like hearing the success stories!
Just fixed my 2001 F150. Took about 20 - 30 min to find my soder kit, and small torx wrench.. then about 10 - 15 min to fix.. It hasnt worked for years.. Thank you so much.
Awesome. Good to hear
after 5 yearsof stareing at this thing and wondering why it doesn’t work i literally just finished fixing it and i dont know how to do little shit like this at all and it looks all ugly how i did it but it works now and im so happy thanks bro
Glad you got it working
worked for my 2001 f150, hadn't seen that display lit up in 7 or 8 years. THANK YOU!!!
Awesome!!
Hey dude. Thanks or posting the vid. I just scored an 2003 in great shape with 190,000kms and had it has some minor issues that need some DIY fixes. This was one of them.....Grabbed gramps soldering Iron and grabbed $6 worth of solder. Fixed within an hour and that was mainly driving to the store. Thanks sir for the quick solid vid
Brett Millar Awesome, I'm glad you were able to fix it. I like hearing the success stories.
Man, thank you so much for this video!!! It WORKS!!!! Took all of 30 minutes and most of that time was letting the iron heat up... Unbelievable!!! Super easy fix thanks to you're video!!! Thanks again and keep up the good work!!!
Awesome! Its good to hear the success stories!
I ran across this video by total accident and decided to go ahead and watch it and fixed my console as soon as the video was over thanks for the info
Awesome! I like hearing the success stories!
Mine has not worked for at least, 5 years in my hunting truck. Works perfect now. You are the MAN! Thank you
Awesome to hear the successful fix!
Just did this in my 2003 F150 Lariat. Took maybe 20 minutes mostly because I suck at soldering. Easy cheap fix for a common problem, thanks for the video!
Had a surface mount resistor with one side off. My flux pen was dry and my rosin bottle all solidified because it’s been awhile since I had to work on a board. Not the prettiest job I’ve done but checked the connection across the resistor at two through holes and read the value. Put it all back together and it works fine. Thanks for the great video. Now I’ll know when I’m going South!
excellent. I'm glad you got yours going again.
Just did it this morning on my 2001 f150 and gal dang if it didn’t work!! That thing has been driving me nuts forever and I happen to stumble across your video!! Thank you for putting that out there!! Hell ya!
Very cool. I'm glad you were able to fix yours!
Well, mine has not been working for years now. Years ago I took it to my local mechanic and they told me that it would be a couple hundred dollars to replace it, so I just let it be broken. I did what you said and I just added solder to the first one furthest to the left and didn't touch any of the others and it seems to have fixed the problem. All of them looked good to begin with, but I just started with that one and popped it back in an it started working. Thank you very much!
Awesome!!! I'm glad you got yours working again.
Thank you for the info. I just fixed mine today. Over 8 years without working.. its alive again
Nice! I love hearing the success stories! Thanks
Thanks for the information! Just fixed my F150 2003 Truck. Worked great!
Awesome!
I fixed it! I'll have to admit though, my first attempt to solder the first 510 resistor was U-G-L-Y. It came off too, completely. I thought it was over at that point but I childishly soldered it back. I only did the first 510 due to my horrible soldering job. Was afraid to touch anything else until I saw if that may have fixed it or killed it entirely. Plugged it back in and it WORKED. Thanks for the video and comments. $14.00 for soldering iron and solder from O'Reilly's Auto Parts and a few minutes - saved me $45 for a replacement.
Good to hear your success!
Used this video to fix mine 2 years ago, worked perfectly, and still works! Cheers.
Very cool! Thanks and Its good to see the success. Mine is still going strong as well!
So glad i found your post....I had the same issue on my 2002 yesterday that i have owned since new living in Tucson, now Phoenix..I fixed per your instructions today..works perfect again.
Glad it helped
2 years without the read out. You are the man!!
Tony LeMaster I'm just trying to spread the word on the pretty easy fix. Thanks for watching
Awesome! Worked with my 2003 E 350 Econoline Chateau(club-wagon) Van after 9 years. Thank you
Very cool to hear the success!
Follow up: Went to the salvage yard and picked up just the circuit board ($5.35). Installed and works just fine. Again thanks for the video!!
fumcpi excellent I'm glad you got it fixed
I bought an 03 and bothers me the temp/compass not working.. found your video and tried the repair another way. I found the 2 510 relays very tiny and tried just rubbing / smearing the existing solder joints with the dull side of the tip of a razor blade thinking it would smear the welds to work. Working 3 weeks now. My solder iron was too big so tried it another way before buying the pen solderer and it works.
Thanks for the video!
Let us know if you get yours fixed up.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout Yes actually edited the comment to include the fix as I tried to fix it another way..just rubbing/smearing the existing soldered joints with a razor blade. Man those joints are tiny.
@@LJC5865 It is some tiny ones for sure.
It worked on my 03 L! Sidenotes:
1.Very hard to get snaps to undo in a cold garage. Push the screwdriver horizontal and wedge/twist.
2. Used solder w flux in core. Tried to just use flux at first but no dice.
3. Check for bugs under the display part. A bug dropped down blocking display digit. Had to redo it. Also a flip down hinge popped out while popping back in.
Thanks for the vid compass been out many years!
Good to hear you fixed it. And thanks for sharing the extra tips!
Amazing! This gage hasn't worked on my 03 in 10 years. I fixed it just like you said. I just used plumbers flux and solder. Thanks TRCB!
Excellent! I like hearing the success stories. Thank you.
I am amateur @ soldering but I finally got the solder to stick where it was supposed to. I only had to fix one of the resistors. the rest of them seemed to be intact... I just went out to check and see & YES it does work. Thank You very much for teaching how to fix this. was very helpful.
Awesome! Its fun to hear the success stories.
This is step by step perfection. Thank you!
yeah boy! exactly what I ranged to know, mine stopped working 2 years ago. I'm going to try this fix tonight, thanks!
Thank you! This fix worked like a charm for my 2001 F150. Sure enough one of the 510 resistors was loose. Soldered that resistor back up and it’s working again. It was a 15 minute fix for something that was broken for many years.
Awesome! I love hearing the success stories! Thanks
Awesome bro, followed your steps, my 510 was out too. Hard a crap to solder but managed! Thanks!
I'm glad you got it fixed!
It's finally working again! Thrilled! Thank you for this video.
Good to hear the success!
I had the same issue with a 02 F150 I bought used. here is another tip after I fixed the exact same resistor doing the exact same thing it read negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius. if yours ever stays stuck on -40f and you press the button and it say -40c look on the front of your AC condenser behind the grill where the hood latch sets right up under there is a Ambient Air Temperature Sensor and mine was missing so I went to a parts store and paid about 20 bucks and plugged in a brand new one and lo and behold the correct temperature appears on the the correct temperature appears on the unit. if you unplug this and there is no temperature sensor plugged in your unit will read negative 40 degrees and the word ice will appear. basically like a clock that has not been set flashing 12:00. if it doesn't pick up that sensor behind your grill that's what the thermometer will do and also some of these F150 and expeditions came with automatic climate control to the AC system and doing some research has shown that if you have the digital automatic climate control this same sensor is used for the air conditioning and heating system to work properly and measure the outside temperature. also the compass may need to be calibrated. to put the compass in calibration mode hold down the big black button and you should see a number come up and VAR and Google a magnetic zone map to find out which zone number your state is in which should be like 1 through 14 in the United States you want to keep pressing the black button to set the zone you're in. and then once you select the correct number for the area you're in wait a few seconds and CAL should show up on the display and make sure your vehicle is in a safe area where you can slowly Drive about 3mph in a complete circle he may need to drive 360 degrees once or twice in a circle about 3mph and eventually CAL should go away and the compass should work correctly. also be careful when removing the unit with the front screw. it can easily break if forgotten and you will have to spend about 70-100 bucks on ebay and most of the time the 510 resistor is loose and just about any of them you will buy but just the console alone will cost a bit. also the mounting of the display holds the door to the sunglass holder in place and if the display is not secured correctly the sunglass compartment door will fall out. just figured I would put that info out there as a lot of these videos are not covering this. even the 1A Auto video just shows how to install the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor but doesn't explain that it has anything to do with this display. I bet there's quite a few people out there with their Ford displaying -40 degrees and some people can't figure out why well this is what happens when that sensor is not connected or potentially getting a good connection. A $20 part that can be picked up at a parts store
Thanks for sharing that tip.
TheRealCobraBurnout what is the purpose of the back part of the console. the one with nothing in it
Old question but its for factory garage door opener / Homelink.
@@TheChaztor Really old answer but it's not for homelink. Homelink is on your visor. That rear part is for a garage door opener if you don't have homelink. You stick it in there and it depresses the button. I use it to store my badge and credentials. I've seen others hollow it out and install multiple random things in there from EQ's to TV screens.
Hey what magnetic zone am I at if I live in GA, USA?
Thanks, man! Already been through the "odometer out" fix on my 04 150 Heritage, so bad solder joints were not a surprise. After watching your excellent tutorial, took longer to heat up the needle iron than to fix the problem. Two big thumbs up!
Jeff Poplin very good to hear tge success story!
Hah!!! Screw you Ford dealership.
Fixed mine. 3 years later and this vid is still fixing trucks.
Thank you.
spyder10 Awesome, I like hearing back when people fix theirs. Thank you
Thanks. I am the worst solder’r and still managed to get it done. Quick and easy!!
Awesome! I'm glad you got it fixed!
this video is the best, just follow directions he shows and use a pointed soldier gun when soldering, had to redo mine but it works now, again excellent video, thanks you saved me bunch of cash, Rob
+Robert Hunsucker So awesome. I like hearing that this fixed helped others
This totally fixed it on my 2002, thanks! One of the chips was loose bouncing around in the box and had to do some glue repairs to re-install, but all good!
glad you got it fixed
This was so easy to take a part and took to my mechanic and he looked at the lifted little square on the motherboard and he applied a few drops of hot solder and fixed it for me without having to purchase a soldering gun. This works perfect. My mechanic was excited that I saved myself $300 on this fix it job. He even told me that he will watch You Tube more often. LOL! Easy to pull apart and put back together. WooHoo!!
Awesome!!
Just got a 2003 F150 recently and used this video to fix the console. great instructions! thanks brother !
Great to hear!!
Take a drink every time he says "this bad boy." Makes for a fun Saturday afternoon!
lol
Genius!! It actually worked I just bought my 2002 ford and the temp didn't work now it does!
Ricky West awesome, it's good to hear the success stories!
Just repaired my 2001. The solder on those resistors was so sparse and brittle that one of the little things popped completely off as soon as I touched it. The original solder was a brownish color as if it had corroded. I used a fiberglass sanding pen to clean off the corrosion, a few dabs from a no-clean flux pen (just like in the video), and some proper leaded solder on both contacts of all five of those resistors. Easy peasy. I've got the same problem with the odometer but I haven't worked up the nerve to take the dash apart yet. 😊
Good to hear you got it fixed. Thanks for sharing the details!
Thanks for the video. Took mine apart this morning and one of the resistors was missing! Heading out to the junk yard to see if I can find another circuit board. Thanks again.
omg i was so skeptical about this working since i dont have the steadiest hands for soldering. but it worked. saved me 100 bucks.
+IFIXUR360 Awesome. Its good to hear
YEA, IT WORKED!!! Mine hasn't worked for over 8 years!! Thanks!!!
Great to hear!
this has been bugging me for years. I would just give it couple hits in the start working thing hitting and abuse wasn't doing anything anymore. thanks dude and I wasn't even looking for this snag. remember you making these videos as if for dummies you got to make sure you include everything. like the front door hinge goes underneath the circuit board mount where the ywo screws go.. but thsnks for the video and you kept me amused.
Now this is how you show a do it yourself video👏👏
thanks
good job....I just fixed mine after watching you.....workin'!
Nice work!
I am really impressed how good your steering wheel looks. looks like new. My 2002 is grungy
It has one of those cheep Walmart covers on it.
Brilliant my man! Thanks for the heads up. Going to try to fix neighbor ladies compass tomorrow.
awesome
This worked great - did not see where the 510 chip was disconnected - but soldered both, it worked - thx much!!
+Allen Bongers I'm really glad this helped and worked for you!
Good to know. My 02’s quit about 6 months ago. Now, the odometer, it’s been off and on the whole time I’ve owned it, so that’ll be another day I feel quite committed to ripping the dash apart.
At least this one was a fairly easy fix.
pretty cool. it really got on my nerves to the point where my wife offered to get it fixed for me.. lmbo.. good video. . 03 f150 here I come...
wow...this was totally legit..worked for a moment..first time...then did a better sauter joint..a second time and works perfectly..thx
Awesome! I like hearing the success stories!
This is awesome! Mine hasn't worked for at least a year. Going to try this very soon.
let me know if it works for you
Odds are it was vibration that caused it rather than cold. Thanks for the fix brother.
Could be
Added to my playlist. Thank you. I need to do this as well. In Arkansas. Over 100 to low 20s temp change. Went out a few years back.
Hey, thanks for the video. The display in my '03 Ranger (a swapped in 2001 Ford Explorer overhead console) quit yesterday. Ranger and Explorer of that generation have the same roofline so its a fairly easy add on from a wreck from the U-pull salvage yard. Did this same fix and works perfect, one of the little 510 resistors was loose. I re soldered both just for good measure. TH-cam to the rescue once again.
Awesome! I like to hear when vids like these help somebody out. Good job fixing yours up.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Mine hasn’t worked for several years and after watching your video, it WORKS! God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽 🍁
Glad it helped! I really love hearing the success stories!
Dude followed your steps I was done in 20min of course my soldering suxs but I be dam it worked! Thanks man
Awesome! I'm a novice at soldering as well but my fix has held up nicely. Thanks for posting up your success story!
All I can say is, Thank you. thank you for your time and wisdom.
Much thanks
I have a 2003 Ford F-150 Supercrew. This solved the problem. Excellent video. Thanks
I'm glad it worked
09/16/15 I thought I'd have to buy a new thermometer/compass display. $200-$300! I just had to buy a T10 screw driver. FIX WORKED GREAT! THANKS!
+Happy Truck Owner AWESOME! I'm glad it worked out for you
It's great to see your feeling good enough to tackle things again, Good job
Thanks. It was really an easy task physically. I will say that it actually took me a lot longer than it seems in the vid. I had to take a few breaks for my back and neck. lol But, its been bugging me for a while that the display quit working. Good to have it fixed.
Thank you for taking the time and making this video.
Just finished mine. Your instructions were perfect.
Awesome. I love hearing the success stories.
Thanks! The solder cracked in the same spot on my mine. 1 minute with a soldering iron and back in business!
Awesome! I love hearing the success stories! thanks
Just did this to my truck, and it worked, thanks for the video brother.
worked perfectly. I had 1 that fell completely off and was laying loose. Thanks for sharing
Awesome. Good to hear the success! thanks
Sooo that's how the overhead thing comes off 😮😅.
I haven't done the whole job, but I know it'll work so, thanks for this video good sir.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you! I just soldered up both of the 510 resistors even though they looked good. Shazam! It worked. Dealer wanted $200 just to look at it. Long live my 2003 F150. Wyoming is great! Check out the Cody Museum of the West in Cody, Irma Hotel, Cody Dam.
Awesome
Just followed this video-works like a charm!
awesome! Good to hear
LOL, random video that just popped up. I actually have 2002 F150 and this is not working on my truck as well. Will fix it today. Scary part is how did my phone know this was broken and recommended this video to me.
Internet algorithms tracking our every move! But I do hope you get yours working with this fix. Mine has been good ever since!
Thanks, i did fix my overhead console like a charm. The way you explain how to is precise.
Excellent. I like hearing the success stories. Thank you.
Great video! my '02 Supercrew's Compass and temp read out just went out on me too. I had heard it was a common problem on the 10th gen F150s. This is my upcoming weekend project. Bugs the shit out of me when little things stop working. Thanks again for the detailed video.
+MrEsharp79 Super easy and kinda fun/satisfying fix. Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.
hey thank you for the video, my 2 contacts had came off and were laying in the console. I held them with tweezers and soldered 1 side at a time. put it back together and works like new. thanks great video
Awesome!! Its good to hear that the fix is working for others.
