    Seeing some comments about me advocating “scalping”. Scalping would be going to Best Buy and buying all of their Steelbook stock on day one and then selling for 20 times the cost.
    What I am saying is, that if you have a movie that has a market value that is very high, you may want to consider selling it to fund other aspects of your collection. If you can get $50 for a single Blu-ray from someone and you’re okay with selling, then sell it to that person who wants it that badly and buy more movies with your $50.
    It’s not like I have 50 copies of Dead Alive sitting around that I’m selling for $100 each. I had one copy, and sold it for a fair price considering the market value, and now I’ve lost that movie from my collection so I can buy others.
    Collectors should always be looking to find ways to offset their costs and grow their collection without breaking the bank. This is one way to do it. In no way should you go to Best Buy and buy all their limited editions to resell. That is terrible and I’m not advocating for that.

      You are correct. You didn't say that. But I look at it this way: even if you had, what you do with your money and your movies is YOUR CHOICE! Too many internet trolls basically get cranky and wine about everything today! Even if you had multiple copies. You spend that money and paid for it yourself with hard work! People have been buying and selling trading cards for a century plus and no one complains! Or how about books! Or old desirable records! The trolls need to get themselves a hobby! 💯

      Andy Little so you have never bought something and resold it for a profit. Either as a collector. Or because you got a good deal? I highly doubt that. I don’t want to turn the comment section ugly on a video that isn’t mine. But Jeff, me or frankly, even you have the right to purchase and sell an item at a profit, loss, break it, smash it, do whatever we want with it. It is truly that simple.

      Films At Home “Scalping” ? Lmao......hello....mic fucking fly .....it’s just good ol Capitalism he was talking about. Free enterprise! Nobody has to buy his movies, nobody has to sell them to him, stores don’t have to stock them, etc etc.
      Scalping...if one goes to Best Buy and or goes online and buys up all the 4K Zardov, then sells them at 7 times the cost...THATS scalping! And that’s BS! Like the mother fuckers in Seattle in 99’ buying up all the Metallica seats, then sells for double....BS
      TARGET store- just sold their online exclusive- GI JOE CLASSIFIED toys, transformers SS #68, and a couple Star Wars black series- all sold out in first 7 seconds! Huh?! It takes longer then that for the screen to load on app/website, push icons over to Cart sms checkout; even if u have everything ready to go! They use Bot software . They detect the second the store SKU goes up then it does its micro magic processing, goes to dozens of pre paid gift cards for quicker checkout, and they can route addresses back to the scalpers one address- so they can skate past the “ two only “ rules. THIS is scalping!
      I’m tired of getting “scalped”. ( I can use the native term , cuz I’m native Siberian....tho they didn’t have scalping in our culture. But w/e, we did fight the fn commies during and after the Russian revolution, long after the Tsar’s white army was destroyed. Most reds couldn’t last fighting in Siberia, even tho outnumbered... but then the reds that fought westward finally returned east and waited till summer to flush out the Yakut). I digress....lol. Drunk, not sorry.
      I really like your channel, I just subbed… I have thousands of movies ranging from never before released VHS that never even made it straight to video that we’re just not for sale copies they went to video stores and producers and movie companies I never saw the light of day laser disk the entire HD DVD collection Blu-ray and now 4K… Although most of my numbers are in regular DVD, and a bunch of those send case two for a dollar dollar store DVDs old kung fu flicks in black-and-white and silent movies.
      It seems you are a treasure trove of movie info though, which is very interesting profitable and fun. Kudos ....look forward to live streams and Q&A. Throw some superchat ur way.

      Scalpers are not the scum you imply they are. Whoever buys from them only did so because they weren't able or determined to snag it in time at initial release. Nothing wrong with people who made the effort to get the product to make a profit off of it.

      But lets keep this convo going. How do you feel about this? I find people letting stuff go on offer up all the time that they have no idea are rare or oop. They're usually casual movie buyers and not in the know on what's hard to find. So what do you think about preying on those oblivious folks? I personally bought a stack of 10 mostly horror blurays from a guy for $30 and within the 10 movies he had the 10 disc non deluxe bluray set of the Halloween films. Opened but still perfect condition. So i effectively paid $3 for it and since i already owned the deluxe, i sold it to some guy for $100.

      As time goes by, the amount of physical copies out there will reduce. This wouldn’t be a big deal if we weren’t approaching a world where the retail landscape is leaving the physical media business. It seems unbelievable, but one day you won’t be able to buy anything in physical form, other than food, furniture, clothes, etc. Hell, even with furniture, they’ll come a day when you buy basic white chairs, put on a VR visor and buy a skin for that chair to see in the VR world. I don’t like it, but I also didn’t like Redbox, but that didn’t stop everyone from destroying Blockbuster by using Redbox. It’s the normies that are destroying the world, the people that don’t know they’re killing the very things they love by embracing these new technologies. Personally, I hate VR, but it will take over the world in twenty years.

    Learned all of this through record collecting. "Collect what you want" is the best advice you can give. Spending a bunch of money on crap you don't actually want just because it's out of print or whatever is the path to a house full of crap nobody wants and infinite disappointment. I only made this mistake a few times while building my movie collection over the past year.
    This is the golden age of movie collecting. VHS, DVD, blu-ray, hell even Laserdisc is still a strong collector hobby. Every movie you want WILL be reissued. Keep your bargain bin DVD release of Dawn of the Dead, it's a fun movie that transcends the limits of media format. Eventually it'll be released on blu-ray and you'll get it for $17.

    • @actualnotanewbie

      Interesting. I'm building a combined physical and digital collection for my PLEX server, and I'm considering getting out of print, limited For Your Consideration discs even for things I already own on digital like seasons 1 and 2 of Atlanta. This is mostly because I love the art.
      But I agree you shouldn't but something you won't want. Apple TV+ for example made a bunch of FYC discs but I'll only consider getting the disc for The Tragedy Of Macbeth because I actually want to see it.

      You’re reaching your conclusion too soon. Give it ten more years and your house may be a gold mine. By 2030 there will be people willing to pay thousands for a damn DVD copy of Gigli. Think about how much Nintendo cartridges are worth now, even the shitty games.

    I can appreciate these thoughts. But I am somewhat (I know essentially it IS about the movie) surprised you never touched on special features to these releases. If you really like a particular film you most likely would be interested in the extra features as well. If these “extras” are exclusive to such a release, yeah people WILL pay more for them. When I go to purchase any OOP film that I really love I always take a look at the bonus features. Audio commentaries are a big one for me.

    • @meyou5350
      @meyou5350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agreed. Also sometime rereleases come with new transfers, and there is always the chance that the transfer is worse off than before. Criterion’s are usually essential to keep even if there is a rerelease because they often change features or the inserts.

    • @venompower64
      @venompower64 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@meyou5350 Exactly. The people who want the Criterion want it for a specific reason, not just for the title. A lot of limited runs (Arrow & Shout) have extra versions of the film. These additional versions are limited by rights and have a set number that can be sold. You're typically not going to find those cuts on a future release.
      So yes, as you both say, it's what the release has to offer, not just the title itself. Some MAY come back in print with everything from before, but that's not super common. I see that happen mostly with Shout releases. Although, I hear the Vincent Price set will have some stuff removed. I cannot confirm though.
      If you only care about watching the movie, then sure, listen to this guy.

  • @glyph2011
    @glyph2011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The thing with Criterion titles is that they do, frequently go OOP as the rights lapse. The Criterion supplemental features are unique to those titles and the restoration work done is so good and most of the time better than the normal Blu Ray releases. They also have director involvement most of the time. So. My point is , the Criterion OOP titles do sell for high prices. But they are justified.

    • @thimble288
      @thimble288 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is it just me or is Criterion sort of lazy about advertising the titles they have rights to? At some point you realize that every Criterion title is in the very least worth your time, and I think they've kind of taken this for granted.
      If I was a filmmaker, I would be stoked to see one of my films put out by Criterion, but now I also see their marketing as a sort of hindrance to certain films finding their audience and market

    I'll never sell my OOP movies, because they mean more to me than just money. Sure, someone else might release it again, and if I like that movie enough, I'll buy it again. I mean, I've got 12 different versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 8 versions of The Thing and 9 versions of Alien. I collect movies based on the unique packaging, extras, etc... Not just the movie.

      Yeah if i cared about just having the movie i would probably go mostly digital. Agree, I've got multiple special editions of single titles or boxed sets for things I'm interested in as I like the packaging as well as the contents... Probably doesn't apply to everything but for example with the Star Wars films I own multiple editions of these on every format since the VHS days right up to the recent Skywalker saga 4k box set! Dawn of the dead I have several sets of as well and don't plan to sell any. I have pre-ordered the new Halloween set but I like the tin and don't plan to sell it and will leave it in my archive. As Jeff said though, each to their own. The saving money thing makes sense for most people in many cases but some people are happy to wear the fact they have multiple copies and aren't fussed about (or fortunate enough financially) selling them and making the extra money. Plus for some of these things it was an adventure to track down and I want to keep that item and the memory of chasing it down. All part of the fun!

    The only way I think spending over the odds hurts is if you're buying to sell down the road and a re-release destroys your investment - however, if you're spending an inflated amount on a rare release that you're going to cherish then it makes no difference about resale value or re-release

      Supply and demand is basic economics. It doesn't change because of emotions or morals. If everyone decided not to sell at higher prices, all that rare stuff would be bought up in a second and there'd be NO option to buy it. At least selling at higher prices allows them to be available. If you want it bad enough then it might be worth the money to you and someone is probably willing to part with it for that money, otherwise he'd just keep it.

      It's not even limited to include things like color timings. I can see in the future movies having certain parts censored depending on what's acceptable for the period. Toy story 2 is an example of this. The outtake scene in the end credits with stinky Pete is no longer in the any of the Blu ray, 4k Blu ray re-releases or streaming platforms. I remember back when Titanic had home release on VHS parents had the scene with Jack and Rose in the car manually removed as they thought it was inappropriate for children. Can't remember if it's OOP but Gone with the wind was removed from streaming platforms so I doubt that will get a re-release. Who knows what else will happen to other films.

    I think we need to distinguish between standard releases of a title and special editions. If an unremarkable edition of a film happens to go out out of print for whatever reason, then fine, why bother over-paying, just wait for it to get re-released. But that isn't the same as a special edition with deluxe packaging and/or a unique set of extras. If something like that goes out of print then it is worth a lot more to collectors, and rightly so, and it's more likely to hold its value too. Even if such a title is later re-released, not all the special features are always ported over, and rights issues mean they sometimes can't be, or the company that made them has gone out of business. It's the difference between wanting to own a title and wanting to collect a particular edition, I suppose, and the latter is what most collectors are interested in.

    There is one major caveat to your argument here. And that is BONUS MATERIAL. For a man who loves his Arrow and Scream factory, you should know that these houses often pay to ah e their own extra material made.. commentaries, interviews and even documentaries are often funded in house, not by the major studios. So when these titles go out of print, there is no guarantee that the same party will release it again. It may be some other company’s turn or the main studio that release the film again. (Often arroyo w and Scream release the same films, but at different e times, and often they have their own set of extras). Arrow at one point also could not afford to buy outright the exisiting extras for some movies they released.
    So the problem here is that you end up with people double, triple and so on dipping into the well to get hold of all the material they can beyond the film itself. And that’s why they may pay the extra for it.. not because they don’t think the film will released again.
    I agree people should be careful, but if they want those special features, they may want or have to pay extra if they miss it upon release

    Some of these things just never get re-printed.... Like when I bought my gamera Blu Ray set that it went out of print and now they are doing another one but with 4k transfers.....
    So honestly? It's really a guessing game sometimes.... If your lucky you will end up with a few out of print titles.
    Things to lookout for.....
    Out of print 4k steelbooks, most of them never gets a reprint so once they are gone? They are GONE forever. Heck most steelbooks never get re-printed, the movies might but the steelbooks won't.
    Some limited edition sets if they are only printing like a really small quantity of it? Chances are it's not going to get a reprint once it's sold out....
    Same goes for the collectors edtions, most of those are a one and done kind of thing because they are expensive to make in the first place.
    Out of print horror movies usually also never get re-printed, that's more reserved for more mainstream titles. If it's a popular movie the chances are it's going to get like 3-5 other editions through the years.
    The fanbase, does the movie/series have a cult following behind it? If not nobody is going to be going out of their way to collect something worthless.
    Has it been re-printed before? Disney does a lot of reprinting on their animated classics from DVD to Blu Ray to 4k... Etc...
    Sometimes as I said you can't anticipate it, like who knew Friday the 13th was ever going to get a new reprint set for all the movies?
    And lastly try not to end up like with 5 copy's of the same movie/series....

    • @LiMe251

      Or if it's a niche interest in the west, like everything I try to get, there'll be one printing, most likely on Blu-ray or SD Blu-ray, and when that runs out it never gets released or reprinted again.

      @Dragonk116 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LiMe251 That's true most of those SD-Blu-Ray formats usually only get released once and never really reprinted later on because that specific format is supposed to be for like more meh titles that don't really get like the nice new HD transfers to make it to full Blu-Ray quality, and as a result they are usually just a one time thing.

It is the same with comic book editions where the prices at 50 pounds and then they are at OOP at it goes to 300 quid, give a year and it will be probably re-released at the previous 50 quid. This really goes to show me how aftermarket pricing of physical media varies wildly depending on the medium.
    With music CDs, original prints tend to be the most sought after and retain value even when reissues come out but other variants (whether from a different country, if they're remasters, if they're remixes, if they're limited quantity, if they have bonus tracks, if they come in deluxe packaging, etc) can have variables that makes them sought after in their own right-sometimes even more so than original presses.
    With video games, prices for certain titles can vary wildly by platform and said titles getting some form of rerelease may actually drive up the price of the game if anything since a rerelease may change the experience of the game in many ways (especially if said game was released on a poor selling system like the Sega Saturn or a boutique system like the Neo Geo AES). On top of that, we're living in a time where retro gaming is very popular and those games tend to be expensive by in large. This isn't even getting into the fact that variants and collector's editions also play a huge role in video game pricing.
    Man, so many factors to think about.
