    Great video 😀. Nice to see someone else who collects physical media like I do. I have about 1,596 blu-rays in my collection and I keep running out of room for them. Your video was perfect for giving me an idea on making my own shelves on a tight budget. LONG LIVE PHYSICAL MEDIA!!!!!

    Nice video! You can put a few flat boards which reach to the wall on top of each narrow board to increase the looks of the shelf. The will also be a little reduction in the amount of dust that accumulates now that it is fully open behind the narrow boards.

  • @EastCoastCouture
    @EastCoastCouture 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    To really make the shelving system look better, you should should try applying a dark wood stain followed by a clear coat polymer product of some sort. Having that is really going to prolong the life of the self as you take movies in and out over the years.

    • @JeffRauseo
      @JeffRauseo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nick Zumbrun totally agree, but this is just a temporary solution. I won’t be in this house long enough for me to want to make all that effort. When I take this plan with me to a new house with more space, I will 100% stain and polymer them

    It's hard to find shelves that are specifically sized for Blu-ray which would be another advantage of making your own. You can always buy a DVD shelf but I don't need the extra height since I don't collect DVD. Nice tutorial.

    for me in the beginning it looked cool to display them i actually printed my own spines and put them in the dvd case so they all looked the same , but then it kinda looked cluttered so i put them all in a sleeve case that holds like 1000 + and put the covers in a box outta the way and printed a book to where each disc was.

    I find it a bit easier to use steel brackets you mount to the studs, and you add in 6 inch wide boards for the shelves. for less than thirty bucks, I was able to put up a full wall shelf that held well over a thousand BDs.

    Nice video. It's good to see people solving a problem with their brains rather than tossing lots of money at it. Personally, I would have used two horizontal pieces, one in front, the other against the wall. I would nail or screw the one against the wall into studs, which would be much more sturdy than toggle bolts in sheetrock. I would then place a 1×6 (which is actually 5.5 inches wide, about perfect for Bluray or CD) on the top of the cross pieces as my shelf. The 1×6 shelves would make it more expensive, but worth it to me. Lastly, I would paint or stain everything before I installed it. But that's all Monday morning quarterbacking. Good job, though, and good video!

  • @RenePeraza
    @RenePeraza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've started consolidating my Blurays into collections, sequels, etc. to maximize my shelving space. 2-movie sequels go into 2 disc slim, clear DVD case. They're extra slim, and I can show-off my slipped-in custom graphics. Similarly, multi-film sequels (or or more) go into multi-disc cases. So, Godfather saga all in one case, Mission Impossible all in one, etc.

    • @Fivehe
      @Fivehe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you throw out the original cases then?

  • @totempolejoe1
    @totempolejoe1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made a shelf like this, but I had to make some modifications. First, I collect VHS tapes, too, so I needed the spacing between the shelves to be enough to accommodate my bigger clamshells. Second, my room is in the basement, and the wall where the shelf is is cinder block, so rather than mount the 2x4s to the wall, I just got some extra 1x2s and put them in the back between the shelves. I used the cheapest, fugliest wood at the hardware store, so they aren't pretty, but they are definitely functional.

  • @thatguyontheright1
    @thatguyontheright1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You should at least put some protective coating on. Wipe on oil based polyurethane will retain the wood look, but it'll also protect the wood too.
    Also all walls have studs. The drywall has to attach to something. Building code is 16 inches apart.

    • @edwardcurtis597
      @edwardcurtis597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I to prefer 16" on center studs, but I have lived in areas where 24" on center is allowed. Check for sure before making any holes in the walls.

    Instead of bracketing the 2” x 4”’s all the way up, a single bracket at the top of each stud would be more than enough to prevent a tip-over. It would save a bunch of time too. Regardless, it looks great!

    Now, put on a flat top shelf, with a half inch front lip.
    Paint it black to match the picture frames above it.
    Then, run LED rope lights under the front lip of the top shelf.

    When we moved to a new place my wife moved a couple weeks before I did and scattered my discs all over in baskets and drawers. She didn’t like the look of the shelves we had. After we failed to find a good shelf at a price we could manage I built a free standing shelf that fits behind our sofa from scrap wood and stain the previous resident had left behind.

    shelves? NO thank you! shelves take a lot space, and movies are exposed to dust, mold, humidity, etc. that can damage your collection. Get acid free cardboard boxes with silica gel inside to avoid mold and damage on discs, for one reason comic collectors use boxes, yeah yeah! you can't see all the time your movies in the shelves, boxes are boring but! condition matters!!! shelves killing collections, same for records, games, anything, avoid exposed collectable items. Suggested Boxes: www.bagsunlimited.com/product/4127/dvd-storage-box-corrugated-cardboard
